I don't know where the percentages come from, they seem rather high.
As of patch 2.0.10 the best mobs to farm are the Clefthoof Bull's (~14% droprate based on ~450 kills).
These mobs can be found in the area south of the Laughing Skull Ruins and west of the Horde village Garadar and north of Halaa.
Don't bother with the normal Clefthoof mobs, their droprate is so much lower (~5%).
It seems the droprate since patch 2.0.10 has been increased. I frequently get 2 in a row and getting 5-6 in a row are no exceptions. Good thing since for some craftables you need 40 of them.

Its easy too farm them.. just west of garadar there is alot of bull's and wild elekk spawns too(for rep) and storm rager(for mote of air). farmed a stack in 20 min.. easy way too get money if your 335 LW and can make Clefthide leg armor.

They are selling for 80-100g a stack of 20 on my server, nice means of cash and easily farmable.

I belive the drop rate on these was at some point reduced by bliz curently geting a 23% drop rate from clefthoof bulls in Nagrand (507/2177) skins

After many hours of farming and a lot of thinking I found out that blizzard had implemented some awesome algorithm to calculate the drop chance of clefthoof leathers! It's a simple modification of the "I WILL BREAK YOUR NERVES" algorithm.!

The location of spawn north-west of Garadar is the best spot for finding these, however if you are alliance there may be lots of horde activities and gankage is possible XD
if you are afraid of being ganked, or is being targetted by horde, the location next to the lake on the east of Trelaar is the best

I like to AE farm these out by where Durn spawns and wonders. Theres 1 bull in each pack + the others give leather. The above locations are correct and possibly faster for getting just the clefhoot leather, but ive found its a favorite location for china farmers, so if these places are camped, go out to the open field and farm them. Agroing the bull wont pull the rest of the pack.

I don't but it's so expensive in these days (80-90g a stack - Executus / EU). I've check some of EU servers and prices between 60-120g for a stack.

Found them at 46,76. A couple of herds converge here. If you take a friend or two, you can kill both herds and your farming may take a little less time. The drop rate is around 22%.

Best route for farming this leather is to start grinding Clefthoof Bulls south-west of Garadar and move north-west killing them along the way. Then turn back and same thing again, you don't have to wait for respawns at all, even if ther is little competition. Got exactly 195/650 (30%)

It seems that only people who get very lucky on drop rates post about items, so for all of you depressed people who think they are extremely unlucky, this post is for you! Either I'm also very unlucky or it's just a horrible drop rate, but I've killed about 90 bulls and I've gotten 7 pieces of the thick clefthoof leather. Considering I'm after 94 pieces total to make all 3 heavy clefthoof items, if my luck doesn't improve it's going to take killing ~1,200 clefthoof bulls to get what I need. Now I know why it's so expensive on the auction house - stack of 20 of this would probably take me about 6 hours to get, which justifies those AH prices of 5-10g each on my server. I normally get 1-3 knothide scraps (pretty large creatures to yield such a small amount!), every 5th or 6'th one drops an actual whole piece of knothide leather, and every dozen or so kills nets me a thick clefthoof leather. I like Mira's idea! Good post, thanks! =] Good luck and don't get too down if it takes forever to farm this - your experience is probably normal!

Hehe i was the first person to start selling these on Eonar and set the price at 4g each....ive made at least 300g off these things so far =D best place to skin them is off the Clefthoof Bulls to the east of Telaar.

I am a
level 355 leatherworker
and in order to get guaranteed (ReddishOrange) skill points I need several pieces of
Thick Clefthoof Leather
per each pattern:
Heavy Clefthoof Boots = 20 Thick Clefthoof Leather
Heavy Clefthoof Leggings = 34 Thick Clefthoof Leather
Enchanted Clefthoof Boots = 16 Thick Clefthoof Leather
Clefthide Leg Armor = 8 Thick Clefthoof Leather but it's gray to me now
Hope this explains why it's so much in demand. Any questions about these crafted items can be directed to me on Destromath Level 68 Troll Hunter.

Maybe it was just a good percentage roll, but I was getting about 25-30% off the bulls around the compound today.

in my experience best place is nagrand just south of laughing skull ruins. the bulls there drop
1 in 7-10. the drop rate in northern blade's edge may be better but the mobs are 5-7 levels higher so take longer to kill and more downtime. plus there are air/earth elementals around that drop motes of air/earth at a decent rate. by the by i guess there are a lot of skinners on my server cause a 20 stack goes for 40G in AH.

I know in Everquest items where nerfed by lvl so that if you went into a zone being a low lvl you would get better drops. Well its never been spoke of that WoW does this but I am asking the question now because of these Clefthoof leathers. At lvl 67 i got back to back drops of Thick Clefthoof leathers. As soon as i reached lvl 68 i logged and came back a few days later and after killing over 30 including Bulls, Aged, Calves and Regulars across the zone I have not been able to get one to drop. I jsut wanted to see if anyone had any insight on the mechanics of the game so I can make a decision to buy them at 6g a piece or just keep trying.

Hey, I'm from a pvp server called Blackrock. I farmed the Clefthoof north of halaa near the horde base, and moved my way eastwards so forth. I get about 100 clefthoof leather per 3 hrs. avg 33 per hour. then while waiting for respawns go to the seat of elements and farm Air elementals for primals same with fire and water. In a good 7 hour farm, I make leg armors and sell the primals. making a total profit of about 1700g.
Normal Clefthide leg armors sell for 120g each on my server. if you go the Cobrascale leg armors they sell for about 270g. Very easy for me to make gold, if I put in the time. the avg drop rate for clefthoof leather according to my mod is 47.2% and for the cobra scales is about 22%. Thats everytime, if not a higher %age. I take about 3-4 clefthoof at a time.
70 NE hunter. Huntdamunky. Alliance. 2200RAP, 25% crit, 100 hit. 375 LW / 375 Skinning.

After getting about 400 thick clefthoof leathers, my experience is that 66 bulls drop them almost twice as often as 65 bulls.
Currently, you can obtain these at around 25% (1 in 4 skins) for the level 66 bulls. Level 65 are only around (1 in 7 skins) 15%. Anyway, that's what I've been seeing to date.

The amberpelts do have the highest droprate (about 1 in 4 in my experience) but they hit harder and take a lot longer to kill. IMO, kill the bulls. You'll get these at the same rate, plus other skins.

I'm starting to understand why these sell for so much. I'm a leatherworker, and have just grinded ~600 of these. From 350-375. And i'm stuck at 374.
These sell at such high prices because leatherworkers feel like they might toss their cookies if they have to see another clefthoof bull.
Drop ratio for me so far has been 1/5, roughly :)

As an alternative, I might suggest riding crops -
I took a slight loss, but the points weren't so hard - 350 to 370 was a LOT easier for me than almost everyone else I know.
What I did was pulled together mats for a couple of riding crops, and then offered to craft them in exchange for ONLY the primal might in return.
Small pris shards are 5g on my server, and I don't mind farming the heavy knothide. Arcane dust can be bought, but it isn't tough to get someone to DE greens for you for the dust.
So, I just told people in trade: Want a Riding Crop? Give me a Primal Might - no other tips/mats required -
And bam - I could turn these over and over.
If you happen to be 70 and working on this, than your daily quests alone will provide more than enough cash for the other mats. Or offer to trade a riding crop for a suitable stack of whatever mats you want.
Hope this helps you out!
~Darq of CC~
PS - riding crop WILL go green on you at 370 - so you may want to go ahead and figure out what things you want to make for yourself for those last 5 points. For me, it will be 3 pieces of Heavy Clefthoof Armor for my bear kit.

59,71 is a good farming spot
For those without coords
East of Telaar, as soon as you leave the bridge take a right...about 6-8 patrolling mobs you can kill and skin.

Like mentioned in 1 of the comments above.. NW of Garadar is really good a lot of them and the first will respawn before u have killed the last ones...
Remember only kill the ones with red names "Clefthoof Bulls" the ones just called Clefthoof have a !@#$ty droprate...
And a bit of advice for LWs who hasnt reached 70 yet. at lvl 69 spent some time getting exp from killig and skinning these, then u don't have to do it l8er :D saves u some time at lvl 70.
But i killed evry bull i saw in Nagrand and got 22 Thick clefthoof leather in 1 hour, not too bad
Have fun all
bye

I think we're all getting a little spoiled.
Spent 30 minutes NW of Garador this afternoon (30 minutes was about all the time I had) and was able to get 15 Clefthoof hides and about 9 knothides (almost all from scraps), 17 Clefthoof Meat plus vendor trash in the amount of about 3G and 2 Eternium Lockboxes, which count as greens (since that's what will be in them). Had to kill some of those annoying windy elementals, who have never dropped anything other than a Bronx Cheer for me, so that was time wasted, but...
My 70 Hunter likes to take these guys 2 or 3 at a time and most times I won't drag anything else in with Multi-Shot, so it's fairly efficient.
But in contrast, I assembled the Stormshroud armor set last week (4 patterns) and that requires you to kill these Murloc Oracles at the Temple of Arkkoran in Azshara. Level 53 and 54 but lots of other trash mobs around. I think I killed about 350 before the pattern dropped. Then 45 annoying elite giants who could't figure out whether they were amphibians or not, then....it goes on. I had to kill Princess Tempestria to get the gloves, not that she's a big problem but she sure does take her time showing up for an appointment... Remember also that Azshara has no inn, no mailbox, a Bowyer 250 miles away through hordes of unskinnable naga but no one to sell any ammo. I didn't even see an outhouse.
So killing these BUFs, given what they drop, is looking pretty good in comparison.

when you hit 370 LW i suggest the drums of panic from keepers of time. you no longer need exalted for the pattern, only honored, uses 4 fel hide and some heavy knothide. pretty easy for a higher end pattern

I decided after using thottbot for the last year to actually do something helpful and post a comment of my own. For all those leatherworkers taking the Heavy Clefthoof set option to 375 be prepared to spend days grinding on the dam Bulls with some heavy competition, I got my leatherworking to 374 thinking only needed to make one more item in order to level but sadly no and ended up making 8 more items with a 160 extra Clefthoof involved, and this stuff is not cheep on my server 80-120 gold a stack. So make sure you get extra if you’re taking this path to master leatherworking. Happy farming :)

I spent 35 min yesterday grinding these. My findings were that the drop rate is decent. But i was killing all the air elementals as well...
After the 35 min i had 22 Clefthoof leather, 37 knothide leather (after putting the scraps together), 8 motes of air and 3 greens(they DE'd into 7 arcane dust, just enouph for a enchant). Im going to be grinding more of these today and i will put up numbers once i get them. Also on my server primal earth is going for 3-4g and i just made 2 clefthoof leg armor kits and sold them for 55g each. So LW and skinning are a great way to grind money. If i could only hold onto the money i make...

The drop rate...
was fine for the first 21 (lvl 65 and 66s) had 7 TCL, but it took another 29 before i got my 8th TCL :((( called it quits for that day - was not a happy camper!
Next day, 60 skins = 23 TCL :)

I started farming Clefthoofs again recently (after a 6 month layoff) and the droprate seems to have improved greatly. Ironically enough, I already had two stacks of Chefthoof Leather and was mainly after the Knothide Leather to begin with...lol.
I farm a semicircle starting from the plain west of Garadar through to southeast of the village. By the time I've finished, they'll be starting to respawn back at the starting point. An added bonus is killing the Air Elementals that drop Motes of Air every 4-5 kills or so.
From less than an hour's farming, I made two Clefthide Patches and a Primal Air, which works out to around 200g profit with the cost of 8 x Primal Earth taken into account. I also got three greens (those Clefthoofs must have had pockets) and a bunch of vendor trash.
