It's pretty easy once you get past the fact that there are three ratings to work around.
First, and most important, is your matchmaking rating. This is the rating that is shown on the scoreboard at the end of each match. This is the rating that controls what teams you face. Your matchmaking rating is calculated over ALL of your past games (from season 5+ iirc). It does not reset with season or team changes, and is averaged together with your other arena partner's ratings in order to match your team.
The next most important rating is your team rating. This is the rating that controls your point +/- at the end of a match as well as how many arena points you end up with every week. This rating moves based on a converging scale system that is related to your matchmaking rating. By this I mean that the system is constantly trying to match your team rating and your matchmaking rating.
For example, if your team has a match making rating of 1500, and a team rating of 0 (new team), every win you get until you reach 1500 will cause you to gain a huge amount of points, while every loss should only cause you to lose a very small amount, if any, points. This is the system trying to match your team rating (0) to your match making rating (1500). This, however, also works in reverse. If your team rating is higher than your match making rating, and you win, you can expect to see very little in the way of point gains, but a huge loss in points if you lose. Now when those two numbers approach each other, the +/- for any given match will be relatively equal.
Now, from the sound of your post, you've reached this 'equilibrium' point already. You're going 50/50 on games, which means the system has 'placed' you (your team rating and match making rating are roughly equal). In order to progress in this situation you MUST either overcome the 50/50 status quo and win more games than you lose, or win against higher rated teams. There is no way around this (this is the
reason
the matchmaking rating was put in) as the point loss from losing is roughly equal to the point gain from winning when fighting equal teams, you need to win more than you lose, or fight a higher rated team and win (thus getting more points than you'd lose on your next match). When you're at this position, the system believes that it has identified your actual skill level. If you cannot progress past this point, it means you're not good enough to. Simple as that :/
Now as far as gear is concerned, all of the deadly pieces start at 1300. The 'starting' matchmaking rating for a brand new team is 1500, and pushing to 1300 from there is not that difficult. If you cannot reach 1500 now, then you probably could not maintain 1500 in previous seasons. That said, you can do just fine in hateful gladiator gear. Hell, I have a 1791 rating at the moment, and not a single piece of deadly set gear (and only 2 pieces of furious off-set, with the rest being deadly off-set stuff).
Lastly, for the sake of completeness, your personal rating (resets to 1000 on team switch or season change) moves in exactly the same way as your team rating does in regards to your matchmaking rating. In other words, the system will try to match your personal rating to your team rating over time. This is there to act as a measure of participation on a team (if you participate enough the system will eventually match your team and personal ratings perfectly). If your personal rating is more than 250 (I think? Might be 500) points under your team rating, you earn rating based on your personal rating instead.
It's also worth noting that regardless of your team rating, if it's under 1500 points you will gain 261 points a week (as if your team rating was 1500).
Hope that helps :P
