ya know, after checking out the quests on the pandaren starting zone, I REALLY like Ji Firepaw's personality :P he's a funny guy, with a pro-active mind-set, and a care-free attitude. If this was a martial arts movie, he'd be played by Jackie Chan.
His polar oposite is Aysa Cloudsinger, who's all serious, business, meditation, and contemplation. If this was a movie she'd be played by Jet Lee. (or.......... a female version of him I guess)
They really digged and grasped the concept of Yin&Yang, with these 2, since they are polar opposites, that balance each other perfectly. Its a shame the circumstances force them to become rivals.

Told ya heh; like I said on the previous page, Yin and Yang are a fairly basic concept: Also funnier that the happier-go-lucky is represented by Yang which is the White part of the symbol(Horde), while the cold calculating type is the Black part(which is what the Alliance get's).

I also found out why were the alliance and horde on the wandering island. Wanna know why?
Turns out, that the skyfire, the gunship that takes the combined alliance and horde forces to battle deathwing, RIGHT AFTER dropping everyone onto deathwing's back, decides to............ take all the horde forces on the ship as prisoners and transport them to stormwind................
Yeah they went all like "Ohhhh Thrall and the aspects are gone, lets round up all these horde soldiers and put them in cages"
¬.¬
While the original captain of the ship (and his horde counterpart who was leading the horde forces) died while jumping onto deathwing's back, and so an overzealous second in command for the alliance forces Delora Lionheart decides to capture and imprison all the horde soldiers aboard the ship, but karma is a b1tch, and the skyfire ends up caught in a freakish storm generated by deathwing going coconuts on the maelstrom. This storm severely screws up the navigation systems of the ship, and it ends up crashing on the wandering island.
Yeah :S as a pandaren, you end up finding a tauren who was held captive by the alliance forces, and you need to help him free the rest of his troops.
So much for honor right?
it still doesn't make much sense why must the pandarens join a side though. During the entire quest both Aysa and Ji remain good friends despite of (or maybe BECAUSE OF) their differences, and after they take care of the wrecks of the skyfire (Which is badly hurting the wandering island, which is a turtle) the alliance and horde soldiers
are at each other's throats
You go back to the main temple to seek the wisdom of one of the elders, and turns out,
the representative of the alliance (Delora) and the representative of the Horde (Korga)
(Alliance rep and Aysa to the left Horde rep and Ji to the rigth) have told this wise elder "an important truth" he goes on to say that not only the turtle needed healing but that the rest of the world does too, and as such, you must leave the island to do it, and for no apparent reason, Aysa is willing to go with Delora, while Ji is willing to go with Korga.
An interesting fact is that after leaving the wandering island, you are sent to stormwind/Orgrimmar, and you must DUEL varian/garrosh AND WIN.
Ohh yeah, =D I get to smack down my 2 most hated characters in the whole game, AND KICK THEIR ASSES
Their starting zone is already made of win on my books.
Edit:
Here's the quest where you duel varian
http://www.wowpedia.org/Quest:Fight_With_Varian
All the dialog is just placeholder (a very VERY funny placeholder :P) but the fact remains that you gotta duel him and win =D
The horde version is not yet added in wowpedia, or wowhead though =/

It makes sense from a gameplay reason: Having a third faction would be a pain in the ass to equalize. Lore wise; it makes sense that to have high ranking members as the actual ambassadors to the new world, since they want to make sure they'll get the best deals/set ups they can from the factions.
As for why: probably because the two Pandarens see their own view points existing in the chosen faction heh.

undoubtedly, there will never be a third faction in this game. as such they really had to join one side, but they could had chosen a better excuse for them to to so.
Then again, this is all incomplete info, there's at least 3 cutscenes on that starting zone, and none of them are implemented, maybe something happens in there that isn't reflected on the quest text and that explains better why the division.
So far I was only able to read the quest text and nothing more. Heck the quest where you duel varian only has placeholder text, I mean this is what the quest says:
Description
:
Let's rock.
Speak with Varian:
(Dialog with Varian) I'm the king.
(your option in the dialog) Let's fight!
Completion
You're cool. Welcome to the Alliance, <name>.

ohh BTW, I'm back to wow now =D a friend sent me a Scroll of ressurection (I didn't even knew I was viable for one, I mean, I've only been inactive for a month) and I'm using that time to farm up the gold and buy me another gamecard.
so ye >=) the most badass DK of duskwood is back to active duty.

yep, same as garrosh.
(Though I don't really know if we actually win "legit" or if they're just "going easy on us")
the quest isn't really clear at this moment since they don't even have a quest-text, and the quest consists of you giving varian a single punch, knocking him down, and that's it, you win. (bet your ass I'm gonna take that quest and repeat it 50 times before turning it in BWAHAHHAHAHAAHA)

Bah, damn you! I would have given you a Scroll!

It makes sense; both of them respect physical power so having the newest addition to the factions able to land a punch/kick on them would be enough to show the skills are 'good' enough to help in the war.

I didn't knew I was viable for one, otherwise I'd ask you one AGES ago. I've been without my wow fix for a month, :S I've been VERY bored lately.
My guild-leader just found out a few hours ago and she sent me the scroll. I've already contacted my in-game "benefactor" who sells me gamecards for gold, and told him to get me one, 7 days is more than enough time for me to rack up the 10k gold I need for that.
I also used the benefits of the scroll to turn my alliance paladin "Solarius" into a horde paladin "Solaria".
EHEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE
I only need 1 alliance toon (my druid, which is versatile enough to cover all my needs in the alliance). Plus I have planned to make an alliance lock once MoP rolls out.

Heh, oh well, still lots of people in the SoR thread to get the other 18 mounts from =P. Least my current main has the Spectral Gryphon.

Yeah Rank; they are another of the Forged races heh; the bright gold metallic skin kind of gives that away.
