This will become a new baseline ability for all specs apart from MM in 5.4

Marksmanship will get instead of this ability.

The difference is that Silencing Shot silences, but this spell merely interrupts.

This spell, Counter Shot, now baseline for all hunters in 5.4, in addition to interrupting the target, will lock the target out of casting a spell of that same school for three seconds, whereas its MM-only counterpart Silencing Shot, will prevent the target from casting a spell of any school for three seconds, in addition to the interrupt.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Are they unhappy that Silencing Shot is a popular talent in PvP and PvE? I've been playing as MM for a few months now (was Survival early MoP, then BM until I got bored of how faceroll it was) and the spec is very strong. It won't make too much difference to MM hunters to swap in and out of Wyvern and Binding for whatever they need to do, but the loss of Silencing Shot for the other two specs is overkill.

BM already lost Intimidation so they couldn't gib anyone in globals (at least that was the theory, obviously it doesn't work right now), and Survival lacks any kind of self healing through their specialistion and the second tier isn't enough to keep them going when their damage is dealt in a similar way to Warlocks - apply DoTs, cast steady damage and procs.

All three specs suffer from being silenced - it stops Kill Command being cast, Traps being used, pet rez and heal, and possibly more. This is on top of being near useless while disarmed, and was sometimes used as a counter itself against other classes apart from casters such as Warriors or Death Knights using certain abilities. I wonder if Hunters would suffer much if that silence was removed or if they would feel more balanced - perhaps more of a return to proper kiting.

Perhaps they'll bring back a form of Counterattack in this tier instead; that'd be nice to see - I sometimes miss that little melee side to a hunter from days gone, and it was a cool talent back when dd didn't need self healing to be viable specs in pvp.

However, you're looking at the situation now where all specs have a baseline interrupt or silence and can now chain those with Scatter Shot and the talents, and play in a comp like say... Surv Hunter with a Gorilla / Frost Mage / Unh DK - that's a 24 sec blanket from the mage, followed by whatever the DK can do (two grips, Strang / Asph, Mind Freeze) and then the Hunter, with a 24 sec cd 4 sec interrupt and Pummel from the gorilla - 30 second cooldown; which can be manually cast while the hunter is cc'd.

Imagine trying to cast a heal in 3v3 with all that xD

The only ray of hope is that Readiness is gone, so there's no chain scatters and traps.

I predict that hunters will see a significant decline in arena, but the good players will remain in a strong position, and elsewhere it'll remain pretty much stable.

In case anyone else tries checking Wowhead before logging onto their hunter to find out for themselves: this spell does not appear to have a travel time. If you can press the button in time for the request to get to the server before the cast finishes, you can interrupt it.
