Even before the film starts, there's an easter egg! The Blizzard logo at the opening of the film includes famous characters from different franchises hidden in the letters, like Kerrigan, Arthas, and Tracer.
The opening scene (viewable at the start of the trailer) is highly reminiscent of the cinematic from
, in which an orc and human face off in the desert:
The opening shot of Ironforge, in which a lone mountaineer looks off into the distance at the snowy mountain, is highly reminiscent of the
World of Warcraft Cinematic
After meeting with Garona, Medivh turns into a raven--similar to the intro cinematic from
Stormwind and Elwynn Forest
Stormwind is faithfully rendered, down to each district having differently-colored roofs and the flightmaster being in the same location in the Trade District. The gryphon even takes the same flight path, including swerving to avoid the Trade District archway, and lands with the flight master on the right. When Stormwind is first shown on screen, the music briefly changes to the recognizable Stormwind theme in game.
The iconic mailbox was added to the streets of Stormwind:
While not visible in the film, the
reveals that the potions sold on the streets of Stormwind are named after in-game potions:
Poción de fuerza demente
Poción de destrucción
Poción de Protección contra la Escarcha
The message board in the center of Stormwind has signs for
Feria de la Luna Negra
Fiesta de la Cerveza
, Kobolds, and
Several shop signs are named after actual places in Stormwind: Honest Blades, Protective Hide, Slaughtered Lamb.
While cut from the final version of the film, Chris Metzen had a small role as a perfume vendor.
When finding the king and his entourage, Lothar doesn't go to any inn...he goes to the Lion's Pride Inn, the first inn many players encounter in World of Warcraft. The flightpath is faithfully rendered, with the gryphon headed east from Stormwind's Trade District.
In the brief scene in Westfall, Durotan and Doomhammer are looking at the crops, including Harvest Golems (aka the battle pet
Calabaza de campo
When investigating an attack near Elwynn Forest, a summoning stone can be briefly seen on the left-hand side.
In Elwynn Forest, a murloc is fishing and making his iconic sounds.
When panning over villages attacked by the orcs, the rock formation of Stone Cairn Lake is seen overhead, before the camera moves on to Redridge.
Before the Orcs ambush the Humans, Gnolls can be heard in the background.
In one of the Throne Room scenes, several crests from human kingdoms are visible--Gilneas and Lordaeron.
When King Llane leaves Stormwind for the final battle, he says goodbye to the royal family, taking care to call out his son Varian by name. While the name won't mean anything to a moviegoer, to a player this is a glimpse of Alliance leader Varian Wrynn as a child.
Durotan's Axe is fashioned after the weapon used by the orc statue in the Blizzard Entertainment courtyard.
Even though it's never called by name in the film, Medivh uses the legendary staff
. In classic WoW, casters could complete a lengthy questline to acquire this item, which opened a portal to Karazhan and looked identical to the movie version (although a bit lower-resolution).
In World of Warcraft, Orgrim Doomhammer's weapon has been passed down to his close friend Thrall, who wields it throughout all of the expansions. In Legion, Enhancement Shamans can acquire
. The in-game version looks quite similar to the movie version, minus the Frostwolf Clan Logo.
has a distinctive black dragon head on the sword hilt, and his in-game weapon

The gun given to Lothar by the Dwarves, nicknamed the Boomstick, is based on
Bocarda calibrada milimétricamente
. There are many Boomsticks in WoW, here is a
Khadgar's book that he "borrows" from Medivh's library follows the same aesthetic as WoW offhands--oversized with gems on the cover.
Several Orc Warlords are seen at different points in the film, like Kargath Bladefist with The Bladefist and Grommash Hellscream with Gorehowl.
captured a screenshot from one of the featurettes where several of the Warlords are lined up: Doomhammer, Bladefist, Durotan, and Grommash.
Killrog Deadeye also holds Gul'dan's staff in the scene immediately after the orcs make it through the Dark Portal.
At different parts of the film, the Orcs can be heard chanting "Zug Zug."
Khadgar is drawn to pick up a book that describes how the Dark Portal is opened--in lore, this is known as the Book of Medivh. One of the pages has the text "Ask Alodi," and in Legion, we hear of Alodi for the first time in game. Frost Mages can acquire the Artifact Weapon
and in an
introductory Legion quest
, we learn that Alodi was entrusted a book describing the Pillars of Creation. The player must rescue the book from Karazhan and summon the spirit of Alodi to learn more about the Pillars--the driving force behind questing in Legion. The central part of Dalaran in Legion has also received a visual update (image on the left) which more closely resembles the council room in the movie.
is Medivh's faithful tower steward, both in the movie and in game as an early boss in Karazhan. When Lothar appears exhausted from climbing up Karazhan Tower's spiral staircase, Moroes gives him a
Superpoción de sanación
which instantly restores his energy. The long stairs and Lothar's exhaustion may be a playful nod to the incredibly long run back to Karazhan when players wiped.
The Karazhan library, where Khadgar finds the fateful tome, is an area players clear after defeating
. The trash here was very tricky when
was first released in The Burning Crusade. After defeating the trash in the library, players make their way up a winding staircase, similar to the one found in the movie which Lothar struggles to climb.
When Khadgar frees Lothar from prison, he does so by getting the guard's keys after
ing him. He notes that the spell only lasts a minute and only works on the simple-minded.
The key fight between Khadgar, Lothar, and Medivh seemed to be paced like a boss fight. Medivh goes through several phases, eventually turning into a demon in his final form, while Khadgar must kite the golem into the magical rune as Lothar aggros Medivh, taunting him into the Essence Font. Using a construct to defeat its master is a concept used in other WoW boss fights like
Socrethar the Eternal
At the climactic moment when Khadgar defeats Medivh's demon and resists the fel, his character is enveloped in the golden Level Up animation.
In the final scene, Thrall floats down the river while in the background, a fishing bobber with red and blue feathers can be spotted.
The end credits roll to the World of Warcraft login screen music.
