Imagine shatter bombing with this!
Frost Nova -> Frostbolt + double Ice lance, use pet's frost nova if yours breaks...
You think the crit chance on this is increased by +spell crit? Cos then it really is amazing for shatter :P

Just got this tonight, and when spamming scorch and fireblast, it's the same as having about 3 points in Ignite. Because a scorch crit will give me about 600 in ignite damage against a debuffed mob, and each crit adds around 300-330 from the lightning bolt.
Retardedly good for aoe'ing because each crit will give you a charge, so all you have to do is target the big bad elite in the aoe pull to have some extra burst against that guy.

- Can crit
- Is not affected by +spell damage
- Is affected by debuffs on mobs (Misery, etc ...)
- Works off AoE
- Proc doesn't need you to face your target
- Molten armor can proc it

Apparently a chain-lightning triple-crit will cause the to proc on your currently selected target and it is affected by all shaman lightning bolt talents, including lightning only chance to crit.

The trinket is pretty useful for the actual illhoof fight if you have a lock or mage aoe tanking the adds. Especially as a arcane mage mana being regained with resists spamming rank 4 or 5 AE you get tons of procs off the trinket and never run out of mana. Just make sure you have appropriate FR gear.

Also know that the Electrical Charge buff persists through log-out(don't think it does through death though). But it's nice to log on and still see the charges still there. And the charges still stay on you if you switch trinkets around. Or deequip it.

It is not effected by +spelldamage, but is it effected by talents such as Vengence, which makes the damage of a spell crit double too 100%, rather then the usual 50%?
I'm a Balance druid. If I get a crit with this thing, will it crit for 1 K'ish or 1.4 K'ish?

But i doubt very much it would work for a rogue / gief for my MAge ftw / good for shammys also, but definetely shouldnt go to a warlock that would be a insane waste

35% Crit (Shaman)
Assumption: Crit Chance is affected by your chance to crit with spells. See: Nara's post.
Average damage for a Lightning Capacitor crit:
( ( 694 * 1.65 ) + ( 694 * 1.35 ) ) / 2 = 1041 Average Base Damage.
( ( 806 * 1.65 ) + ( 806 * 1.35 ) ) / 2 = 1209 Average Max Damage.
(1209 + 1041 ) / 2 = 1125 Average Damage.
35 / 100 = .35.
We need 1.00 to generate a Lightning Charge.
1.00 / .35 = 2.857
So, approx. every 2.857 spells I cast will generate one Lightning Charge.
Need 3.00 Lightning Charges for 1.00 Lightning Bolt.
2.857 * 3.00 = 8.571 spells for 1.00 Lightning Bolt.
1.00 Lightning Bolt = 1125 Average Damage.
8.571 spells = 1125 Average Damage.
(1125 / 8.571 ) = 131.256.
In the upcoming 2.1 patch, if Lightning Capacitor is affected by your +spell crit, it will effectively be a passive +131.256 Spell Damage trinket if you have 35% to crit.
Better learn how to kill those chains.

This item is not terribly useful yet since it's not affected by +dmg gear.
I cannot see giving up a +dmg or +crit trinket until this uses my +spell dmg, since this waits for a crit and +dmg +crit are there every cast.
Edit: Upon reading other's notes, as a Warlock, this would be really fun when using Seeds.

OMG this is is INSANE ...... I got it on my elemental shaman who has 39 % spell crit and just WOW
It shares the Spell crit you have on the trinket so it crits on 39 % of the procs because IT IS CONSIDERED A LIGHTNING BOLT SPELL
Clearly it was intended as an elemental shaman trinket hands down since like Palidans we need spell crit to keep our mana up and add this to the mix and you have another lighting bolt every 3 crits
SIDE NOTE .... it procs off of Flame tongue and frostbrand so more reason for shamans to stab with our fast daggers (those weapon attacks also share ur spell crit so GG) Now if only shaffars horn would drop :-(

I'd say that this trinket is definitely meant for elemental shamans. No other dps class comes close in terms of crit chance. Close to 40% chance to crit with lightning spells is to be considered normal on a well geared raiding shaman, without gimping other stats. With almost every other bolt critting, the dps increase thanks to this trinket is substantial.
评论来自

Tarrek: You're not going to see near as many procs even with that 40% crit rate as a mage would. Anyway lots of classes can benefit greatly from this trinket!
After getting this trinket i promptly respecced to 33/28/0, took my 36% crit scorch build and had some fun.
==>PvP:
Combined with molten armor, this trinket will proc very quickly on rogues and druids - in one rogue duel I was lagging and was slow to blink, and the rogue was at ~2/3 health by the time i blinked.
This trinket procs like mad in pvp situations where you are AE'ing more than a few targets. This gives you some extra burst damage that is more difficult to heal through.
Finally, critting someone who is running away and almost dead and watching a tiny lightning bolt chase them down and kill them is quite satisfying.
==> PvE
I did a Karazhan raid as 33/28/0 (had no imp fireball, just used scorch/FB). Expecting to place somewhat low on the damage meters (due to previous experience with scorch builds) I actually managed to be just shy of #1 dps with the procs from the trinket making up 6.5% of my total damage.
==>Important notes
The tooltip is inaccurate. When AE'ing mobs, although the trinket is capable of procing multiple times off one spell (I've seen two procs off one AE), it won't zap the mob/player you have targetted, it will zap one of the mob/players who was crit (3rd one, I believe).
If your 3rd crit is a killing blow, the proc is wasted. :-(

Get off your high horses, stop making thottbot-ish priowars especially when you're way off.
15 sec span factoring in 100 ms lag.
1 x immolate
5 x Incinerate
1 x Conflagrate
7 spells / 33% crit = 2,31 spellcrits
Avg trinket dmg per crit= 332,5
2,31 spellcrits x 332,5 avg trinket dmg = 768,075
768,075 dmg / 15 seconds = 51,205 dps or the equivelant of having ~100-120 extra spelldamage.
Furthermore, this thing is pure golden for destro warlock pvp and grinding. Searing pain has(just like mages Scorch) +10% crit from talents and thusly is a BEAST with this trinket, I also use shadowfury a lot which hits n crits several targets. All in all, saying this trinket is worthless for a destruction warlock and that we should be lowprioed, is pure BS. Mages, Balance druids, Elemental shamans and DD spell spamming warlocks ALL benefit greatly from this trinket, and all should be given a fair shot at it.

Since it sounds like the Lightning Bolts from this trinket are affected by shaman talents for Lightning spells (Lightning Overload, Clearcasting, Call of Thunder, etc), this trink should go to an elemental shaman first and foremost.
In AoE fights, it would be great for a mage. However 99% of boss fights (the only fights that matter) do not use AoE.

I'm a Holy Paladin and I just got my hands on this snazzy item. I'm going to be testing it out and see if it makes my grinding life any easier. I will also be trying this out on a Retribution Paladin, but even then, unless I'm fighting an undead it's probably not worth it (since you'd have to crit 3 judgments and those 3 judgments will take a total of 24 seconds to occur). Although, I'm not sure if righteousness Crits would count either, since they have the SD calculated into them if I remember correctly.
So... in short, this will be an interesting experiment. Keep your eyes peeled on my blog for other details: sealofblood.scvs4hire.com

Got one of these and I'm very very happy with the dps boost it provides...
I'm a raid specced (41/0/20) Elemental Shaman, my primary damage spell is a 2 second cast with a 5% chance for a double cast (Lighting Overload) I have 35% crit on lightning with AI but no oils/alchemy buffs...
This trinket is really quite rediculous... in any one trash pull I'll have about 5 procs from this trinket... (I often spam one or two R1 LB's while the tank gets a little bit of extra agro, I like to start on a clearcast)
The biggest issue I have with this trinket is threat on trash... It fires after a crit, which is always a bump up on the agro... with an extra 700 damage tacked on, (1050 crit, also 35% chance)
It's taking a little bit of getting used too... and with no agro dump "just in case" it could pose a problem... none of the agro reduction trinkets provide any significant amount.
Confirming what has also been confirmed and re-confirmed...
It does NOT proc Lighting Overload off the Trinket Proc
It does NOT proc Clearcasting if it crits
It does NOT get a 100% crit damage bonus from Elemental Fury
It DOES get +11% spell crit from Shaman lighting talents.
It DOES gain charges from the second and third jumps from Chain Lighting
It fires at the last person to be crit, Starting with no charges, a 3 target EM/CL will proc the trinket onto the last person in the chain...
If you already had 2 charges and EM/CL onto 3 targets, the first will take the bolt and you'll instantly gain 2 more charges ready to go... It works very nicely this way...
It's hard for me to track how much damage the proc is actually doing... as it is a "Lighting Bolt" and appears on all mods mixed in with my regular data...
PS. Those giggling at the "slow moving bolt"
It's a lot of fun... I've had at times 1 bolt hitting a boss, 1 leaving my hands and 2 mid air... it looks very cool when you get some LO's and TLC's proc together... Lightning Windfury ftw!

I got this just a few minutes ago as an arcane mage. Basically what I want to know is how does the lightning bolt work against raid bosses, +hit wise? Does it ignore hit rating and does it ever resist? Does it just get the barebone +hit rating from your gear unless you are a shaman, or do other +hit talents of different classes and magic schools influence the hitchance as well?

I am assuming down-ranking doesn't hinder ththe ability to stack charges.
It doesn't seem like this would increase DPS but in a situation where you have two charges and your mana is either gone or being consered I would readily fire off a Rank 1 Moonfire to complete the stacking and release the bolt.
I have not gotten the trinket yet but would love to have this confirmed or corrected. An instant cast with a 37% chance to crit that costs 25 mana and a global cooldown able to proc a lightning bolt that deals 700ish damage sounds great and I can see gambling on a crit simply for this in quite a few situations.

I think this has been noted before, but this is one of if not the best trinket for arcane mages (i'm currently 61/0/0, contrary to popular belief with some of the worst gear in the kara raids im usually top one-two, sometimes by quite a bit, and in 5 mans 90% of the time im top, anyways) I usually use AM very rarely use AB or anything else due to the significant amount of dps i lose with AB so it's basically a 1 sec attack speed, with a ~25% crit rate that's almost one proc per 12 sec, or ~62.5 dps, and as an added bonus in comparison to other on-use trinkets it is a steady amount of damage that doesn't require you to activate it.
IMO, arcane mage first (due to am), fire mage second (due to high crit from talents), and after that doesn't matter that much, close third is elem shaman, and then anyone else its not that good for them

One additional bit of useful information for those Deep Fire Mages 10/48/3 this is perfect for endurance fights.
Normally towards the end of the fight when i've potted, gemmed, blown evocation and just waiting for next gem to pop, I'll switch to lower ranked Scorch and spam that until I clearcast, then Fireball/Arcane Missiles.
With this trinket equipped, it allows you to cast lower ranked cheap scorches (48% to crit with scorch on my build with Moonkin aura, raid buffs) to proc clear casts for that Fireball/Arcane Missile barrage without sacrificing too much DPS.
Every 2 clear casts (20 casts total) I would have crit 9-11 times, meaning an additional 3 lightning bolts.
20 x Scorch 1.5sec cast = 30sec
2 x Fireball 3.0sec cast = 6 sec
Avg L.Cap dmg per bolt = 750dmg
Total L.cap dmg for 36sec = 2150dmg
Or additional 59.7 dmg per sec just by saving mana using down ranked scorches.
This is assuming Lightning bolts don't crit (30% on my char, nature crit chance) and don't miss (only have +11% hit with non-fire) and not affected by lag.
This is very very very nice for any crit-based casting class, of which the highest +crit% to glean the most benefit will most likely be your friendly neighbourhood Fire mage, Arcane/Fire mage, or Elemental Shammy.
note: Does not gain charges from Wanding crits.

This trinket is hands down the best Elemental shammy raiding trinket in the game.
While the trinket gains no benifit from spelldamage gear it does gain benifit from our talents. This includes concusion and the + crit for lightning bolts.
Lets say you have decent gear and can reach 33% crit with your lightning bolt spells fully buffed. (that is pretty easy with consumables/oils and elixers). You can cast 8 spells within a 15 second span ( 2 CL and 6 LB ). With the 4 extra hits from CL thats a total of 12 hits you have a chance to crit on. Thats an average of 4 crits with spells every 15 seconds (this doesnt include lightning overload or Elemental mastery to keep it simple). Now this trinket does 694-806 dmg which averages out to 750 on each hit and 1125 on crits . Now add in the 5% gained from and it changes to 728.7-846.3 which averages out to 787.5 dmg per hit and 1181.25 on crits. The trinket can crit based on you spell crit percentage plus it gains all your talents for +crit to Lightning Bolts. So it crits 33% of the time as well this gives its overal average dmg of 918.75 every hit. (785.5+785.5+1181.25=2756.25/3) Now if you get 4 crits every 15 seconds thats 1.33 charges going off every 15 seconds for an average of 918.75 and that translates to 79.65 DPS increase.
Gaining almost 80 DPS from a single trinket is huge now factor in elemental mastery and lightning overload and it goes up pretty quickly.
If you get the chance to grab this trinket, DO SO.
Thats +160 dmg on every LB and up to +360 dmg for CL.

I can't believe I missed noticing this trinket until now. This is daft good for an elemental shammy. Point is that when kitted out with decent epics and buffed in raids, shammies' crit chance can go as high as 43-48% (moonkin aura ftw) :) Now when's my guild's next Kara run?

For mages, and any other class that uses a single target, direct damage spell as their primary nuke, my calculations result in the following formula for calculating the +dmg necessary for an equivalent trinket:
let:
C = the crit rate for your nuke spell (e.g. 30% => 0.3)
B = the crit bonus for your nuke spell (e.g. 100% => 1.0)
C = the crit rate affecting the lightning bolt
B = the crit bonus for the lightning bolt (usually 50% => 0.5)
D = damage modifier from talents for your nuke (e.g. 6% from piercing ice => 1.06)
F = the spell damage coefficient of your nuke
+dmg = 250*C*(1+B*C)/(D*F*(1+B*C))
Some examples:
Lets say you're a mage with gear giving you a 27% base crit rate to all spells.
If you were 40/0/21 and spamming frostbolts, your overall crit would be 30% (base +3% from arcane instability). Your variables would be:
C = C = 0.3
B = 0.5 + 0.5 (ice shards) + 0.25 (spell power) = 1.25
B = 0.5
D = 1.09 (+3% arcane instability and +6% piercing ice)
F = 3/3.5 - 0.1 (nerf tax) - 0.05 (snare reduction) = 0.707
This trinket would be equal to one having:
250*0.3*(1+0.5*0.3)/(1.09*0.707*(1+1.25*0.3)) = +81 dmg
If you were 10/48/3 and spamming fireball, with someone keeping the improved scorch debuff up, your fireball crit rate would be 36% (base +6% from critical mass and 3% from pyromaniac).
C = 0.36
C = 0.27
B = 0.5 + 1.5*0.4 (ignite) = 1.1
B = 0.5
D = 1.13 (+3% playing with fire and +10% fire power) * 1.15 (+15% improved scorch debuff) = 1.30
F = 3.5/3.5 - 0.10 (nerf tax) + 0.15 (empowered fireball) = 1.05
250*0.36*(1+0.5*0.27)/(1.30*1.05*(1+1.1*0.36)) = +54 dmg
If you were 10/48/3 with incineration and spamming scorch, your scorch crit rate would be 40% (base +4% from incineration and 9% from the talents mentioned above).
C = 0.40
C = 0.27
B = 1.1
B = 0.5
D = 1.30
F = 1.5/3.5 = 0.429.
250*0.4*(1+0.5*0.27)/(1.30*0.429*(1+1.1*0.4)) = +141 dmg
For reference, if you use the "On Use" ability of
https://www.wowhead.com/tbc/item=29370
every time it's off cooldown, it's equivalent to a passive trinket having 43 + 155*20/120 = +69 dmg.
Hope that helps in your itemization.

Raiding ele shamans also often top 40% spell crit, simply because we gain 11% from talents (and another 3% from ToW, if we're clever and take it for raiding;))
Really, I think it's equally good for both.

This drops off Illhoof, an encounter which requires a Warlock spamming Seed of Corruption on Illhoof to kill all of the imps in the room. It sure would make sense for this trinket to go to a Warlock and s/he will be able to do some dps to Illhoof on this fight. Good for locks in other situations as well, spamming searing pain, or just regular casting, it is still an awesome choice for locks. Huge benefit to Shammys, Mages, and other casters as well :)

The nerf on this thing in 2.3 hurts me as a warlock. During the Illhoof fight for instance, I'll spam SoC on illhoof, which hits all his imps, pretty much guaranteed to get at least three crits from that... The lightning blot then hits one of them (I've not worked out how it decides which one it should hit, it certainly doesn't go for the target the aoe spell was cast at any more than any other target.) - I'm not certain, but I think it's capped at a maximum of 3 charges for one spell cast at the moment, pretty sure there are times when I've had more than 6 crits using SoC (2 pulls of skellies in SL for instance) and I haven't noticed more than one lightning bolt proc, or any extra charges after a lightning bolt, I haven't searched through my combat logs or anything, but that's just what I've noticed from playing with it for a while now.
Aside from the difference in how good this is for aoe, so long as you are casting 2.5 second spells (imp SB for instance) it shouldn't make much difference. Unfortunately (well not really unfortunately) I have Quagmirran's Eye, which reduces the speed of my SB's so that during the buff time on the eye (you can get 3 hasted SB's when it procs) I'll only have a chance at getting 2 charges rather than three...
And forget spamming 1.5 second casts.... They really have killed this item for many classes and builds. Still useable... but there are plenty of other "useable" and non "must have" items out there.

It has been confirmed on EJ boards that in patch 2.3, the 2.5 second cooldown is applied only after the lightning bolt shoots off. Thus, you cannot acquire the first of three charges until 2.5 seconds have gone after shooting the Lightning bolt. I believe that it noted that there is no cooldown on acquiring the charges as testing with chain lightning with multiple crits has added multiple charges.

I just got this trinket as a frost mage, post nerf. And all I have to say is, it procs off shatter combos. (Frostbolt+icelance on a frozen target, double crit). My theory would be that it's not when the crits occur it's how long the previous cast was. For example, my frostbolt takes 2.5s to cast, my Ice Lance is instant, they hit the target at the exact same time(therefore both the spells get the shatter bonus and crit) and it adds 2 Lightning Charges, and I think it's because the cast time of frostbolt is 2.5s.
Needless to say, this trinket rocks my boat in pvp.

The nerf that this trinket received in 2.3 does not prevent you from acquiring additional charges upon the buff in rapid succession, it prevents you from getting the *buff* itself rapidly.
Examples:
You have one charge and AoE for 4 crits. You will get two charges and fire a bolt.
You have one charge and chaincast fireball (3s cast) and get 4 crits in a row. You will get two charges, fire a bolt, reacquire the buff and get a second charge on the new buff.

TLC is an EXCELLENT trinket, most especially for elemental shaman. I know there are people who rank it 2nd or 3rd behind hex shrunked head or guldan's skull.. but that's just wrong. ESPECIALLY if you are hit-capped (skull) which is very easy as an ele.
Here's why: (the following write up is for an elemental shaman)
TLC is worth a STATIC +168 dmg assuming a pretty standard raid-buffed crit rating on your LB/CL of 40%
You heard me, it's worth +168 dmg. Here's the math:
TLC discharge dmg = 694-805 --> avg non-crit discharge = 750
TLC discharge crit multiplier = 1.5x --> avg crit (40% frequency) = 1125.
Assuming a crit rate of 40%, which TLC gets in this scenario --> avg TLC bolt dmg = 900.
^^ That is, 60% non crit @ 750dmg per and 40% crit @1125 dmg = 900dmg on avg overall per discharge.
At 40% crit rate, it will take an average of 7.5 casts to discharge the trinket.
So, since, we know that it takes an avg of 7.5 casts to discharge a bolt doing an avg of 900 dmg, we are getting 900dmg/7.5casts with this trinket @40% crit rate.
That is 900dmg/7.5casts = 120dmg per cast.
However, we also know that LB's co-efficient is 71.4%
Solving simply for this, we get that 1/.714 = ~1.400x
So, 120dmg x 1.400 = 168 damage.
Yeah, that's the equivalent +dmg that TLC gives NOT EVEN calculating in the procs of LO, NOR the ability for CL to multi-charge the trinket. Considering those (much more complex math) the benefits are even greater...
In sum, TLC >>>> all other trinkets for ele shammies. And it gets better with your crit.
Have a nice day! :-)

For a warlock if you crit multiple times with seed of corruption does
it fire a bolt at every target (that you just crit on)
or just the target you have selected? or the first target you crit with?

I've wanted this trinket for over a year now. As a PvP frost mage this would come in handy. Just consider Shatter! I can get a crit off like every 2-3 seconds, so it would greatly increase my damage and burst, which in turn helps nuking down targets.
However, seeing as this trinket is good for so many classes (shamans more than others I guess) it has proven to be extremely difficult to get my hands on.
Also, I'm not even sure if it's worth replacing my Battlemaster trinket for.. Any ideas?

The wording as of 2.3 is very inaccurate. You can still gain charges as fast as your crits come, but after it procs an actual lightning bolt you cannot gain charges for 2.5 seconds.
I.E. you can crit on 2 lightning bolts in a row, and one of those bolt's lightning overloads and you will get three charges, but if your next lightning bolt crit you would not recive a charge.
This Trinket adds around 100 dps for an elemental shaman with 40% crit.

Do not forget: Patch 2.4:
Item Cast Spells: Many spells cast by items were being cast as if the caster were the same level as the item. Most of those will now be cast at the player’s level, giving them a reasonable chance to miss, be dispelled, or be resisted.
It MIGHT mean that this item will get so many resists it does not worth it anymore for an Elemental Shaman who gets most of his hit from talents, which do not effect items. More testing is needed, nothing is confirmed from the above, just keep these in mind.

I just picked this up as a lolSmite priest. Before anyone flames me, the dps had better stuff. I've been trying to do the math based on the formulas above, and was hoping someone might be able to help fill in the missing stuff. I also realize that a lolsmiter is heavily gear based for crit as we only get the 5% from Holy Spec and possibly 5% from Force of Will. So I'm filling in the crit based on my personal gear.
C = C = 26.9%
B = 100%
B = 50%
D = 115% (Searing Light + Force of Will)
F = the spell damage coefficient of your nuke (crunching fails me here...)
+dmg = 250*C*(1+B*C)/(D*F*(1+B*C))
This gives me
250*.27*(1+.5*.27)/(1.15* F *(1+1*.27) = + dmg
I'm a bit confused trying to figure out Priest dmg coefficient. Other than that if anyone can point out errors, or fill in numbers, I'd like to see how this works out. I also realize I probably have not figured in the 2.5 sec limit, which really isn't a factor unless I'm spamming Holy Nova (lol), as I think the fastest I could stack it would be Holy Fire/Smite, Mind Blast, SW:D.
I messed around w/ my build and discovered that this will proc off Reflective Shield crits (rather humerous to see).

EDIT 2: I've just found
WoWDB
and suggest you consult it for a thorough thesis on this trinket that is far beyond anything i have mentioned. (Enjoy!)
I'd like to make a few confirmations as listed in many posts below.
To start with, this trinket is DEFINITELY worth any and all the effort that you put into getting, even the post v2.3 version.
I'm a frost mage built 17/0/44 with >33% crit rate and benefit emensely from the trinket. Torkan is correct, 'It is "way too crazy!"' Let me explain.
The Lightning Capacitor is a static raid drop from Terestian Illhoof (Karazhan) as listed above.
Titenia is correct, the v2.3.2 in-game tooltip reads:
The Lightning Capacitor
Binds when picked up
Unique
Trinket
Requires Level 70
Equip: You gain an Electrical Charge each time you cause a damaging spell critical strike. When you reach 3 Electrical Charges, they will release, firing a Lightning Bolt at your current target for 694 to 806 damage. Electrical Charges cannot be gained more often than once every 2.5sec.
BlueScrn is correct in stating you get a buff, 'electrical charge' each time you crit with a spell. I cannot comment on whether it procs from pallie's or enhancement shaman's abilities. There is no cooldown on this buff. It will remain on you indefinitely (unless you die), the buff is retained even with logging and zoning. I'm not sure if it can be spell-stolen or dispelled (have yet to try). I would like to add that the buff remains even after you remove the trinket! I've been farming with the trinket equipped and had two charges buffed on me. Then swapped it for my
Riding Crop
and did not lose the charges - how awesome!
Torkan is correct in stating the trinket procs off Molten Armour crits.
The Lightning Bolt itself can crit (i don't believe it benefits from +spell damage) and appears to crit at about 20%-ish. My highest crit as been 1300ish.
In response to Dumkid's question, I have not had the lightning bolts fire simultaneously as you only gain a maximum of 3 charges. I would like to point out that the trinket tooltip states, 'Electrical Charges cannot be gained more often than 2.5sec' but i DEFINITELY have had lightning bolts fire way faster than 2.5 sec, even post v2.3.2. When i do an AOE roundup, i may have 15 targets at one time spamming arcane explosion. I often have the trinket firing lightning bolts faster than i can see the charges accummulate on my inferface. Sometimes i see one charge and then it fires and then fires again.
To address Fragma's question, if you have no target selected when you reach 3 charges (say you crit on the killing blow) the lightning bolt fires at the dead target. If you don't have a target selected when you gain 3 charges, all the charges are lost. If you're being struck and taking damage while aoe-ing, the next target that strikes you is auto-selected, so you can happily aoe with lightning bolts constantly flying.
I would have to disagree with Bavra's comment that this trinket is obsolete, on the very contrary, most useful in the hands of an arcane mage. I have personally had two lightning bolts fire in a single arcane missile channel against a frozen target.
So definitely and absolutely 'way too crazy' trinket worth every mage's attention.
EDIT: The lightning bolt that is fired once 3 charges are gained does NOT cause a global cooldown and does not interrupt a channelled spell (Arcane missiles). The fired bolt is not affected by Line-Of-Sight issues (you don't need to face the target AND it will fire through walls Edited, Jan 21st 2008 7:22am by Maszakarn

If you crit with spells, this trinket is good for you. No shammies, druids, mages, locks, priests get special dibbs on this trinket because it doesn't have any "Class:?" tags on it. Obviously this would be better for any class with a hit crit chance and low casting time. Overall The only 2 perfect set ups I see for this trinket are:
A mage with Combustion (Spell that increases fire crit chance UNTILL you get 3 crits, HELLO 3 crits procs trinket so there for, Combustion procs the trinket GG, Gives the trinket a guarenteed proc every 3 minutes)
A Shammy with Lightning Overload has the chance to cast an additional spell on the target when shooting a lightning spell. Which in turn has a chance to double crit. But still, depends on high crit chance for it to be very beneficial over time (rather than just having a dmg trinket with a low cooldown)

Moonkin druids can actaully get some really sweet usage off this. With wrath spam your critting around 25% of the time at very fast casting time and then about 30-35% chance with moonfires. So in reality a moonkin druid would be procing this thing nonstop.

I was wondering if the damage done when the charges go off are linked to the players bonus spell damage? And if so, what is the % it gets?
评论来自
Thottbot
There are only Moonkins and Scorchmages that really use a spell which can crit every 1,5 sec.
So one of these should get it in my opinion, and since scorch mages usually have a high amount of crit (my mage hast ~36% with blue gear+ spellfire set), they MAY be prefered for raid usage of the trinket.
Plus the Area effects ;)

-dunno about DOTs or AOE
dunno if patch will change things.

Yes Frost mages have the potential for a higher critrate applied to each spellcast. However their cast time is 66% longer than that of a scorch mage and thus would cast and crit fewer times within a given period of time.
Using molten armor and average karazhan level gear, you would have roughly a 23% critrate, plus 5% from empowered frostbolt and 10% from winter's chill when fully stacked. That comes to a total of 38% chance to crit with frostbolt.
My arcane/fire scorch build gives me 3% to all spells via arcane instability, 6% to fire via critical mass, and 4% to scorch and fireblast through incineration. These values total 36%. This is 2% lower than the frostbolt when compared spellcast by spellcast, however, taking out of the equation lag and other issues, a scorch mage will cast roughly 66% more times than a frost specced mage.
For the sake of simplicity, again, I am not accounting for lag, lack of mana, arcane potency/clearcasting crits or resists. So in an average 5 minute boss fight, the frostmage will cast 120 frostbolts critting 46 times, and releasing 15 lightning bolts for an adition of roughly 10,500 damage from the capacitor. In this same 5 minute fight however the scorch mage will cast 200 scorches, 72 of which will crit and fire off 24 lightning bolts adding 16,800 damage over the course of the fight.
So for a frost mage to benefit from this trinket more than a scorch mage, the scorch mage would have to be running with a 26% critrate or lower. Obviously a scorch mage gains more from this particular trinket, however regardless of your class/spec, this little number is a welcome addition to any high crit caster's arsenal.

First and foremost, the thott entry is currently wrong; the damage on this got buffed along with all other epic items in 2.1. It's now 694-806 damage.
Got this last night on my elemental shaman. I'd been wanting it more than any other item in the entire game, and I've not been disappointed. I've since been doing some test to see what triggers it, how the buff works, how talents work with it, etc. Here's what I've found.
First, the bad. What
doesn't
trigger it:
lightning shield (it doesn't crit)
flame shock tics (the original direct damage can crit, but dots don't crit)
water shield (offensive spells only)
healing spells (again, offensive spells only)
searing totem crits (shouldn't be a surprise, as it doesn't trigger clearcasting, either)
fire/magma totem crits (pity, since spell damage and +crit do affect these)
its own procs (yeah, I was hoping for crazy chains too; oh well)
Now, the good. What
does
trigger it:
lightning bolt crits (duh)
EACH chain lightning crit (yes, that's a max possible of 3 in one shot!)
lightning overload crits (for CL, that's a max possible of 6 in one shot - two procs!)
flametongue weapon crits (making an elemental shaman surprisingly effective with a fast weapon)
shock crits (only the initial cast of flame shock, as was mentioned above)
elemental mastery crits (and yes, to answer the million dollar question: that's 3 FREE CHARGES and an automatic proc for a full crit chain lightning!)
The buff itself is very strange. According to the tooltip, "electrical charge" has no type (magic, poison, etc) so as far as I can tell, it can't be purged or otherwise removed. It doesn't have a timer, nor does it disappear on logout. You can even remove the trinket and the buff remains, though of course it does nothing if you can't get 3. This means that you can charge it twice, remove the trinket (out of combat only, of course), and wait to use that last charge with elemental mastery - great fun in PvP. I've yet to try something like the arena to see if it gets removed when you enter, but that aside, as far as I can tell you could use this thing once, stick the trinket in your bank, and keep the useless buff for the rest of your characters' life.
Unfortunately, spell damage doesn't seem to affect the trinket. My char currently has 544 +damage unbuffed, so even for an instant-cast, he should be seeing a couple hundred added damage, putting the average bolt at around 900. Instead, it tends to hover in the mid- to high-700s, where you'd expect it to based on the items' tooltip. It can crit (some sites have said it uses your spell crit, but I haven't got enough data to confirm or deny that) and seems to crit quite often, though it only does the normal 1.5x damage (around 1100-1200) instead of the 2x elemental shamans are used to.
One strange thing to note, though: I've seen this thing do 836 damage non-crit. That's a tiny buff in damage, but it IS above the max range; what could be giving it that increase? Is it possible it's getting some benefit from the 5% damage increase in talents (concussion)?
It can be difficult to figure out, on a CL crit, which target will get the bolt. I'd never paid close enough attention before to notice, but it seems that chain lightning hits targets in the reverse of the logical order: the target at the end of the chain (furthest from the one you actually had targetted) gets hit FIRST. Since the bolts fire at whichever mob triggered the 3rd buff, that can make it difficult to predict.
An example: lets say you start with 2 buffs. You proc elemental mastery and CL a group of 3 enemies, with enemy 1 targetted. It chains through 2 and on to 3, but starts - as I noted above - with 3. Here's one possible progression:
Hits target 3, auto-crit from EM, fires bolt at 3 and clears charges
Hits target 2, auto-crit from EM, adds a charge
Hits target 1, auto-crit from EM, adds a charge
Lightning overload procs, fires again
Hits target 3, non-crit
Hits target 2, crit, fires bolt, clears charges
Hits target 1, crit, adds a charge
As you can see, we have the capacity for some insane burst damage on rare occasions.
Annoyingly, in the combat log, it's simply referred to as you casting a lightning bolt, and is indistinguishable in every way from your actual bolts. Very frustrating. Had to do a lot of my testing with flametongue just to be able to find them in the log.
All in all, this thing is incredible. Absolutely unmatched for a high-crit elemental shaman, and surprisingly powerful for an enhance/elemental build that focuses on flametongue. I'm not "laying claim" to the item - I'm sure other builds could make use of it, albeit I doubt to our extent - but for an elemental shaman, I'd go so far as to call it the most powerful single item in the game.

I've had this item for a couple months, just looking in here to compare what people are saying about it with some other trinkets I am considering getting.
Some people asked about aoe - yes, it procs off of aoe crits AND molten armor. aoe farming is definately ftw, though I've noticed if you do like 9 crits at once it might not be firing 3 lightning bolts. I'm curious about that now and I'll check my combat log next time.
Funny story - I went afk by the summoning stone on hellfire citadel, and came back and an orc patrol was dead beside me, lootable, and I had about 2k health left. I looked in my combat log and it had killed itself on molten armor + lightning capacitor. :D

I've had this thing for about a week now and its awesome, I hope they don't nerf it again!
I have the Icon of the Silver Crescent, Quagmirran's Eye, and some other stuff and none of them can even come close to this one.
Im deep arcane spec and I use Arcane Missiles as my main source of DPS, with 25% crit chance it means that an average of at least 1 arcane missile hit will crit each cast, which means every 3 casts (or 15 secs) or less, this thing will do an average of 750dmg (crits for about 1050) it would be the equivalent of at least +150 dmg for my spec/spells, which is insane, and when I enter in clearcast with Arcane Potency, its ridiculous!
Note: Be careful with this! specially if u are fire, u'll pull aggro like there is no tomorrow! as this does nature damage, which is unaffected by your threat reduction talents.
I pull aggro from fully decked and skilled tanks very often, and thats with arcane missiles with 40% threat reduction, at 1039 arcane dmg.
Bottom line, this thing is the best trinket for an arcane mage, but any mage will find this thing impressive, until u can find a trinket with more than +150 dmg or equivalent.
I hope this helps if you're trying to decide which trinket to get/wear.

So how much damage does this thing put out anyway? Well is ofc different depending on how fast spell you're casting, crit rating etc.
I got it a few days ago and have been testing it a bit. I'm a fire mage (10/48/3 raidspec) with decent (far from exceptional) gear; got +780 damage, 830 with fire and 22% crit, 31% with fire (not counting Combustion which I use as often as possible and Scorch and Fireblast both have an additional 4% crit). In boss battles I normally spam fireballs, and keep scorching for Fire vulnerability and adding Fireblast whenever it's off CD. In instances I spam a bit more scorch, but not forgetting to ad a fireball where there's time.
When looking at the damage meter after an instance, Lightning Bolt usually seem to do around 5-6% of my total damage.
I also once helped a lvl 57 shaman friend to powerlevel a bit, aoeing the lvl 61-63 orcs outside Hellfice Citadel. While AOEing, I mostly Blast Wave, Dragon's Breath and lots of Arcane Explosion spam (ofc) and ofc some scorches and fireballs too while there was time for it (got the 2-piece setbonus from T4, so there's no interruption from damage when casting Fireball).
During this aoe-session, Lightning bolt was up at about 9% of my total damage. This is naturally a higher per cent simply because the Arcane Explosion (which did about 20-25% of my damage) doesn't do as much damage on a singel target as for example a fireball.
Now this was just an example on how it works for me, but 5-9% of the total damage isn't all that bad for a trinket that doesn't take any of your concentration.
----------------------------
Something to remember though:
* The more +damage you have, the less percentage of your total damage will be dealt from this trinket.
* The more Crit rating you have, the bigger percentage of your total damage will be dealt from this trinket.
-----------------------------
(Disclaimer: As I'm writing this, I'm falling asleep by the computer, so any spelling misstakes or the likes will have to be excused.)

Seems like a exelent elemental shaman trinket in wow 2.3/
good geared elemental will have 30%-40% crit and 20% change LO wich can crit for the 30%-40% ofcours a LO can trigger another LO so in the end its almost 25% now that 25% can crit for your 30%-40% adding another
7,5% or 10% triggering this trinket. thats 37,5% to 50% per cast to trigger it, very nice for a elemental with 2sec casting time. u can have it as fast as every 12seconds(wich probely ends up as -20sec spamming bolts)
if u have this trinket go max on the +spell crit enchaments en gems.

Some simple theorycreafting for this trinket on a frost mage
Lets say with a base 20% to crit, imp Frostbolt and WC on a mob you have 35% chance to crit, trinket procs have 20% chance to crit (since they rely on your base crit).
Frostbolt is casted every 2.5 seconds making the cooldown not effect it.
average damage for trinket is 750
So 35% chance on each hit to do 1/3rd of 750 basically means 250 damage added to every crit however there is a 20% chance it will crit, doing an additional 375 damage, so 20% of that is 75 and thus the average damage each crit will give you is
325.
So theres a 35% chance to get 325 damage therefor there is a 100% chance you will do 113.75 damage on every hit.
And you shoot every 2.5 seconds so its a solid 45.5 dps increase (when standing in one spot forever).
This is the equivilent to around 120+ spell damage. For frost mages this is one of, if not the, best pve trinket in the game.
Keep in mind i am ignoring all factors of resists and partial resists due to simplicty sake.
However for pvp this trinket lacks, 2.5 seconds is far too long of a cooldown to have a good chance of getting shots off, most heated battles don't last very long and another trinket such as 45 stam or pvp resil would be more reliable.
Also I got it for joining a run that was on illhoof, joined, killed, rolled 99, got it, I wasnt aware of how good it is until I looked closer at it. I won the caster belt too with a 93 roll. Makes up for rolling 2 on ZHC back in ZG.

Perhaps the only disadvantage of using this trinket that it seems nobody has mentioned yet is that in a raid when you are critting like crazy you are likely to be pushing the limits of your threat already, and discharging an extra spell that you can't control might just put you over the edge. Just a thought, as a moonkin I find that threat is the number one factor holding back my dps in raids, not the ability to produce damage.

This item is exceptional. Most of the mages I have talked to about this reckon it has been nerfed into uselessness. Turns out none of them have it, or they heven't trialed it fully, or possibly their spec makes it less effective than it could be.
Depending on what I do and what spell you refer to, I have 34-40% fire crit and +1000 fire damage without arcane talents, a crafted/end-of-kara/BG mage. The bolt shoots out after 9 fireballs on average, and can and does crit (for up to 1300). You can cancel the charge (R Click it) if you are worried about pulling aggro early in a battle - the charge remains active after a fight if it has stacked, and even after you log out.
I would reckon on +88 damage over 9 fireballs, if that's what you were doing. And that ignores the crits. One time I was battle rezzed in a Nightbane fight and mana was a real worry. Spamming scorch with this kept my dps up a lot better than I figured it would. Wowikki actually explains how this trinket works in exhaustive detail, well worth checking out.

this trinket is a lot of fun, especially when chaining wrath and moonfire, it is not at all uncommon to see numbers like 2500 2500 1300 1050 all popping up within 2 seconds.
you get the idea. very bursty and seems to add more damage in group PVE situations than any other trinket once you have around 25% spell crit or more. benefits significantly from shorter cast times.
be careful with your aggro =O

I just got this thing on my warlock. I know I know... ninja ftl! well believe it or not i was the only casting dps in our raid. so wewt didn't even have to roll.
anyways, I was messing around with it in destruction spec, and apparently it works with the ruin talent(100% bonus damage on spell critical strikes). I was getting a lot of 1500ish crits with it.
I think all in all, it is best to have pure +spell damage trinkets on a warlock since they help not just sbolts etc, but also dots. However with a really high crit rating, spamming searing pain, immolate, incinerate, and conflagrate... warlocks can get some seriously insane burst damage using this trinket. Ruin ftw.
It might not be the best trinket out there.... but man it's a lot of fun!

This trink, with the Wraith card,is an idea set-up for a icy veins deep fire build. Add in haste and spell hit gear, popping combustion this card would do major damage, esp if your last cast was Pyroblast. Got the card tonight shooting for the other now. Anyone got any theory-craft on what this would do damage output wise in a 7 minute fight?

if u r shaman/dmoonkin u dont have to warry abour 2.5 sec rule
u can still gain charges every crit is u max range, time for spell takes to fly + ping its more than 2.5 sec, workd beautifull with wrath and lightning bolt

this is very useful for a elemental shaman, i crit about 40% of the time (armory milkmoo and check my spec for details) and in my opinion if the tank can't hold agro after hitting a mob for more then 5 speconds he isn't a good tank, basicly if you have a good tank you can unload , proc this alot and not worry about getting agro.(also elemental mastery+chain lightning only gets 1 charge, not a proc, it has a 2.5 CD)

For mages who use Arcane Missles, this item is an extremely effective trinket(assuming crit is is geater than 20%). Each missle has a good chance to crit and if you get clearcast Arcane Missles you'll get an almost guaranteed lighting blast. I have a 25% crit chance, with that + clearcasting I have noticed a charge firing every 8 individual missles on average. The charge hits and crits for a value almost identical to arcane missles, so in effect, it almost grants an extra missle. With this information on actual usage, it is valuable both in PVE and Soloing/farming.

It is very funny and the best is the eletrical charge is keeping until you log out or discharged by 3 times charging
the crit spell count on everything, you can use the lowest lvl spell crit a mouse/spider... to charge up before getting to next battle
Therefore, although pve and pvp, it still is a good trinkle
I haven't tried it in Arena

As of TBC Classic 2021, this trinket is BiS for pvp fire mages. This trinket still has similar effects like "can't proc more than every 2.5 secs" but IT DOES proc multiple times within a smaller window, effectively ignoring this rule. Example: you cast fireball and then cast scorch at max range. Both crit. With the given travel time of the fireball, you can gain 2 charges together before creating a 2.5 sec window that you may not gain any charge. Can you crit someone 3 times within a small enough window to instantly fire off a lightning bolt? YES.
Does this proc off any kind of spell crit? Yes. Icelance spam on chasing druids, frost nova crits, molten armor crits, molten armor crits with molten shield talent (which makes it hit ranged and spell casters). I've had many foes kill themselves by proccing the final 3rd charge and having a lightning bolt discharge at them while I'm silenced, when I'm near death, or from just spamming icelance at me. Because this thing can proc off multiple hits simultaneously, I've had 4-5 damage crits appear on an enemy and the final killing blow is a slow moving lightning bolt. Quite breath taking.
Charges of this trinket last through trinket swapping, through all instances, and logging out. They cannot be dispelled or removed in any way.
I'd say mages are 2nd best takers for this trinket. This trinket launches A SPELL. Which means it benefits from all the mage talents that list "all spells/your spells" as affected. Things this trinket can benefit from as a mage: Molten Fury (20% more damage on targets at 20% or less health), Spell power (arcane talent that increases crit damage by 25/50%, this thing will crit harder with this talent), and lastly, paladin wings. Spell stealing paladin wings will increase the damage of this spell proportionately.
If I were a battleground loving mage, I'd roll on this against shamans, no questions asked. It is pure JOY playing with this trinket, and it has been the equalizer in many a 1v1s I've come across. I've killed running druids because I can only cast icelance and fireblast while chasing. I've killed shamans through grounding totems with this thing. I've procced a molten armor crit ON MYSELF from a warrior's spell reflect, the proc will shoot me with a lightning bolt. I'm sure there's more possibilities out there. If you're lucky enough to grab this thing, which I presume will be on farm through all of TBC for some ppl, I'm sure you'll find stranger scenario's for which this thing can proc. Happy hunting.
