yhea, I have done the battle for undercity on both sides of the conflict, and the alliance version is quite lame compared to the horde one.
here's a quick review of both.
Horde version:
we enter UC by the front gate, there's blight everywere, varimathras does a short "bad-guy" speech, then makes a portal and leaves, thrall then summons a tsunami to clear the yard of any blight.
and then the fun begins, we start to battle for controll of the outer yard, fighting wave after wave of undead mobs, as well as catapults that shoot blight.
on this stage, sylvannas fights REALLY cool, she sings "lament of the highborne" and manages to shoot a volley of 50 arrows, I'm not kidding, when she uses her volley skill EVERY MOB ON THE YARD DIES, there are so many arrows flying at the same time, that depending on your positioning they can tottaly blot out your screen.
it's amazing and incredible to see, during this whole stage sylvannas sings, and shoots volleys to the enemy (using her shriek spell when she's swarmed with too many enemys on close range)
thrall keeps it more simple, using thunderstorm, and chain lightning.
after 20 waves of undead defeated, a giant grobulus-clone raid boss shows up, we kill him and that's it for the yard.
thrall sylvannas, a few grunts, and the players then go to terena's tomb, 2 of the elevators are blocked by debris, and the only one unblocked is jammed at the bottom, what's worst is that they placed spikes on flames down there to kill anyone stupid enough to jump (like the ret pally on my group who just jumped planning to use bubble, but forgetting that he had used avenging wrath just a few secs before)
thrall summons a tornado to lower everyone down safely, and then we arrive at the central core of UC, after a small speech of sylvannas and thrall, we battle our way to the apothecarium, killing several waves of undead mobs and legion mobs (felguards mostly)
on the outer ring of the apothecarium, varimathras shows up, does another short taunt, and then boom, ambush of the burning legion.
we gotta fight on 2 sides, the ground is infested with waves of undead mobs and legion mobs (sucubbi, dreadlords, felguarsd and felhunters)
but the roof is full too (doomguards flying everywhere).
this is were sylvannas trully shows why was she the ranger general on her life, and a banshee queen on her death.
she actually jumps on the back of 1 of the doomguards and uses him as an improvised flight mount to SHOOT THE OTHER DOOMGUARSD FROM THE BACK OF THE ONE SHE GRABBED.
after 1-shotting 3 or 4 doomguards, she jumps from doomguard to doomguard and kills them with her dagger, 1-shoted each of them, once the last one is dead, she jumps to the ground once more and helps thrall with the ground forces.
after the doomguards on the roof respawn she repeats the whole process again.
while on the ground thrall uses the same skills that on the yard, thunderstorm and chain lightnign.
after 20 waves on the ground and 5 waves on the roof, a second raid boss comes, this one is a massive doomguard, identical to kazaak.
once he's dead, we continue battling more and more waves of undead and demons till we reach the throne room.
at the entrance of the throne room varimatras causes a cave-in to block the way, but thrall swipes the debris away as if it was nothing, and proceeds fowards.
at this point the grunts remain behind to continue killing what's left of the undead and legion forces behind.
at the throne room we find varimatras opening 6 portals that link to the twisting nether to summon his master, and OMG, WE HEAR THE VOICE OF SARGERAS HERE.
this part is epic, while any of the portals is up varimathras is inmune to all, we must clear wave after wave of elite legion demons (pit lords, eredar warlocks, wrathguards, shivarras, fel guards, felhunters, dreadlords, and succubi) after every 3 or 4 waves is dead 1 portal collapses, varimathras trows some insult and more mobs show up.
after all 6 portals are closed, we hear Sargeras chewing out varimathras for his failure, and varimathras comes to finish the job himself, so we fight.
during this third phase of the battle again thrall uses thunderstorm and chain lightning, while sylvannas uses bow from range, daggers to melee and shriek spells when overwhelmed.
after varimatras is dead, the rest of the battle is indentical to both versions, varian+jaina come to the throne room, he foolishly atacks thrall and sylvannas, and jaina saves his butt from a can of woopass.
Alliance version:
we enter the sewers, and battle severa patrolls of undead and legion forces, on the entire battle, no exeptions here, jaina uses only blizzard, frost bolt, frost nova, and summons water elementals (=O she's a frost mage? Damn I had my money bet taht she was arcane >.<)
varian uses only wirlwind and the ever amazing and mega cool Heroic Leap (wich I'm still hoping player warriors will get one day)
so, no intro on this one, we simply get in and, we battle a bunch of backdoor guards, al lthe way to the pit on the sewers, on that pit we fight about 20 waves of mobs, and then the worm shows up.
now this fight is slightly more intresting than the tank/spank raids on the horde version, cuz the worm can grab you and trow you away, the problem is....... it does it waaay too often, so u can't really unleash all your power on this beast, at best u can use 2 or 3 skills be trown away, and come back, rinse and repeat.
after the worm is dead, we exit the sewers, varian observes a bunch of undead corpses, and horde grunt corpses, makes a small coment about it, and we move to the apothecarium.
problem is...... that hte horde already finished the battle, the road is clear, no mobs to kill, the horde already did all the work. so it's a peacefull quick walk to the lab of putress.
once there, we face the mad scientist, he unleashes his infinite ooze waves, and trows barrels of blight, and that's about it, once he's dead, we head to the throne room , and the rest as they say "it's history".
resume:
on horde version:
Thrall: uses a tsunami to clear the yard of blight, summons a tornado to lower us to safety on the elevator, uses an earthquake to clear a massive boulder and tear it apart like tissue paper, and summons massive thunderstorms every 10 secs followed by multiple chain lightnings.
Sylvannas: Greatly inspires us with her AWESOME song "lament of the highborne", on the yard uses volleys of arrows that even the archers of the movie "300" would be jealous of, uses her shriek spell to suck the souls out of every enemy near her, on the inner ring jumps to the back of a doomguard, and using him as an inprovised mount, proceeds to head-shot other doomguards, and jump from guard to guard sapping necks at the same time, and then on the last battle, does standard Shoot+melee that most hunters do.
Players: we clear the yard, we clear the inner rings, we kill a massive grobulus clone, kill a doomlord, stop a legion invation by closing those portals, and even slay several scores of the strongest demon species on the legion's army (such as pit lords and shivarras)
Alliance version:
Jaina: she does common mage spells, that's about it, hers are stronger, but are still the same any mage uses, she just casts frostbolt, frost nova, blizzard, and summons several water elementals, and at the end of the battle teleports everyone out.
Varian: all the fight he only uses wirlwind, and heroic leap, and while the leap is QUITE AMAZING sadly it requires range to use, and varian is almost allways swarmed in melee range (since he's the main tank here) so we don't get too many chances to see him use it.
Players: we enter the sewers, kill a worm, enter the city, see that someone else already beated us to the punch and killed the enemy, enter putress lab, kill him and then on the throne room we don't do much save to a free shots at thrall and sylvannas, only to be ported out.
final outcome:
Horde goal: retake the undercity from enemy hands, and it was a victory.
Alliance goal: conquer the undercity, and it was a defeat.
all in all, horde version is quite better, 10 out of 10, to the alliance version I give it a 4 out of 10, mostly due to varian's heroic leap, and the mechanics on the worm fight. but it was too short, no awesomeness, no epicness, and ended on defeat for them.
(BTW this whole chunk has massive spoilers, forgot to add a proper warning xD)

As a Mage. I would love to do this in the alliance side. I wish average Blizzard wasn't channeled ^^.
hehehe yhea, I bet u wish u coud summon mutliple water elementals xD, yhea jaina is cool, I'm just disapointed that she dind't do any extraordinary feats on this battle like sylvannas did.
I mean no player not now not later not ever is gonna be able to do the part where she jumps from doomguard to doomguard killing them in mid-air.
and now that we talk about mages I got a question, what's the diference from a "Wizard" a "Mage" and a "Sorcerer"?
I though these meant the same thing, but aparently they are diferent (and in Neverwinter Nights Wizard and Mage are diferent classes)

Difference? Different schools, different powers, different backgrounds.

Alright, guys... lets take a better look at this...
On the Alliance side, you get to be flung across by a giant worm.
How is that not epic?
And then there is Putress' failed experiments, which are just damn right fun to fight, plus there is his epic voice, and him charging up for power like a little "Frankenstien" theme :)
The best part about fighting Putress, though, was that he can kick you and send you flying. Epic. Just Epic.
Plus, there was a lot of special effects during the sewer part, like the blight n' stuff.
Horde goal: retake the undercity from enemy hands, and it was a victory.
In Thrall's eyes, its a defeat.
-
Alright now? See the fun in it? I, for one, like both versions.
yo bro' I did said tha the best part of the alliance version is the worm fight, however squishing a bunch of ooze aint as epic as stickign your blade on elite legion generals, I mean really on the throne room you fight up to 7 pit lords half the size of mannoroth at the same time.
during the sewer part there were no special effects, and no blight, I have done on the PTR both sides of this battle, several times, so I know it back and forth.
and I didn't said that the alliance version was boring, I said it was waaay more disapointing than the horde side.
I mean really after you kill the worm and prepare to fight to retake the city, surprise! the horde already beated you to it xD that outta feel like a punch in the crotch.
in thrall's eyes it was a defeat because varian declared the fourth war after this battle and what thrall has always wanted was peace with the humans, but regardless of that, the main objective of the horde wich was to retake the city was fullfilled, while the alliance objective wich was to conquer the city failed (but they did managed to kill putress)
also, if my memory serves darkton, u said that u've only done the alliance side, since your horde toon never set foot on dragonblight :P
after all the first time I mentioned sylvannas shooting 50 arrows at the same time, and jumping from doomguard to doomguard in mid-air with her daggers and bow you said I made it up.
last but not least, both versions are fun (on the alliance side, watchign varian do the heroic leap was enough of a prize for me, that skill is EXTREMELY COOOOOOOOL) but the horde side is more epic.
like WAY more epic.
alliance conclution: yay we stumbled on a lab, killed a mad scientist, and his deadly army of goo and ooze.
Horde conclution: LOK'TAR OGAR!. we stoped a major legion invation, defeated multiple legion generals and elite troopers (Shivarra and pit lords aint no riff-raff those are like the best of the best in the legion's arsenal) managed to ruin sargeras's plans, and put an end to the traitor varimathras.
(not to mention that the horde battle is longer, more epic, the alliance side is too short since there's hardly anything to kill outside of the sewers, it's basically they get in, kill a worm, walk to a lab, kill the scientist and then get ported out.)

The sound file was labeled "Sargeras.wav" or something.

I have no idea why everyone keeps thinking this, its almost impossible for that voice to have been Sargeras'.Why? No one knows where He is after all; they still don't know if what was inside of Medivh was the real deal or just an avatar. Even the comics aren't clear on that.

And where is this sound file?
Really, lets think this through...
Sargares has been presumed dead for decades, and all of a sudden he is about to do something on Azeroth? He would have just came out and killed everyone in one swing if he really was there.
Uh.. no. He needs a portal... oh wait, wasn't that what the Dreadlord was trying to do?
And no one presumes him dead, they know He's out there somewhere in the Dark.

We know he is alive because Bllizard said that... Azeroth'sraces think he is dead.
Varimathras was just sitting around, he was not making a portal... but then again, I have not done the Horde version in weeks, so I may have forgotten.
I thought it was his brother, Balazz- or what ever.
Or mabye even Deathorc
I haven't played in over a year and even I know that's a load of bollocks.
Read the quest text again.

Azeroth'sraces think he is dead.Heh right....
Medivh knows he alive.
The Legion knows he's alive.
The Titan's knows he's alive.
Dalaran and the Mage council knows he alive.
The Naaru and their Draenei Allies knows he alive.
Shall I go on?

Brann also believes, along with others, that the portion of the spirit that escaped still endures, hungering for revenge.
To this day, it is unknown what really happened to Sargeras' real body or avatar.
In an interview to Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson they said that "he's out there somewhere", that "you can’t put him down" and "he’s not going to stay down for long". At last Metzen said: I'd be very disappointed in us if we didn’t leverage him fully.
How about you prove the Dalaran, Dreanei, and Narru know he is alive first?Dalaran knows the truth about Medivh, all of the Truth, young Trust told them everything after all. *cough*ToD*cough*
The Naaru and the Draenei have been fighting the Legion for eternity(compared to Azeroth), and if the Big Bad was really dead, wouldn't they stop looking for the Army of Light?

All I heard was that its unknown what really happend to Sargeras' real body or avatar.
And that's it's unlikely that he's dead, don't forget that part.

this proves you haven't done the horde version of the battle (or weren't paying attention when u did it.
Varimathras was summoning 6 portals dude, his plan was to summon either sargeras, or a liutenant for sargeras (his corporeal form got destroyed on the new war of the ancients, but his spirit is unkillable, like cenarius at best u can destroy his physical shell but his spirit can't be destroyed, only banished)
at this point, we know that sargeras is still the big-boss of the legion, and what varimatras was trying to do was pretty much the same thing Kil'jaeden tried on the sunwell.
as for the races knowing or not that he's alive, that's irrelevant man, the burning legion knows he's alive and that's all that matters, varimatras was following sargera's orders.
on the throne room varimatras wasn't sitting arroudn (there is no chair there in the first place XD)
play the battle again on the ptr dude, and U'll see it, 6 portals, hundreds of legion generals pouring out of it.
we stoped the legion, dead on it's track, that alone makes the horde version of that battle 3 times better than the alliance version.
again the alliance version wasn't boring, but it was disapointing, they just came in from behind (pls no jokes about it xD) killed a worm, dispatched the rear guard, and walked trough the city after everyone was dead already, dispatched putress, and then came to the throne room.
on the horde, you not only fight this massive war on the front yard, and then on the inner ring of the apothecarium, but then as a fitting conclution you prevent a demon invation on the throne room killing pit lord generals by the hundreds.
what more epic than that?
if you want to hear the most powerfull bad-guy on the universe speak, do the battle of the undercity, horde version.
:D it's 20 times better than the alliance version (wich does has it's merits, but it's nowhere near the quality of the horde side)
