Can someone please explain, or point me to a page somewhere that can explain how the system works? so I can understand why sometimes I have to wait an hour to play, and sometimes only a few minutes.
Thanks in advance :)

Simple: The battleground system works by pairing up as close to equal numbers of people in a specific numbered battleground as possible.
When Queued, it adds you to a "line" in the battlegroup which then picks the first (Say, 10 people, such as in WSG) 10 people and forms a Horde and Alliance side. Generally it forms a match when there are at least 8 available people per side.
In other words: Your Queue time is entirely dependent on the number of other players wanting to do that BG.

So more people = less time?

Pretty much.

It's worth noting you can't queue for more than two different battlegrounds at a time, and if you're queued for a battleground you can't also queue for a dungeon or raid.

Are you saying battlegrounds are worthless?

No he is saying that you can either queue BG or lfd. Not both. They are completely different things - BG for PVP and dungeon/raid for PVE.
Also, BGs need to have a certain number of ppl in the queue, both side, before it will start.
I know tha you can only queue for one or the other, I'm not an idiot.
I'm confused as to what he thinks is worth nothing.

He said it's worth "noting"...not "nothing".
That is why I am confused as to why you asked that question.
Oh, my god.
Now I feel like a huge arse.
When I read that the first time I must have read it as nothing, assuming that he accidentally left out the "t" and not looking back at it.
I must be an idiot. :(
