BlizzConline 2021 Diablo II: Resurrected Deep Dive
Full HD Remaster of Diablo II
After 20 years, the genre-defining legendary game is back including the Lord of Destruction expansion but now as a full high-definition remaster: 4k visuals, 7.1 sound, and shot-for-shot remake of all the cinematics.
Blizzard partnered with Vicarious Visions on Diablo II: Resurrected and their proud to officially welcome them to the Blizzard family.
Why Remaster Diablo II in 2021?
Diablo II was a very special game to Blizzard and recently experienced its 20th anniversary. Blizzard wanted to bring a true authentic Diablo II experience to the current audience and invite new players to experience it for the first time.
Vicarious Visions worked with Activision Blizzard on Battle.net integration as well the Tony Hawk and Crash Bandicoot remasters. Perfect match and progression to work together on Diablo II: Resurrected.
Enhancing the Visuals of a Beloved Classic
Ton of inspiration from the original Diablo II art. The key was delivering an authentic nostalgic experience that players felt 20 years ago. Every design choice should ignite that nostalgia and reinforce the emotional connection from the original Diablo II.
Came up with the 70/30 visual guide. 70% should be classic and what works from the original game. Shapes, colors, tones, that should all be one to one and preserve the original design. With the 30% they're seeking to elevate that original art and be a visual step forward.
Game has shifted from 2D to 3D posing a few challenges. Blizzard had to write a completely new physical-based renderer on top of the original game to deal with models, dynamic lighting and visualfx.
All of the items are being completely redone both icon art and 3D spatial art. Inspiration was taken from original documentation from Blizzard North that included real-world references giving real-world context.
Original Diablo II had a lot of detail already, so it was about increasing that fidelity.
New Visual Feature: Zoom camera to really explore all the fine details of your character and the environment.
Legacy Toggle Feature: Allows you to swap between the new and old visuals. The new 60FPS art engine is running on top of the 25FPS original game staying true to the Diablo II logic and cycle.
Hit rates, cast speed, recovery, everything works off those same intervals. Movement still respects the grid of the original game that was based off table-top gaming just with better animation.
Characters and Cosmetics
Goal was to be one-to-one in parity with the original Diablo II. They built every piece or armor that was in the original but connected the icon visual and the actual art on your character.
Unique items with special icon art now show on your character.
Cinematics & Sound
The entire full 28-minutes of cinematics will be remastered with high fidelity art.
All of the audio has been remastered. Surround sound, ambient sound, and effect sound has been added for a richer experience. They did, however, use a measured hand when modifying sounds. There's just some sounds that are iconic to Diablo II and should not be changed.
Keeping the Fun of Diablo II but with New Features
Some of the imperfections of Diablo II are iconic to the magic of the original game. Balance, monster, spawn rates, items, drop rates are all the same. They're really looking to sand down some of the rough edges like compatibility issues, resolution issues, and visual enhancements. Does this addition stray too much from the original?
A shared stash has been implemented across all your characters. Ladder and Non-Ladder characters as well as online and offline characters will have separate shared stashes. No more risky muling strategies!
UI has been reimagined yet remains faithful to the classic globes and icons, but integrates elements for a cleaner visual. Advanced stats screen helps summarize all stats you get from items instead of having to manually calculate.
Auto-Gold - Opt in to automatically pick up gold, but can turn off feature for a more traditional playstyle.
Diablo II: Resurrected will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series S/X, Playstation 4/5.
Controller Support - Allows use of a controller on both PC and console to provide additional accessibility options. The game still thinks you're using a mouse and keyboard even though you're using a controller.
Playing on console differs from PC in a few ways. You're changing the way you play the game on PC where you're an eye in the sky directing your character. On console you're actually being your character meaning pathfinding is gone. You'll notice this in a few different ways notably with movement skills. With the Sorceress Teleport ability you click to teleport to a location on PC whereas on console you teleport a set distance in the direction you specify.
Cross progression across all platforms but does require purchase of Diablo II: Resurrected for each platform.
Lord of Destruction Expansion Included
Diablo II: Lord of Destruction is included as part of the remaster of Diablo II: Resurrected.
Players retain the ability to play a 'Classic-mode' non-expansion character if they so wish.
Easier to interact with your stash including quick keys.
Item comparison tooltips by holding shift to compare items. There are no gear suggestions in the comparison because the stats vary so much.
Five more language localizations added.
Front-End including character selection and character creation completely modernized.
Updated visuals make the game feel darker and more sinister than the original.
Multiplayer & Returning Features
Diablo II: Resurrected retains 8-player multiplayer.
PvP still exists in the form of the original by opening the party window and engaging hostility.
Trading still functions the same as the original including chat channels.
Major improvements to searching server games. Browse all difficulty of games even if you've graduated to the higher difficulty.
Ladder seasons will have reduced durations. Currently 6-months but shorter durations will hopefully incentivize play. No other additional ladder incentives beyond the what the original game provided.
Characters will no longer expire.
No more region-specific servers. Diablo II: Resurrected will function off global servers so players in the US can play with their friends in the EU.
Duplicate names will be allowed but will be appended with your Battletag so other players can quickly identify you.
Diablo II: Resurrected team frequently referred to Blizzard North source files or concept art when looking to update game assets. Sometimes individual pixels weren't enough but they were able to take these source models and use them as a stepping stone for new visuals.
Followed similar design decisions like reusing character design meshes for different monsters.
Inspiration also came from Diablo I from code that was commented out or certain models.
Discoveries and organization of that old art and data is still being done today.
Resolving Current Issues
Moving over to the modern Battle.net helps solves a lot of issues with connections, duping, bots, security, etc.
You're still allowed to play offline; however this does require a one-time online authentication that does need to be refreshed after a considerable amount of time.
