I apologize if this has already been asked, but I'm very curious: where can I begin reading the very beginning of the lore? Also, do quests play a role in the lore? I'm going to start playing WoW on Friday and I'm really interested in learning about the lore, but I have no idea where to begin. I generally like to read quests, mainly because it reels my attention, but also because I like to become absorbed in the storyline. Is this possible with quests? Or could I skip reading quests entirely and just read the lore online or wherever?
the main website is a good place to start
http://us.battle.net/wow/en/game/lore/#latest-story-so-far
read all the 5 chapters on the section "the history of warcraft".
it skims a lot of details, and glosses over a lot of stuff, but it will give you a nice summary of the events of Warcraft 1, Warcraft 2, the expansion of Warcraft 2, Warcraft 3, and the expansion of Warcraft 3.
All of those games are VERY important to understand the lore, and the background of the world of warcraft, however, other than warcraft 3 and its expansion, its very unlikely that you'll find the other 2 games, so its best to read a summary of what went down in them by reading those 5 chapters.
Once you're done with those, you can expand any doubts from Wowpedia.
Articles in wowpedia that I recomend you read are "Burning legion" (Main group of bad guys) "Sargeras" (Ultimate Villain) "Old Gods" (Enigmatic beings that apparently now are more important than even Sargeras) "Twilight Hammer" (Main villains of this expansion)
"Lich King" and "Scourge" (Main villains of the previous expansion)
and of course, the articles of the Horde, Alliance, and each of their individual races.
That's a lot of reading I know, but this is a really vast game, and its lore has been expanded over and over for the past 15 years xD so you got a lot of catching up to do.
I'd recommend you read the books too, Adamsm has them all in chronological order if u check his signature (The third link of his signature) that is the list you gotta follow to read them. As to how to get them....... try buying them, but if you can't find/afford them you could get them online.
Most of them are a good read (Skip the book "Cycle of Hatred" its a horrible book, that contributes almost nothing to the lore, and its atrociously written.)
Without further more to say, Welcome to World of Warcraft =) enjoy your stay.
(For ANY question regarding the horde, orcs, or blood elves, just ask me :P)

I was talking with a friend the other day, and got to thinking. What if all this nonsense with Deathwing has been a massive bait-and-switch? It's perfect and very, very classic Old-God style. N'Zoth is gathering his forces/power/whatever. But he needs time. C'thun's qiraji got stomped. Yogg's hold over Ulduar wasn't complete. He needs time to prepare.
What does he do? Send that big, dumb, screen-stealing dragon to go and make a big sound and fury. All through Cataclysm, Deathwing always felt like a front to me. He's too big and too loud - sure, his face is on the box, but there had to be more to it than that.
We never polished off N'Zoth's forces in Vashj'ir. We spent a lot of time in Uldum being distracted by Deathwing and Al'Akir, then trooped off to the Highlands to deal with the Bastion of Twilight and Cho'gall.
We've spent so much time and effort running around putting down brushfires that Deathwing started while only giving the slightest nod to the man behind the curtain. It all seems to fit nicely - with Mists being centered a lot more on us as small-time heroes as opposed to practical demigods, the Aspects depowered, now's the perfect time for N'Zoth to do his Big Reveal. The world event they talked about in the interview? Could very well be something in the Shifting Sands style. Something to pull all of us as players together and remind us that we are, ultimately, tiny parts of a greater whole while we work to bring down the Big Bad, no doubt with help from some Pandarian envoys.
I know it's far-fetched, but I'd love to see N'Zoth show up, and I still hold hope Blizz will give him to us for the transition into MoP.

Since MoP has no big bad, probably not. We'll probably deal with N'Zoth in the expansion after that, as well as dealing with one of his prime creations, Queen Azshara and the Naga army.

We've never killed an Old God though; we've only just lobotomized Yogg and C'thun; we'll probably just end up doing that to N'Zoth as well. And C'thun was thought to have been killed, which is why It wasn't sealed in a prison. Arthas only killed a more evolved Faceless One during the rush to the Frozen Throne.

Since the so called 'dead' body of C'thun was still talking to Cho'gall and trying to corrupt Med'an, it's not dead. Same with Yogg; it's not possible to kill the Old Gods, so we just make them harmless for a few thousand years.

Probably not; we're probably gonna find out the Mantids are the long lost cousins of the Silithid/Quarj and the Nerubians, so that would mean C'thun crafted them.

Yes, the Mantids are a race of insect men, who look like Mantis'.

Sounds like the Mantids are going to be Mongols, since the Pandarens built a Wall to keep them out, and they are just recently going insane. But the images at Blizzcon showed them in actual clothing rather then none as you see on the Quarji or the Nerubian upper classes; still gonna be interesting to find out if they are a third species that was crafted by C'thun or not.
