Illidan Stormrage, a nightelf, is the younger bother to Malfurion Stormrage. They both grew up together alongside their best friend Tyrande Whisperwind. Growing up Illidan struggled greatly with two things, finding his destiny and purpose as his brother and Tyrande had already, and his love for Tyrande as well. Illidan tried to follow his brother in learning the druidic ways but he did not have the patience for it and eventually he realized that the old ways of the nightelf were for him and followed the path of arcane magic.
One of the earliest events in Illidan's life that we see how the path of his destiny began to play out was during the
. Ten-thousand years in the past, the night elven capital city of Zin-Azshari was a magnificent, sparkling metropolis. Situated on the shores of the Well of Eternity, it was here that the aristocratic Highborne first opened a portal into the Twisting Nether and invited the Burning Legion to invade Azeroth. Under the command of the night elven queen, Azshara, they now pour their energies into the portal, preparing it for the terrifying and glorious entrance of the demon god Sargeras. Here you assist Illidan by defeating hordes of demons as they walk through the capital city and make your way to the Well of Eternity to thwart the efforts of Queen Azshara to open this portal. Your efforts were successful in stopping Sargeras, but during this campaign you learn a bit about Illidan as he begins to unleash more of his powers. After these events in the timeline we learn that later on after The Sundering that Illidan had seven vials of the Well of Eternity, three of which he used to create a new well at the top of Mount Hyjal, however he was found out and was imprisoned for his actions for ten thousand years.
During the Third War, Tyrande believed Illidan would be able to help and battled her way through the wardens in order to free him, however Malfurion still did not trust his reckless brother. Illidan swore to his brother, that despite everything, that the demons had no control over him and lead a small army of nightelves into Felwood. Later he encountered Arthas the death knight. Arthas had no qualms or reason to fight Illidan, he did not care and saw him more so as just someone in the way. They fought and were very evenly matched. Illidan, upset that they were so well matched, demanded to know why Arthas was even in Felwood to begin with, Arthas was cunning and explained that his reason was that he was searching for the Skull of Guldan, for it was an artifact that held immense power, and this is where Illidan's interest was piqued. Illidan always sought more power, he was thirsty for it. Illidan found the Skull, defeated countless demons, absorbed the power of the Skull and with his new found power, defeated the leader of the Dreadlords Tichondrius, but being an aid in winning this war, still wasn't enough. When Malfurion and Tyrande encountered Illidan again, he was a mix of nightelf and demon, disgusted, Malfurion banished Illidan, claiming he was no brother of his.
We later learned where Illidan went to with our venture into the Dark Portal. Illidan had been busy, forming allegiances with the naga as well as Kael'thas Sunstrider in Outland. In Outland he became a self-proclaimed lord and sought to rule all of Outland. He took up
as his castle and worked to train the Illidari, elven demon hunters, while pretending to be working with the Eredar Lord Kil'jaeden, who was keeping a watchful eye on Illidan and on Arthas who was at Northrend building up his empire. The Lich King had grown too strong and Kil'jaeden wanted Illidan to take him out. However he failed, and him, Lady Vashj, and Kael'thas went back to Outland. Beaten, Illidan began to use the demons more so that he could harness even more power. He eventually fell at the hands of adventures and Maiev at the top of
