Basically, at the point of emotional extremes, Phillip becomes rather childish in his actions.
This is due to his sort of "abandonment" issues which stem from killing his own parents twice, along with a lot of other screw ups since his death.
I guess I can also link his impulsiveness to this...
And why would that kill her?

She can endure it for a little while without freaking out.

Well since the spell will wrap around her entire body, and it's almost like barb wire....yeah....and with the new spell over the cell, Kali can enjoy it for quite a while.
