Why is it addictive? FIrst it's the quests, lore and world that pulls you in. Then it's progression. And then, it's the people. You don't want to let down those you've raided with!

It's addictive because there is always something else to do.

I thik so, but I wouldn't call it addictive.
Addiction doesn't have to be a physical stimulation. In fact, the very feeling you get from acomplishing something and getting praise, spurs you to dedicate more time and energy into the game.

Studies by the APA and 3rd party groups have shown that MMORPG's stimulate the same area of the brain that drugs do, and, the socialization you get in MMO's stimulate the same areas of the brain that regular, RL socialization does. The APA is trying to get MMO/video game addiction officially recognized and accepted.
APA- American Psychological (or Psychiatric ) Association
I suspect its the ease of escaping responsibilites and duties in life. One has to do things they don't always want to. Get a job, go to school, do homework, deal with social situations some may find awkward, etc.. Now there is a game that can replace that. By playing WoW you can be occupied with things to do for years on end. There is an entire community involved so it feels like a "social" thing. There are discussions and forums devoted to it so it feels like a legit life choice. In other words, your not the only one who is making the decision to give up thier life to play WoW endlessly.
Over all I suspect it stems from a simple sense of lazyness. Why work when you can just play WoW? Why go to class or study when you can just play WoW? Why try to make friends or keep old friendships when you can just play WoW?
I personally know 4 people who play WoW besides me. Two of them have literally dropped out of life and at 30, have since moved back in with thier parents and now, only play WoW. They quit their jobs, stopped talking with all of our old friends, haven't had a GF in years and now all they do is play WoW about 15 or so hours a day, 7 days a week. One of those four has since lost (quit) his job, but manages to hang on to his fiancee. Not by much though. They are to be getting married this summer and I have heard her telling people that if he doesn't stop playing so much she is going to move the wedding date back. She doesn't want a guy who is going to spend the next 2 or 3 years devoted to WoW. Me and one of my other friends manage it. We can play WoW, work and keep up with class. My other friend though is going more and more into the addictive stage though. Soon there will be only me. I have thought about quiting this game 100 times and haven't yet. Who knows, maybe its already to late for me.
That is completely untrue. It has nothing to do with laziness. Laziness does not cause an addiction. There's plenty of people who don't do anything but don't play WoW either... are they addicted to sleeping and sitting on the couch? No. Junkies and alcoholics work and go to school too, they aren't all living on the streets or in slum houses.

Its a community. Most people feel more welcomed inside online communities because well face it. Its the internet. You can do pretty much anything. FLEX THOSE E-MUSCLES!

this.
Yes, and not just something to do, but there is always a reward for anything you do. You kill a mob: here's some silver. You do a quest: here's some gold. You sit in bg: here's some honor.
There's also stuff to do around the house, but you clean dishes ... here's more dishes. You wash the floor ... it's dirty again ... no reward.

i socialize with some friends irl by drinking with them or playing wow with them. am i addicted and an alcoholic?
I do the same thing. Usually everything I do in WoW on friday and/or saturday's involves beer. My guild loves it I'm sure on 5 mans, but it's a good time!
