Sells honor gear.
The cap is more of a "How much you can have at once" cap than anything else, as far as i know.
Calling the following "/2 LF 2s" should get you an arena team if your lucky.
Upgrades are more or less just another way of making your gear better like gems and enchants.
PVP power is just reverse Resilience.
Resilience decreases damage to take
Power increases the effect of your own attacks (or heals if your a healer spec)
The "Transfer the stats" thing is called transmogrification, which works like this.
You go to the ethereals (Talk to a footman about it, i'm too busy) and you need to have the gear you want to have the stats for equipped.
Following this, go up to the guy that transmogrifies (Transmogs) stuff and right click the gear who's look you want, you will be billed a chunk of gold and you get a new look.
This fixes "Clownsuits" and is JUST in time considering we don't all have to look like something out of an oriental !@#$fest.

Gearing up for PvP:
-Buy or craft a Contender set
-Fill non PvP slots with honor items
-Try to get the most Conquest Points you can every week in order to buy your PvP Weapon as soon as possible. This weapon has PvP power on it, which will increase your damage or healing by alot compared to any PvE weapon. Should take you 3-4 weeks to be able to buy it , due to a cap on how much Conquest Points you can earn weekly.
Good luck!

OK, I will attempt to answer each of your questions in order. I too mainly PvP solo, although I have dabbled with Arena and Rated BG's. Solo fits my time schedule better.
The honor point cap is set at 4000 total, but there is no limit to how much honor you can gain in one week, so if you grind battlegrounds you can get the basic blue quality set of PvP gear fairly quickly. Obviously focus on getting your 4 piece set bonus completed first (Chest/Legs/Shoulder/Head/Hand) as the 4 piece buffs tend to be helpful.
Fill out your remaining slots with the best possible PvE gear, but replace this as soon as possible, because you really need the PvP Power and PvP resilience for viability and survivability.
When doing battlegrounds, if you do the random daily or the selected battleground of the week, you can also earn 100 Conquest points for your first win of the day, and 50 for each subsequent win. It takes longer to get enough to purchase something from the conquest vendor this way then going the arena/rated BG route, but it can be done. These points DO have a weekly cap, correct me if I am wrong but I think it is 1200 per week. To get your PvP weapon requires you to earn 7500 conquest points in an arena PvP season, so it can take a while if you are only earning 500 or so conquest points a week. This, combined with the conquest point cap, forces you to buy several pieces of conquest PvP gear before you get a PvPweapon.
Another fairly quick way to potentially earn a high level PvP piece is to join a Sha of Anger raid each week. This is a fairly quick and easy event and you stand a decent chance of having a useful PvP piece drop for you as loot.
Hope this helps, and good luck.
