Midway through the fight, Balnazzar shifts from his humanoid form, into a demon, taking flight. Overall, it isn't a hard fight, just keep up the DPS throughout.
THe best way to handle him, is your tank pull him to the far wall, and your healer stand with the back to the exact opposite wall.
He does an AOE stun and when I stand back like this I don't get caught up in it and I cna keep our tank alive.
He drops the flask of wisdom recipe and I have yet to see the stupid thing drop in my 78 runs of this place. *sigh
As a bit of useless trivia, Balnazzar was one of the random names given to Dreadlord heroes in Warcraft III.
i just soloed him and whole strat scarlet ,
Anonym 70 UD Warlock Talnivarr
Balnazzar is dead why does he live!!!! Blizzard fuckes the whole entire warcraft history !
I think really maybe Varimathras didn't kill him maybe he used somekind of spell that mayeb i don't know teleported him somewhere else or something like that because i don't think varimathras has guts to do that because he was so nervous when he wanted to do it even ner'zhul said that it's forbidded for dreadlord to slay dreadlord.
Solo'd as a 70 frost mage. ~9k health/mana in mostly pvp gear. Just barely got him down though. If I were a bit more organized it would have been better.
I just blasted his human form down with my water elemental out, then tanked or semi kited the demon form until my water elemental ran out of mana. Ice blocked, let the elemental die, cold snap'd a new elemental and continued. I had to use a health pot and bandaged.
To solo Bal with a BM Hunter:
1) Kill through to him how ever you want (Run and FD works sometimes). I chose to fight it.
2) Clear all around his room and the hallway
3) I say with a BM Hunter because you pet will be taking a lot of hits.
Set up a snake/fire trap (you're choice I chose snake) just inside the room. Mis-direct on your pet and pull him to the trap. Have you pet tank him near the doorway (inside a ways) and stand away in the back.
mend pet up all the time
because he will stun you to where you cant heal your pet and your pet might die.
Just before he turns into Bal; place a trap, mend your pet and serpent sting him.
Same thing with the first phase; keep mend up 100% (the sleep is much nastier than the stun) and place another trap and sting him,
2 times in a row he has slept me just before his death and my pet and serpent sting had to bring him down.
A Few notes:
-A turtle is an awesome pet for soloing low level instances with there high armor and shell shield ability. Any other high armor pet is fine as well.
-If you pet doesnt have at least 45% mitigation with 6k hp; prepare for a short fight for Balnazzar can hit and crit hard
-If you dont have at least 6000 mana; you may run out. You need to do all the dps you can within a short about of time. Steady shot is your best friend here.
Useful talents (You wont be able to get all of them)
Endurance Training (BM)
Thick Hide (BM)
Improved mend pet (BM)

The Beast Within (BM)
Go for the throat (Mark)

Improved Feign Death (Just in case :D) (Sur)
i have heard he is some how related to the act of the creation of corrupted ashbringer and the highwarlords morgaine's son stabbing his father
anyone got tips for a feral druid? Tried cat form, tank gear, didnt work well
He might fear you at least once throughout the fight, making you an easy target for his Shadow Shock which hurts even at Lv 70. The PvP trinket solves that problem. He also mind controls, but like Baroness Anastari and Kirtonos, won't use it when you're fighting him alone.
Possible, but definitely tough for a combat (19/42/0) specced rogue. Basically, this is what I found about the fight as a rogue:
Don't use any of your cooldowns while fighting Dathrohan. He's fairly easy to burn down, and will at most get you to 50-60%.
Balnazzar is the hard part. I blew all my cooldowns upon engaging him, attempting to burn him down ASAP.
Balnazzar crits for about 1300, so
is really important here. Hope to get a lucky streak with 4-5 dodges between each hit. It helps a lot.
Unlike other mobs in the instance, you won't automatically resist his Mind Blast 90% of the time (guessing it's because he's level 62 and thus green rather than grey to you). Therefore, it may be an idea to use
Cloak of Shadows
if you're near death and he begins casting at you.
Use everything you can; potions,
Charged Crystal Foci
, whatnot. I was at about 400 HP when I killed him.
(This is all as a rogue in mostly tier 5-level gear, with 1/8 tier 6 and a few random MH/BT items. I'm thinking it might be easier in PvP gear due to the more stamina and lesser chance of receiving crits.)
you can solo as a tank warrior but it will take you a very long time
Its recomended that you bring another person along that you know and split the loot since the drop rate for blues here is very high compared to other instances that drop BOE blues. Soloed all the bosses in the living side and killed bal within 2 minutes prob less
3 orbs dropped
5 BOE blues
and the tank warrior had D/E skill so we got some ok stuff all in all
It's simple... Varimathras didn't really kill Balnazzar, and is a traitor.
Guess blizzard thought that the twist in the storyline outweight the missing explanation for his death.
Blizzard is know for making great and complicated stories for their games... And I can't ever imagine they would make a mistake like that.
Here are my theories on the whole Balnazzar thing. First off, "Dreadlords aren't allowed to kill their own"? I was suspiscious of this when he first said it. Since when do Dreadlords follow ANY kind of rules? Varimathras likely made this crap up. He was supposed to kill him to prove his loyalty, and very well could have, yet he's still alive. As one poster mentioned, he may have allowed Bal to live, thus proving disloyalty to Sylvanas. It's sort of like Stormwind's Onyxia situation, where one force (Balnazzar and the Scarlet Crusade) is attacking from the outside, while another (Varimathras and the Deathstalkers) is subverting it from within. As for why Bal would be attacking the Scourge, it's not the Dreadlords who betrayed the Burning Legion, it was Ner'Zhul. The Dreadlords were the Legion's means of making sure Ner'Zhul did what they want, and he betrayed the Dreadlords, and thus the Legion, by commanding Arthas to kill Mal'Ganis when he first picked up Frostmourne.
One last note: Whatever reason Balnazaar survived, Varimathras undoubtedly knew. If he held any real loyalty, he would likely have told Sylvanas.
Balnazzar died..then he respawned lol
Food goes in the mouth.
Tell me. If balnazzar came back why didnt Dethoroc huh. I dont understand that. If Balnazar survived why not Dethoroc? Plz answer and i shall be happy =)
There is a book somewhere in the game that explains why Balnazaar is alive. I'm not giving the location away because, well, I really don't remember where i read it. But it explains everything you guys, (And the demonic roleplayer) are bickering over.
Just killed him with 4 people: Me (Druid), Warrior, Paladin and Rogue (All level 60s)
Now that was nice!
very easy boss, much easier than the baron, he doesn't even hit very hard, his health and toughness is also about average. He can be tricky for inexperienced groups though:
You NEED a good dps regimine on him to end the fight quickly, or else if the fight drags on he'll probably eventually start MCing people and fearing, which is where it will get really hairy, especially if he targets the healer when the party is running about like headless chickens
Provided the warrior (or whoever is tanking) holds the agro, has his pvp trinket equipped in case of a sleep, is spam healed by the main healer and the rest of the party don't accidentally pull the agro off him for too long, he will drop quite quickly
I belive Blanazzar and Varimathras thought up a plan before sylvannas attacked varimathras as they knew they could not defeat her:
phase 1: Varimathras submits himself before syvannas and offer her eternal loyality in exchange for his life.
phase 2: Let dethoric die at sylvannas hands.
phase3: After balnazzars army is defeated Varimathras pretends to kill belnazzar, balnazzar pretends to die.
phase 4: Balnazzar founds the scarlet crusade.
Lore wise, it's against the law of the dreadlords to kill each other. So when Lady Sylvannas told Varimathras to kill Balnazzar, it's unknown if Varimathras didn't kill Balnazzar accidentally or purposely.
It's pretty #$%^ed up though. Balnazzar sends his brother to tell Lady Sylvannas to join him, and finds out Sylvannas recruited him.
Since we handed his head to argent dawn.
maybe he just ressed at the spirit healer, and is weak cause he still has ressurection sickness? :P
I Like Demons and i Will post Pictures of Them)
"Sylvanas, Varimathras, and Garithos approached Balnazzar, and Sylvanas ordered Varimathras to kill his brother as a testament to his loyalty to her. Varimathras was abhorred. Killing another Nathrezim was forbidden, but Sylvanas was adamant. Balnazzar was sure that Varimathras would never take that final step. He was wrong. (Though we see Varimathras kill Balnazzar, we don't know if Balnazzar's survival was intentional or accidental)."
Edit: Bah, didnt see someone already posted this.
I have an idea.... ever met two people with the name John? Maybe Balnazzar is a popular name for dreadlords... like Chris... or Stephen.
I really wish the lightforge boots would drop... been there like 12 times now, and the epic book of the dead dropped already... funny how it's only a .3% drop and 10% for my boots. Makes me sad.
are u talking about. Where have u heard him been called that. I only have heard him as Balnazzar from WC 3 where he comes from
I JUST got done playin WCIII and the expansion today. Balnazzar does die at the hand of Varimathras, and even if he didnt completey kill him, why Stratholme? Why not go to OL?
this the brother of Varimathras and some other dreadlord
soloed as of 29/05/2007
Balnazzar is soloable at 70.
The reason why Balnazzar is still alive in the Strat run is so you can try to farm his items, come on its a RPG game not real life!
Brann Bronzebeard mispelled Balnazzar's name as Balzannar.
I thought balnazaar was dead...
Dropped him tonight and got Recipe: Flask of Distilled Wisdom... YAY
Is there some secret to this? Tried it in a 5 man group and we got our asses handed to us. He still had 63% or something.
And yeah I thought he was dead too.
Either Scarlet Strat is easy as hell, or the people I play with just rock...
60 Paladin (that's me, as main healer)
No mage, no rogue, no priest. Even with a horrid pull in the last half of the instance we didn't wipe once. Only people who died was Warlock a few times throughout, and 59 Paladin at Wiley cause he was healing me instead of himself :P
Anyway, Balnazzar wasn't really that tough, I imagine it would be even easier with Fear Ward/Tremor Totem. Just make sure the tank is always pulling him to one side of the room and everyone else is as far away as possible. His AoE stun has a 20 yard range.
If a warlock did Enslave Demon on this guys would'nt they become the new leader of the scarlet crusade with Balnazzar as their pet/slave?..
Of all mid-instance bosses, this must be the best one to farm money on. Apart from the chance to get Righteous Orbs on the way to him, he drops 2 BoE recipes/patterns which both sell for a lot of money, a reasonable chance for Book of the Dead (BoP though) and the rest of his loottable has a fair vendor price, for those who're not an enchanter.

I went with a group last night that consisted of 2 70's and a 68 and Balnazzar showed up as a 68 Elite!
lets just say wer weren't expecting that.
He must be an undead demon then.
Balnazzar looks so cool and is so easy!(ofc if u know what to do - casters should stay away from him and thats all)
He needs some buff in stamina or damage - he's probably the easiest 62 lvl mob.
Got right to his door, then the priest left, didn't say a word. I was pissed, I want demonshear bad too, seeing how its easier to do a Strat Live run, then try to farm rep with the circle.
hehe, sucks when he MCs the main tank with no priest. wiped an MC gear'd our group 5man. goes to show these bosses can still hold their own no matter what gear you've got.
It make's senses the scarlet crusade wasnt always evil if you did all the quests and scarlet dungeons(and the heros in SM armory) plus i doubt he would die so easily he will probaly be back and better then ever that i know
dropped truefaith pattern and both helms for my 6 man group, right after shadowcraft shoulders and devout gloves. would have been a perfect run if SC wasnt ninja'd by our hunter.
soloed as a feral druid 70 lvl
the guy is quite easy to kill
some shadow resistance equipment will help cause he casts Mindblast often - approx. 1500 shadow damage with no ShR equipped
(I was ok with ~140 ShR)
in the most cases I have no need to shapeshift for selfheal - improved leader of the pack ftw)
Where is this guy?
That MC sucks. Any way to get around that crap?
essential that the mt gets his whole attention. i stood in the door, healin from there - got no stuns. priest was inside the room, he got put to sleep etc - i dispelled and healed all the time.
he mindcontrolled our rogue, but the mage sheeped him :P
I tanked this guy in grays and red gear and we beat him, 5 man.
soloed today 29/05/2007
i hate this guy... effing lightforge boots never drop
no balazaar never died >_> even if he did the legion would bring him back as he is allready dead
Solo'd for teh flask recipe, got it 5th kill (lucky i guess) I was also trying for idol of brutality from that magist barth guy, killed him about 40 times still no idol
anyways hes easy as long as you have the cleft hide set. bfore he transforms, ( when the other guy has 50% health, barkskin and full heal, go back to bear and then ur set to go for balnzarr. Healing while fightin bal is not recomended as it nvr seems to go well.
Shadow resist gear is A nice + but not neaded (my resistance is 30) my frist fight I got very unlucky all his mind blasts hit and soem crited. since then 90% of his MB resist and i finsih the fight with 70% HP.
moral of the story is you run a risk of dying without and shadow resistance gear.
BTW I im far from having epic gear, all blues and one epic pvp mace. so just about any druid should be able to pull it off.
P.S most of his Mind blasts hit for around 1000-1500 and depending on his mood he casts them about one every 20seconds or so. Most will be resisted. I have seen him cast 3 or 4 back to back so you nvr know.
