Most emblem gear has identical pieces that drop in the 10-person versions of Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, or Eye of Eternity. If you likely won't be raiding most of those places then the best thing to do would be to take a look at the emblem gear and buy the piece that is the biggest upgrade for you.

Make yourself a gear wishlist and take note of where the items drop and how likely you are to fight those bosses and the droprate % of said items. If it appears most likely that some emblem gear will be easier for you to acquire and more worth your time and emblems.

For example, I bought Egg of Mortal Essence with my first 40 badges and I ended up just leaving it in the bank because I got new trinkets the next day which proved better. So essentially I wasted 40 emblems.

To answer your original question: yes, Emblem of Heroism gear is worth getting, simply because most of it is identical to the stuff that drops in raids. It just becomes available faster because you're more likely to be running heroics and have a bunch of emblems saved up before you even set foot in Naxxramas. You may also find that you will get more mileage out of your emblems by purchasing heirloom gear for your alts.

It may also be worth mentioning that we can't really help you too much unless we see your current gear, talent spec, or know whether you're only in entry-level heroics or if you're in a guild which raids on a regular basis.

The Protective Barricade of Light is a great shield, but there is a minor upgrade for it off of Maexna, at the end of the spider wing, which makes the barricade not the greatest purchase. I bought it and used it for a while, but ultimately it's rotting in the bank. I don't regret the purchase since I was swimming in emblems at the time, but it's just not a strong recommendation.

Sartharion is the easiest raid boss and it's really up to your raid roster whether spending the emblems for the gloves is worth it. If you have a lot of hunters, shaman and warriors in your raid then it might be worth purchasing. Same goes with the chest - while it's harder to get than the gloves it's also twice as expensive.

I wouldn't advocate you spending emblems on gear at the beginning of your naxx "career" unless your guild is really having trouble busting in. If you're guild is starting to attempt the frostwing lair section and you're seriously short on gear at that point and have emblems to spend, then yeah, buff up.

As well, it's nice to have emblems sitting around in case you ever want to sub in as enhance or something - quickly gearing up with emblem loot will make the whole process less embarrassing. Trust me, those quest greens that have been gathering dust in the bank aren't nearly as awesome as you remember.

The amulet is the one solid purchase though, as well as the totems - you wont upgrade that necklace until you get to malygos.
