I got an nvidia 210 1gb card for $60 and it's doing okay. It needs some driver tweaks though.

CPU is far more important than GPU. I've got an 8800GT in my system, and with my old processor (single core p4) wow would not push past 15 fps in dal at peak times. Now, with a core i7 920 (oc'd to 4ghz) i have a hard time getting the fps in dal under 40. It's usually 70+.
Seriously, WoW is CPU intensive, not GPU intensive.

This. A good mid-range Core 2 Duo will get the job done as well. I'm running the exact same GPU as fox paired with an E8400 OC'd to 3.8 and I hover around 25-30 fps in Dala and rarely drop below 30 in 25-man. Also, make sure you have at least 3 GB of DDR2 800Mhz RAM (4GB if you have a 64-bit OS) to ensure maximum performance.

WoW runs, by default, on either a single core (and a hyperthreaded core) or two physical cores (in the case of multi-core processors without hyperthreading).
To take full advantage of your core i7 you want to run this command in game: /console SET ProcessAffinityMask "85"
This will tell WoW to run on the 2 least used of your 4 physical cores (ignoring all hypertheaded cores as you do not want wow to run on both of its threads on the same physical core).
That mask equates to: 1010101 which is "use cores: 0, 2, 4, 6" (cores 1, 3, 5, and 7 are all hyperthreaded) Windows will differ WoW onto the 2 least used cores of those 4.

I've been wondering, would this work on a dual core? I have a core 2 duo E8400 and would like to squeeze a few more FPS out of the game.

I've been running nvidia 8600gt 512mb for a while now, and it runs the game great even turned up. I usually turn down some things that annoy me, but generally run 50fps almost always, except the occational heavy times in Lagaran.
Anything newer, which most stuff is, should run it no problem. Depends on what your PC can accept, and your wallet.

It already is set... core 2 duo's do not have hyperthreading, so you only have 2 logical cores. WoW's default value (3 or binary 11), already causes your core 2 duo to utilize both cores.

I just installed a XFX Radeon HD 4870 1GB card and it runs WoW at 60fps outside Dal. and 30-40fps in Dal on all high settings. Before I was getting 10-15fps in Dal and 30fps out in the world.
My computer is an AMD Phenom II 720x4 @ 3.2GHz and 4gb of RAM.
