I'm still seeing all of the Naz'jatar rising up out of the ocean when Azshara finally makes her move, and wiping out the Maelstrom completely....plus, it's the way to create a 'new' continent for the expansion to be built around.
Seems we have a
similar idea
on the matter. Besides, who says that they have to use that Old God for this expansion? Could be they decide not to use one at all. It wouldn't make much sense, and I don't know what else they could throw in to replace it as content, but they could do it.

Neptulon? This one might be completely focused around the Elements. I think that'd be cool.

I knew that desing was familiar, and this is why.
Old timers of the classic-era FPS shooters will recognize the
Iron Liches
from the classic videogame
Heretic
.
ahh nice touch blizz, nice touch. dang I miss those classic era games, I think Ima play doom and hexen again xD for old time's sake.

First thing I thought of was
Phlegyas

The face certainly does look like the iron liches though. :-o

Lies! It's obviously the Burger King's Halloween Costume!

boo, they are based off the Iron Liches, wich are even older than zedd (making zedd a copycat of them not the other way arround :P)
besides, the grin on the iron liches resembles more the one in the DK helmet, so does the horns, and last but not least, Zedd's face is too futuristic to look like a proper skeleton (with the lazer visor, and the metallic thing on his jaw that don't quite looks like theeth)

What I mean is that the Ashbringer was destined for Alexandros Mograine and his sons. Well, he died. Renault was corrupt and Darion is a death knight. I hate how Tirion can just take a sword that was not made for him, purify it, and go gun-ho with it. Seeing as how the Mograine family is dead, the sword that put them on the spot should just go away.
If you remember the battle of Light's Hope. Darion willingly gave Tirion the sword. The sword seems to understand and 'allows' itself to be wielded by Tirion.
If Tirion were to die, I view Ashbringer as a sentient weapon capable of 'choosing' its wielder. If someone else were to use it, they would merely be helping it along its search for who it wants. I forsee it seeking out either Darion or one of Tirions family or perhaps resting until it can find one truely worthy to wield it.
Valan or some other Draenei actually sounds like a nice cannadate, or perhaps a Blood Knight.
You give a little too much credit for a sword. The Ashbringer in my view was forged and created for Alexandros Mograine, if he would die, his sons. Rather letting the sword remain corrupt in Darion's hands, Blizz gave the sword to Tirion just to make the aging paladin that more mary sue. And I would never let a Blood Knight use the Ashbringer, never. The sword has too much history in human lore to be handed to a blood elf.
Sue-like Plot Device or not, I believe what happened still needs a quick analysis.
What we saw: Darion throws Ashbringer to Tirion. It is purified when the Paladin grabs it and he proceeds to omgwtf pwn the LK.
This begs the questions;
What purified the Ashbringer? Darion's escape from the Lich King's control? Tirions sue-like pure heart? The fact it was willingly given up?
What happened to the Ashbringer? Was it purified or, in fact, freed. Is it now, for all intents and purposes, merely a sword?
If Ashbringer shows up again in the future, I doubt Blizz will give it any more story. In Wrath, it was little more than a slide-show after the Battle of Light's Hope. But, I have always been a fan of weapons with a ton of Lore.

Well, I think that basically what happened when Tirion received the sword was the same thing that happened when Alexandros first showed it to the other leaders of the Silver Hand. Tirion infused light into the Ashbringer, and it repurified itself.
He revealed it to the other leaders of the Silver Hand, suggesting that they search for the crystal's polar opposite — a manifestation of the Light itself — to be used against the impending undead holocaust. Mograine's peers, appalled at the sight of this dark crystal, attempted to destroy it with a holy spell. Unexpectedly, the crystal absorbed the spell and became its antithesis, the very crystal of pure light that Mograine suggested moments before. It was decided that from this crystal a weapon would be forged that would smite the undead with such power that only a cloud of ash would remain in its wake — The Ashbringer.

Maybe at the end of the Abyssal Maw dungeon Azshara's Naga shows up and steal Neptulon's trident (if we fight Neptulon at the dungeon). Nar'jira the battle-maiden is still alive so she might be the one leading the Naga after the death of Lady Naz'jar.
There rise of Nazjatar could make a cool opening cinematic for an expansion.

We
protect
Neptulon from Ozumat, a squid-like servant of the Old Gods.

Doesn't mean he is good.

I think Neptulon is "chaotic neutral" or something like that... He's paranoid because every aquatic race wants to kill him for his trident so he sides with the players for now.

The death of Darion purified the Blade and released the soul of his father.

Eeh... Power Rangers are older than you think.
and I doubt Blizzard, as reference happy as they are, would reference the PR in such a subtle manner.
Heretic is from 1993 :P lord zedd didn't showed up untill the second season of Power Rangers wich was premiered in 1995.

It would surely have been recorrupted when Darion wielded it in undeath, though. I can't see an undead holding the Ashbringer for much longer than a microsecond.
