Well, I haven't read about the contest, but I will end up looking into it now. But as far as writing goes, graphic material is meant as in bloody/gorey scenes for the most part, as well as sex scenes, etc. Sure it is fine to have blood in there and such, but just don't go over the top with it.

Antaric's got it right. Pictures like this one should be perfectly fine by the rules. Even though it's a battle scene, which implies violence, it is not something that will need to be rated 16+.

Similarly, drawing a marine right after he's blow a hydralisk's head, or Lord Diablo feasting on the remains on the last adventurer who tried to kill him, would probably be pretty inappropriate.

Rule of thumb, avoid blood, organs and eroticism.

Argent, I'm going to have to disagree with you on the blood part. Excessive gore is definately innapropriate, but there's nothing like a shallow sword slash across the chest to emphasize on how intense the battle is.
