Switching to prot from ret?

ok so i have a lvl 72 ret pally and i was considering switching to prot and need some advice like actually how to switch, what gear to pick up and stuff like that. this is my first char, and need some good advice would like to have a well rounded pally to do al pvp-pve and instances please help.

My paladin was ret from 60 to 80 (hit 70 a week before WLK, and 80 a month ago) and just last week switched to Prot.
I contracted a guildmate to smith up a full set of Tempered Saronite, the Daunting pair, a Tempered Titansteel helm, and combined with the +def gear I selected while questing through all the zones, I hit 544 defense with just a single enchant. (I know it's "too much" but it leaves me room to upgrade through heroics.)

really apreciate all the help guys, thank you very much... will help tremedously, i know most of my Q's are prolly already answered in the stickies, but i have three children and not much time let alone to play, as to look through them all... Really apreciate the help. What about talents any good ideas for a tree for either ret or prot. still debating on which one to keep. but i know for sure when duel spec comes it will be ret/prot or prot/ret... THANK YOU OH SO VERY MUCH!

Woot, I was in the EXACT same situation as you. Here is what I did...
Go do about 10 or 20 quests, make sure you grab as much prot gear as possible (a quest shield will be a major asset if you can get one). Next you are going to have to go to an AH and buy gear, cobalt gear to be accurate. It's the best tanking gear you will be able to afford for now. Also try your best to get a semi-respectable tanking wep. After that it is just a matter of the respec and equiping the gear.
