I highly recommend you look through the link posted below as it is very informative, even for countries other than the USA.
Occupational Outlook Handbook
- Department of Labor website
For animal care workers and service, click
here
to view the occupation(s) directly. With this handbook, one can view detailed descriptions, salaries, educational requirements, career paths, and job outlook or histories as maintained by the DOL. There are many other statistics available as well.
Here's an example:
Animal lovers get satisfaction in this occupation, but the work can be unpleasant, physically and emotionally demanding, and sometimes dangerous.
Most workers are trained on the job, but employers generally prefer to hire people who have experience with animals; some jobs require a bachelor’s degree in biology, animal science, or a related field.
Most positions will present good employment opportunities; however, keen competition is expected for jobs as zookeepers and marine mammal trainers.
Earnings are relatively low.

Which is not so different than large piles of domesticated poo...doesn't take a 4-year to do that. I myself tried to get on with Animal Control at my local county, but the guy in charge already had someone picked out. That's how it goes in small towns, though.

I'd do the job for the opportunity to work with the animals, not specifically for the money.

Never pick a job for the money... there's more important things.
You necroed this lame zookeeper thread to say this?
Never is a pretty strong word. If say... I could do an awesome job for $4 an hour, or I could do a slightly less awesome job for $7000 an hour, I think I would pick the job based on the money.

a large portion of which can usually be achieved with a lot of cash
Well, want an unhappy job with a fat paycheck, or a job you love with a mediocore paycheck? Do you want to be happy with just enough money, or depressed with too much money?
I know what I'd wanna be...

You're confusing "unhappy with money" with "happy with money". That's not what I said. :P
You have a job you absolutely hate. You detest it. You're away from work as often as possible without getting problems. The people there are absolute pricks and you hate every single one of them. But you make alot of money. But due to the situation at work, you're a prick in real life too. Most people stay away from you, because, frankly, you suck.
or
You have a job you absolutely love. You cherish it. You're gladly working overtime to help out your colleagues. And they're fantastic, did I mention that? The pay isn't that good, but it's enough to keep the ship floating. And since you're happy at work, you're happy at home. Since you're happy at home, you have more friends. Friends who can lend you money if ^&*! hits the fan. Friends who don't inviting you over for a party or two. Because they know you're a good guy.
is that better explained? :P

I used to have this idealistic "money doesn't matter" mentality. Then I got kids, and they have to eat... it would be nice to send them to college....
Seriously, put on another 10 years of age and you'll get the idea.

I wouldn't want to work at a zoo because of the large crowds of constantly moving kids... lots of disease. The animals would be nice.
