Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Phase 4 Zul'Aman for Retribution Paladin DPS in The Burning Crusade Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for Retribution Paladin DPS to acquire while they progress during the fourth phase of The Burning Crusade Classic, and contains gear sourced from Zul'Aman, Black Temple, and Mount Hyjal, plus other pieces from previous phases like Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, heroic dungeons, arena PvP Gear, professions, BoE World Drops, and reputations.

Preface about gearing as a Retribution Paladin
As with any other dps class, gearing for retribution paladin is heavily reliant on your overall hit rating. You want to get as close to 9% hit overall with your raid comp. That is going to follow the following situations:
6% hit from gear with only 3/3 in
5% hit from gear with 3/3 in
plus

Most of this gear is made assuming the first factor: 3% hit from gear with only 3/3 in
as this is the standard Retribution Spec option, and most raids are using the moonkin for
. With that in mind, if you have higher hit from other pieces, some pieces will be more valuable for you if you don't have a moonkin (or resto kin).
Gemming as a Ret Paladin
As a ret paladin, gemming is less of a complicated thing. You are really aiming to prioritize 2 things:
1) As much strength as possible (Through

and
朴素赤尖石
)
2) Maximize high str socket bonuses and high strength socket bonuses when possible.
3) Maintaining your 2 yellow / blue requirement to activate the

in your meta socket.
Because of this, for the most part you ignore socket bonuses other than when Bonuses that give you "bonus attack power" or "strength" and have alternate gem sockets such as yellow. To cover these requirements, you will want to get 2

Aldor vs. Scryer for Ret Paladin DPS in Phase 4
With ZA / Phase 4, there is an almost negligible difference between Aldor and Scryer. This decision does not matter until Phase 5 (Sunwell Plateau). I have Aldor listed as that is what you will do

in those later phases, but for now the overall effect doesn't matter.

At some point before the

you should get some prot gear, specifically

as its incredibly strong for tanking. In most realistic cases, the only item you will want to be getting for ret is

, as everything else on this list is replaced with Tier 5 / 6 level gear. This trinket should be your #1 priority, but then you should look at getting your prot gear after this point.

being present, and is your theoretical BIS set. Two other sets have been provided to take into account if you do not have a boom/resto kin in your raid, the first uses the exact same enchants as the
gear setup, and swaps out whole pieces that can be gemmed to acquire 94 hit rating. This lets you avoid having to swap entire enchants around if your boomkin is missing. The 2nd one is the theoretical "BIS" set without a
debuff.

Tier 6 has two set bonuses:

The 2 piece is proving to be very strong, a great boost to mana allowing for more use of
, keeping mana higher during trash so you don't have to drink as much, etc. The 4 piece is a total trap until Wrath of the Lich King pre-patch.
is a dps loss to use in almost all situations, and increasing its damage by 10% still doesn't do anything. When you want to run the 2p however, you are locked into one of two paths. Running chest:

, giving you a bigger mana pool, letting you run more consecration which is kind of the point of running 2p t6. Either scenario will really mess with your hit values, so you will need to add some off gemming to which ever piece you're using to make sure you're at hit cap.
Overall there is a measured damage decrease running these two tier sets (more information to come as the ret simulation matures, but currently about 20-30 dps) but your major advantage will be the added mana pool will increase your sustain through an instance.
