Wowhead's 2016 Year in Review and Happy New Year
2016 for the Wowhead team was a big year with the launch of Legion and the Warcraft movie! Here's a look back at what we're particularly proud of.
The Wowhead's team focus in 2016 was all about Legion! With near-continuous beta and PTR updates on Blizzard's end, we looked at ways to further improve our datamining and PTR previews. We revamped our PTR Patch Note layout to better organize information by spec, started high-resolution previews for 3D models, and increased the size of our content team to ensure we had high-quality live and PTR coverage running at the same time. Popular site features that received major updates for Legion include Today in Broken Isles, the Pathfinder Tool, and custom WeakAuras for all class spells. We even beat Blizzard to launching a
World Quest Tracker
by a few days!
With the revamp of the Transmog System and Wardrobe, we launched several features related to transmog: a
wardrobe tracking tool
, popular transmog pairings on item and transmog set pages, and the
to save and share outfits. At the end of 2016, we have over 42,000 submitted transmog outfits!
We also polished some of our existing features to showcase them in better ways.
received a heavy permanent discount; it's now $1 a month for premium access. The
navigation bar on the top of every page
received a revamp so the drop-down menus were more compact and easier to browse. In addition, the navigation bar better showcases important content and tools on Wowhead, including class guides, raids, Mythic+, latest patch info, and transmog. Our Talent Calculator and Artifact Calculators now link back to guides discussing spec recommendations in more detail. And while not particularly flashy, we've been doing some housekeeping to make parts of the site run faster as well as improvements to our database URLs to make them sound more descriptive and user-friendly.
Finally, we launched
, which is a good place to ask the staff and guide authors questions, as well as the

movie was a unique moment for Wowhead--we handle BlizzCon every year but we've never worked with Hollywood before! Leading up to the Warcraft premiere, Wowhead partnered with Legendary to have two exclusive video reveals: the Stormwind Throne Room and Weapons Spotlight. We also attended the black-carpet premiere in Hollywood and interviewed the cast and crew on the press line.
Wowhead at BlizzCon
BlizzCon 2016 was a busy time for Wowhead with
major Patch 7.2 announcements
. Outside of the news, BlizzCon was a memorable year for Wowhead:
Blizzard included pins of Perc and Panser (art by
) in the official BlizzCon Season 3 Pin Series! These limited-edition pins were handed out at signing events every day at BlizzCon and included special pin details and packaging to mark their inclusion in the series.
The Wowhead party was back better than ever, with a brand-new afterparty on top of our usual party with games like a plushie claw machine, hundreds of prizes, and themed drinks! Huge thanks to our party host TradeChat and our sponsors Blizzard Gear, J!NX, ORIGIN PC, Method, and Wild Bangarang.
Our very own TradeChat hosted the WoW Q&A on the BlizzCon mainstage!
In 2016 we welcomed several great additions to our team of staff and contractors!
Ketsuki works as our guide coordinator and content assistant. Major projects of hers include setting up partnerships with FatbossTV for raid guides and Nobbel87 for lore articles. Most of her time is spent working with guide writers to ensure our spec guides are updated for the latest patches and hotfixes; this expansion was the first one Wowhead had detailed guides for all specs ready for the pre-patch.
Stiven joined the team initially focusing on high-resolution previews of 3D models. Since then he's expanded to work on many parts of the site, including regular PTR video coverage, cinematics, and guide details whenever a holiday hits Europe before the US!
Calligraphy and Nic joined our data team; the constant beta, PTR, and hotfix updates keep them busy around the clock! Their hard work powers all the tools on the site and makes it possible for the content team to write popular articles like the
7.1.5 Class Changes Notes
Our existing team stayed busy as well, including Erorus and Jerek on new features, Sas148 handling the feedback inbox and mod team, Serrinn liveblogging major Blizzard events, TradeChat hosting Wowhead Weekly, and Ashelia helping out with contests and merchandise when not busy on Lolking. Thank you also to the staff at ZAM who steps in as need be to assist with the site, whether it's Mark updating the site for new PTR models or the OPS team making sure Wowhead remained stable during Legion's launch.
I had a great time managing the team in 2016 and setting up all the projects discussed in this post! High points of 2016 included
being featured in the Blizzard Community Spotlight
, giving away pins in my image at BlizzCon 2016, and finding all sorts of cool data discoveries in the weekly Test Realm updates.
Wowhead would not be possible without the support of our users! The staff works hard to provide high-quality features and guides to inspire our users to share even cooler things.
Our guide writers, led by Ketsuki's guidance, have been regularly updating their
guides for all specs
. Have a question for them? Ask anyone in Wowhead's Discord with the "Guide Writer" rank.
