Exactly, which is basically what I said. The reason Forsaken have free will is because the val'kyr are not bound to the Lich King anymore, who was controling the val'kyr; and by extension the creations of the val'kyr.Think of it, not in terms of free will or no, but in terms of mental capabilities.
If you recall my post
here
, there are two basic types of Necromancy. One creates a free agent who can operate outside of the will of the necromancer, while the other is simply a puppet who receives its animatory power directly from the necromancer. Sister Svalna resurrected a dwarf and an elf, but they were of the latter type, and I doubt they would have been able to operate after her death (game mechanics aside; yes, you can avoid killing them and focus on Svalna, but you're not "supposed" to).
The way I see it, Val'kyr are only able to fully resurrect Vrykul-derived individuals, however, especially skilled Val'kyr are also able to make puppets out of other races.

So, I did
this quest
today, and it looks like Blizzard has finally decided to give the official story to why the Dreadlords keep coming back. If you wait for the Commander to come into the room after killing Bal, he says that it's impossible to kill a Dreadlord in the mortal plane, and we just send them back into the Twisting Nether, and at some point we might end up facing off against all three of the brothers.
Edit: Transcript:
Crusade Commander Eligor Dawnbringer:
Well done, heroes. Balnazzar has been a threat for far too long. He had a hand in the Scourge and the Scarlet Crusade, two of our most difficult fores. The Risen may have tipped the balance against us, had they time to fester.
Regrettably, Balnazzar is not yet finished. Defeating a Dreadlord in the mortal plane only sends it back to the Twisting Nether. He will be back one day, perhaps even working again with his brothers, Varimathras and Deatheroc.
For now, we have regained control over this half of Stratholme and should rejoice for that. The former Bastion of the Silver Hand is back in the hands of its rightful owners. Countless treasures to the order reside here, and we now have a fortified location to launch our next assault.
This is where you come in, heroes. The war for Stratholme is not yet over. Leave this are and travel east to the Eastwall Gate. It is the service entrance to the city, and the last remaining opening into Lord Aurius Rivendare's scourge-infested domain. If we defeat him, Stratholme will be ours once more.
I will meet you in Alonsus Chapel. It is the holy place where Uther the Lightbringer was ordained into the Silver Hand. It is the only building the Scourge cannot touch, and will be our forward base of operations into that half of the city. With your help, Straholme will become the capital of the Light and a new beginning for Lordaeron.

We destroy the physical vessel but not their soul/essence; once they are back in the Nether, they rebuild their body?

So, basically, the Dreadlords are like Liches - just without a soul jar?

Apparently.

speaking of elementals, since Al'akir is slain inside his own elemental prison, does this means he's dead for good?

then all we gotta do is wait for the future expantion in xortoth and end the dreadlords once and for all.
slight offtopic: Dark Simulacrum=BEST.SPELL.EVER!!!!!!
hello? unholy DK buffed to the teeth with avenging wrath? AWESOMENESS.

I still belive that enough magical energy can kill a Dreadlord for good - hence why Tichondrius hasn't reappeared (okay, he shows up in Felwood, but it's in flashback form).

Except the quote says that if they are killed on the mortal plane(which Xortoth would be), they just go back to the Nether again; we'd have to travel into the Nether to get rid of them once and for all.

Can't enough physical power kill them too? When Sargeras discovered them, it was said he defeated them easily, but they corrupted him. Now, did he kill them, or did they merely go into hiding?

He threw them all into a prison.

He threw them all into a prison.
Ohh, okay, and then he opened them prisons when he decided the Titans were the reason he was depressed, forming the Burning Crusade?

Pretty much.

Precisely. But it wasn't just "oh, he was depressed" after some thought he had come to the conclusion that order was a lie and chaos was the way everything should be. That is the goal of the Burning Legion and the reason for the Burning Crusade.

So, does he ... well, destroy planets and stuff because he believes chaos should rule, or to undo everything the Titans made and ruled over?
Pretty much.
Awesome :)
