BlizzCon 2015 - World of Overwatch Panel

The panel features Michael Chu, Chris Metzen, and William Petris.
Overwatch has a very diverse world which is represented by its multiple maps.
The Omnic Crisis: robots turned against mankind. Each country had found a different way to combat the threat.
Russia created giant mechs to fight the robot army. Germany made crusader armor. USA has enhanced soldier program.
When the Omnic Crisis ended due to Overwatch but Russia had to do it alone.
Watchpoint Gibratlr
Watchpoint Gibratlr is an abandoned Overwatch base inhabited by Winston. He's trying to decide if he should contact the rest of Overwatch about the new thoughts of the world.
Dorado
Dorado features festival with lights, and people who are celebrating the end of the Omnic war. However, there are still criminal originations in the shadows.
Hollywood
The Hollywood map features Halfred Glitchbot who is being targeted by the Omnic and needs heroes to protect him throughout the map.
Numbani
Numbani is the one place that robots and humans live together. However, it's currently threatened by the villainous hero doomfist.
Volskaya Industries
Set in Russia. The map was designed to show Russia's pride of defeating the Omnic Crisis without the help of Overwatch. They had two goals in mind: To make it look like a "winter wonderland" and to make it look beautiful.
You can see the Sentinels being built in the backgroun of the map. If you look close enough, you can see a small cockpit where the pilot would control the Sentinels.
Hero Teasers
There was a teaser for Roadhog on the King's Row map for over a year. If you look closely at a newspaper, you can see Roadhog's silhouette and his name! D'Va also was teaser in the Hanamura arcade.
There have been hints of more of these teasers in the maps. We'll be on the lookout for them!
Out of Game Storytelling
There are plans to implement specific dialogue between certain heroes like Tracer and Winston or Hanzo and Genji.
Overwatch is trying something new with hero teasers. With more out of game storytelling in the form of news articles, music and reality television, this approach gives players more information about their backstory before they even meet the hero.
There are plans to do storytelling through comics. This comic is going to tell the story of the first Overwatch strike squad. This will include Gabriel Reyes (Reaper) and Jack Morrison (Soldier 76) and Pharah's mother.
Overwatch is also going to have comic shorts. This is currently used with World of Warcraft and with 21 heroes there is a lot of content to show. This is going to be a primary way to get the story out.
Blizzard wants to do more Cinematic Storytelling for Overwatch similar to the first trailer.
Animated shorts are also in the works for Overwatch. We got a short teaser of some animations coming in the future. These shorts are not necessarily continuous but each short should be self contained and help develop story for a few heroes.
Q&A
Q: Will there be an art book containing concept art, lore and more?
A: There will be a source book that comes with the collectors edition.
Q: Does Blizzard Entertainment exist in this future world? Could there be a Blizzcon map?
A: Nothing official, but there may be some rough talks of a map called Blizzneyland, but there's only been a couple chats. Blizzard definitely exists in this future.
Q: Are any of the character in the game gay?
A: Yes. Stay tuned for more storytelling on the topic.
Q: Given no limitations, who would you love to show more backstory?
A: Bastion
A: Zenyatta
A: Genji
A: Everyone
Q: As the story progresses, could we see current maps change or just the addition of new maps?
A: There has been some talks about changing maps in small ways such as a news sticker on Numbani being updated to the current news. There are options for maps in the slight different location in the same map.
Q: What did the British do to combat the Omnic crisis? Are there more people similar to Tracer?
A: We don't know what the British did but Tracer is likely one of a kind.
Q: The smaller brother in the cinematic trailer talks about someone named Soundquake. How are you going to develop that into the story?
A: You'll have to wait and see. Soundquake is still in develop.
Q: Are there any plans to intertwine your heroes with the larger comics such as Batman or Superman?
A: For now, Blizzard is going at it alone.
Q: Is there is a history between Tracer and Widowmaker?
A: These two definitely do not get along but there's more to come in the future to expand on their relationship.
Q: Why doesn't Winston likes his glasses broken?
A: When the shorts comes out, you'll get to see what happens when Winston doesn't have his glasses and who gave them to him.
