All of those posts aren't very accurate. Some mages aim for crit based dps (it rocks)
I have about 830 fire damage and about 38 chance to crit also I have blessings deck another added 80 spelldmg while in combat and Im raiding ssc/the eye. For karazhan hey.... Just don't be frost spec and you should be fine I did it in greens :)

why not being frost spec? at the beginning of tbc, our healers were a bit undergeared to keep up with the garotte damage of moroes. Iceblock saved my ass more then once there. frost isnt crap dps in raids, it just isn't optimal dps :)

800's high, you'll need the crafted gear to hit 800 pre-Kara.
Arcane's a lot of fun but you'll need higher level gear to make it work and as Aswen said, a shadow priest. You definitely want a Lightning Capacitator and/or MSD for it to work as a spec.
If you have ~+5-600 gear and want to maximize your DPS, I'd recommend going 41 points into arcane and the rest in fire and use fireball as your main nuke. The Mind Mastery talent will boost your +dmg by around 125. MM > Firepower until you get around +8-900 dmg, then firepower's multiplier will exceed it. Take improved scorch as well, it's a great way to boost your DPS.
If you want more survivability, go frost.

I have 903 currently unbuffed. With arcane/fire, it's great. Go with a full frost build if you're lower than 800 spell damage.

With iceblock now a baseline ability, other mages can use that too.
it's not (yet).
from a pure PvE standpoint 40/18/3 will be your best dps until you reach 800 damage / 250 crit rating. then 10/48/3 will be the best dps from that point on.
being frost probably wont hurt you either, especially if you have less than 7k hp.

Old post didn't see the reply but of course I know this 38 percent chance to crit from gear alone and crit/dmg gems in all your gear while being hit capped for fire is fine. Although I have no graduated to arcane and moving through hyjal/bt smoothly top of the meters thanks for the advice.

Frost is bad for low spelldmg... once you have over 1200 you go Arcane/Frost... in no other way is frost good at all. and the way I have mentioned is with a full frost mage stacking winters chill that it is viable.. It's a pure raid spec. Frost is for pvp not raid dps.

As long as you have >750spell dmg, you do ok in Kara.
I am full frost with +845 spell dmg and I am always in the top 3
on the damage meters in Kara. Last night I was #2.
Of course it helps if you are hit capped.
