How Bad Can Botting Get in Burning Crusade Classic?

Botting has always been a major issue in the MMO genre and will likely always be an issue. The gold botting can generate is just too valuable when compared to the risk of being banned. Especially in Classic World of Warcraft, where there is no game needed to purchase, it's just the subscription fee as the barrier of entry. A botter can pay $15 and farm thousands of dollars worth in gold before being "caught". That value far surpasses the risk, which is exactly why botting is such a big issue.
Botting in Classic
Botting in Classic has been there since day 1, if you were paying any attention. At first, it was Mages running back and forth between Stratholme and Light's Hope Chapel. A row of guildless, green geared, level 60 Mages all on follow, running between the two areas. Once inside the dungeon, they AOE farm down the trash packs and pick up Righteous Orbs, which you can find hundreds listed by these exact Mages. So, Blizzard acted.
Blizzard implemented a 30 instance lockout per 24 hours
, to curb this type of botting.
But the bots were smarter. A new type of botting cropped up, which Bean screenshots in the above tweet, Rogues in Blackrock Depths, spamming Pick Pocket on the mobs inside. What is interesting about Pick Pocketing, after enough time, the silver and items in the mob's pocket will
respawn
, meaning the Rogue bots never have to reset the instance, meaning Blizzard's 30 instance lockout didn't do much to stop these bots. Even worse, these Rogue bots are farming raw gold, meaning they don't even have to interact with the playerbase through the Auction House and have a steady, consistent amount of gold coming in. To increase the amount of gold, they just get more Rogue bots.
And lastly, the worst offenders, aren't just bots, but they're
bots with hacks
.
In a Reddit post from 8 months ago
, where the technology was shown off in a youtube video (now set to private), players witnessed a character teleporting across zones, flying underground picking Black Lotus, and robbing actual players the opportunity at these resources. You can still see the video in an
Asmongold reacts video
, because of course Asmongold reacted to it. I have personally seen people fly hacking inside dungeons (which is the safest place to do it, as there aren't players nearby to report this type of activity). If you've ever wondered why there were level 60 bots running in and out of Zul'Gurub constantly for hours, they are fly hacking to pick herbs inside the dungeon.
Here is another perfect example of botting and fly hacking. Here, players on Atiesh are using the fly hacks to get level 1 characters to a nearby graveyard where they can farm honorable kills. Clearly, this fly hacking and botting is being used for bracket expansion, a fairly common strategy players have been using since the Honor PvP System was implemented in Classic, to make it easier for players to rank.
Blizzard even planned on changing this and putting a stop to it
, but the community pushed back against it, and Blizzard decided not to do anything about it.
With Burning Crusade Classic on the horizon, the question remaining is... What will these bots be farming in Burning Crusade? Will this issue persist? Does it get worse?
Botting in The Burning Crusade
Druids with Gathering Professions
Everyone is aware how good Druids are with Herbalism, thanks to their instant cast Flight Form and being able to use Gather Herbs while in Flight Form. How likely this will be a Botting avenue is yet to be determined, and generally open world botting isn't that common (because of the risk of being reported and eventually banned), but with flying, this changes a bit. Bots can fly high in the air, away from prying eyes while they wait on flowers to respawn or scope out the zone for herbs to pick.
Rogues and Druids Stealth Mining in Dungeons
If a botter is afraid of botting in the open world, they certainly have the option of Stealthing through dungeons in an attempt to mine mineral nodes. Many dungeons in Burning Crusade have multiple mining nodes readily available in the dungeon, without the need of clearing it. Looking back on Dire Maul, it was actually so ahead of its time, requiring the final boss to be killed before revealing the Rich Thorium Veins.
Rogues Stealthing through Dungeons for Chests
While this video is quite a blast from the past,
Blizzard did eventually nerf Mechanar in Patch 2.2.0
, removing all Chest spawns from the dungeon, because it was too easy for Rogues to solo farm Chests from here. But that doesn't change much. If you played on Private Servers,
you might know about this Chest farming method
, that requires two Rogues to pull off. Two Rogues enter Steamvaults and while 1 Rogue pulls a pack of mobs away from a chest, the other Rogue Lock picks it. Once picked, the original Rogue casts Vanish, resetting the pack of enemies. Repeat this for every Chest in the dungeon.
Two Rogue Bots doing this on repeat, all day long would net hundreds of times more value than Blackrock Depth pick pocketing ever did. If Blizzard doesn't do something about Chests spawning in Dungeons, prepare to see many, many Rogue bot duos in dungeons.
Protection Paladins Farming Demon Hunters outside Black Temple
Outside of the Black Temple is a large group of Demon Hunter Initiates training. Protection Paladins can AOE pull these mobs and kill them down with a few cooldowns and Consecration. These mobs drop Arcane Tome, Sunfury Signet, Potions, Green gear, and plenty of valuable items. On large population servers, this entire area will likely be on farm 24/7, but on low population servers, you might find a bot free farming this area. With server transfers existing, what is there to stop a bot from farming this area and "muling" over the items to a different server, where they can make a larger profit?
Fishermen Fishing up Primal Waters in Nagrand
Fishing Bots are already a massive problem in Classic WoW, usually going after Blackmouth Oil, which are used to craft Free Action Potions and eventually sold on the Auction House. In The Burning Crusade, this problem will become much worse, and many more Fishing Bots will be in Nagrand, attempting to fish up Primal Waters from the pools that spawn. And you can guarantee there will be many players fish botting in Terokkar Forest for Highland Mixed Schools, trying to go after Mr. Pinchy!
Any class killing Elementals for Primals or using Zapthrottle Mote Extractor
Instead of fishing up Primal Waters, any class can realistically just kill Elementals in Nagrand or use a Zapthrottle Mote Extractor anywhere in Outland to farm Primals. While this is not likely to become a super common method of botting, it is definitely an option for botters. The reason it most likely won't become the go-to method, is there isn't a condensed enough resource to farm, it requires a lot of traveling and down time, which isn't desirable for botters.
Botting Azeroth even in The Burning Crusade
And lastly, something worth mentioning, there really isn't any reason all the current bots in Classic WoW can't keep doing what they're doing in The Burning Crusade Classic. At the end of the day, pick pocketing in Blackrock Depths might not be a lot of gold, but it's still an option to botters even in The Burning Crusade.
What Should Blizzard do about it?
So really, it comes down to this simple question. What should Blizzard do about it? Should Blizzard just work on cracking down on bots? But that will likely require more Customer Service employees. Should Blizzard solely rely on player reports? But what about bots that are doing it inside instances? If you really want to put on a tin foil hat, maybe Blizzard
doesn't want to solve the botting issue
. Maybe, just maybe, Blizzard wants the bots to continue to be an issue, so eventually, the community starts to think WoW Tokens might be a good idea... Oh, no.
