Welcome to Wowhead's Best in Slot Gear list from Phase 5 Sunwell Plateau for Arcane Mage DPS in The Burning Crusade Classic. This guide will list the recommended gear for Arcane Mage DPS to acquire while they progress during the fifth and final phase of The Burning Crusade Classic, which contains gear sourced from Sunwell Plateau, Zul'Aman, Black Temple, and Mount Hyjal, plus other pieces from previous phases like Serpentshrine Cavern, Tempest Keep, heroic dungeons, arena PvP Gear, professions, BoE World Drops, and reputations.
Best In Slot Gear for Arcane Mage DPS in Phase 5
Approaching how to gear your Arcane Mage can be challenging as there's a lot of options and every stat is valuable in it's own way. Especially with a wide variety of fight lengths in
太阳之井高地
where specific stats can shift a fair bit. I built this guide with the most realistic setup that'll perform the best in both long and short fights outside of a couple pieces of loot which I'll explain further in the item rankings.
Phase 5 Gearing
With the introduction of
太阳之井高地
, there are several longer fights than what we've seen until now. These are somewhat counterproductive to arcane mage's advantages, but are still within the range where arcane remains as the
best spec
to play throughout the entire phase. By using
filler rotations
combined with
high burst phases
we remain competitive with most classes still.
It's key to note that Alliance benefit from 1% extra spell hit through their shaman's racial ability
. This creates some disparities between optimal alliance and horde sets. I'll touch on these differences in the respective item's topic. For the most part these differences are related to neck, rings and trinkets, but can be worked around with other slots depending on what you have available to you.
I want to mention that I built this set with basic support in mind in a 240s up to 300s fight duration range, with 30s variance. This is realistic for most phase 5 fights and past that duration the set doesn't change much. One likely scenario this phase is not having access to
嗜血
as it provides more benefits to other groups through shaman group swaps. As for the support I mentioned I'm talking about 3 things:

mana regeneration

One of your Druid's

This should apply to the majority of players, and within these parameters the following set will allow you to do the most possible damage within the limitations of the spec. But in the off chance that you're in a unique situation, the

Best in Slot Phase 5 Setup
AoE Optimal Overall Performance
With
太阳之井高地
's release, we'll get a raid that is unlike previous ones, since it does not have much trash within it. Combined with the fact that our single target best in slot set already contains so much spell haste to begin with, giving up spell crit or spell power in favor of more spell haste just isn't as worthwhile anymore.
One thing that's still very worth thinking about is trinket-swapping, as rotating through a few select trinkets can have a massive impact on your performance regardless of the raid's content. Here are the ones that are still within reason to use and why:

continues to be the most powerful AoE trinket, but shouldn't be combined with other haste abilities and actives.

has a similar use to Mind Quickening Gem but is equipped with a lower cooldown, allowing for more uses.
洞察之灰舌符咒
is one best static trinket in your collection and should almost always be equipped in AoE situations since it'll have 100% uptime in AoE.

is now introduced and alongside some spellhaste, also has the highest spellpower boost in TBC.

is worth if your

is available which then provides 225 spell power and has crit built into it, this is one of the best trinkets as long as the pack you're fighting is below AoE cap.

is great if you're under AoE cap as it's basically a better
银色新月徽记

has it's niche spot for situations where you're AoE capped (usually 14+ targets), which allows you to add damage above that point through it's Lightning Bolts.
逆流六分仪
isn't especially best at anything but it's consistent at what it does, it provides 40 spell crit and has a really good 190 spellpower proc.
Aldor Vs Scryer for Arcane Mage DPS in Phase 5
At this point in the game mages are likely to already have either one or the other but if not here is some basic information:
Aldor provides +18 spell power, and +10 spell crit rating
Scryer provides +12 spell power, and +15 spell crit rating
They're extremely close when it comes to output but to summarize you should make your decision based on what you focus on - Aldor pushes ahead by about 2-3 DPS in Single Target, while Scryer outperforms by a similar amount in AoE scenarios.

Phase 5 brings with it some new items you can buy with

and craft it this phase, downside is it requires tailoring to wear which is a downgrade by itself - but it's also not as good as the formerly mentioned chestpiece regardless. It's only worth mentioning if you're starting out. Until you get one of these pieces,

continues to be good if used for the four piece set bonus of the
提瑞斯法

is only mentioned as a spell hit option.

Mobility is too important to pass up in end-game content so

since it still gives you movement speed but not the stamina, which can save you in some situations. Although it's not a bad idea temporarily if you're short on gold.

Neck
Neck is one of the slots where the best in slot item changes depending on a few factors. Main thing to consider here is Alliance has access to
from their Shamans which provides extra 1% spell hit to casters.

is best in slot mostly for Horde players, specifically if using

combo. If you're still spell hit capped through other items before you get your entire best in slot set - then

is still better regardless.

is better essentially in any case where you're hit capped. Alliance players have an easier gearing path here and can just entirely skip trying to get

. Another good example is if you're using
古尔丹之颅
combined with one of the former two trinkets for your set as Horde.
Until you get to the point where these decisions matter for you,
阳炎坠饰
is a great option in the case you're already Jewelcrafting, it's not amazing by any means considering the loss in dps from giving up other professions but still has some early value. If you're not Jewelcrafting, you can grab

quite easily and it performs better than most previous alternatives from all past raids that I didn't mention in the list.

and
夜枭之链
are both still worth noting as they provide group-wide buffs which have greater impact than the single target performance of most if not any neck. These can and should be coordinated with your raid or group for high uptime during end-game content.

. This ring is great for both factions, but especially good for Horde players as it solves a lot of our spell hit issues throughout the phase. In the case of Alliance players, if you're using something like

as one of your trinkets, and are over spell hit cap - then

is a good option, but a very small upgrade over the other two.
If you cannot afford

is a great alternative until you can, with a similar use case for hitting spell hit cap while getting some spell haste on top. If you're already spell hit capped then

continues to be a great ring to use until you get your best in slot.

In phase 5 there are three different best in slot trinket setups, depending on faction and fight duration:

are great for longer fights, since

matches it's cooldown with 3 minute cooldowns such as

. This setup is best when you're spell hit capped, meaning it's great for Alliance players, or in the case of using different spell hit items elsewhere such as

, also good for Horde players.

gets high value in fights where you don't have access to

, this happens because
古尔丹之颅
can then be used earlier meaning you oftentimes get an extra activation in many fight durations. It's a great trinket setup for Horde players due to the extra spell hit - it also enables you to use
自然怜悯胸针
as your best in slot neck instead.
古尔丹之颅
and
妖术之颅
perform similarly to the other
古尔丹之颅
combination, it also has the save advantages towards gearing for Horde players due to the spell hit allowing for different items on other slots. This setup is slightly harder to play but easier to obtain as both trinkets were already in-game before phase 5.
Until you have either of these setups, some other trinkets are still useful for niche cases or gearing path:
盘蛇饰带
is useful for high burst phases and some extra mana throughout the fight, also provides some much needed spell hit which can help early on.
洞察之灰舌符咒
can be combined with
逆流六分仪
for good synergy - this combo has some of the highest performance potential in extremely short fights.
电容器
continues to be one of the best trinkets if capped in aoe situations and still a great early trinket that can be used temporarily.
银色新月徽记
and
黑铁烟枪
got replaced by
妖术之颅
but they're still useful early trinkets to use in higher-end raids until you get better.

Annihilator Holo-gogs are not pre-raid. They are BoP and the schematic only drops in SWP; realistically that makes it a raid item.
