If you leave Peak of Serenity the cooldown is triggered and you may not use the spell to return to where you were.

There is currently a daily quest Monks get, starting at level 20, that means they use this ability, do some stuff, and get a 50% exp buff.

You can't actually leave the Peak of Serenity if you go there using this. If you try, you get teleported back to the trainer and warned that it's dangerous outside the Peak.

I assume that you can fly away at level 90 without trouble, though.

for me it has happened a number of times now that the CD was triggered the moment i got ported in.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, i cannot really see a discernible pattern to it triggering the CD.

After this you have to HS and fly back to where you came from.

If you ported in with the idea of getting Enlightenment for questing and levelling, you're going to be losing valuable time if the CD is triggered.

This is also handy if you have fought your way to the back of some cave and don't want to fight your way out, or are lost (not that that ever happens to me LOL). Zen Pilgrimage and quick return takes you to the nearest graveyard, which is usually closer than using the hearthstone.

As of 2012-10-08, if you teleport to a Dungeon Finder dungeon while on Zen Pilgrimage, it is possible to become completely trapped at the Peak of Serenity, unable to teleport out by any means: the Hearthstone, Summon Friend, the unstuck suicide feature and so on will simply teleport you to either the Shrine of the Ox or the Peak graveyard.

There are two workarounds:

Queue through the Dungeon Finder, then use the Hearthstone from the dungeon.
Ask a level 90 mage to fly to the Peak and open a portal for you.

More exploration:

Currently, it is possible to break through the teleport that encircles the invisible walls of the Peak of Serenity, and thus venture outside into Kun-Lai Summit. To do this, commit suicide at the Peak (by drowning in the lake or by using the "Return to Graveyard" option in the "Character stuck" window), then ghost run towards the sea until you "die" of fatigue. You will appear at a different Kun-Lai graveyard, from where you can resurrect using the Spirit Healer.

Is there a new way to restart this quest or get another Zen Pilgrimage? I clicked mine and nothing happened and it wouldn't work again and Blizzard wouldn't give me any answers.

I love this spell.

This can effectively be used as a super hearthstone. If you use Zen Pilgrimage once to teleport from your current location to the Peak Of Serenity and then use a hearthstone while at the Peak, you can return to your starting location. Pretty handy if you want to hearth back to town and then return quickly to where you were before.

It's also pretty handy for quickly leaving caves.

As a side note, if you happen to use this spell while attempting to swim from Vashj'ir to Tol Barad (fatigue started setting in), upon your return you will find yourself at a grave in the Barrens. Which makes me super curious just how many random return locations one could find, should someone be so inclined to poke around where they probably shouldn't.

It's possible to cheese this a bit and use it like a super-hearthstone.

Say you're doing some archaeology or pet battles in Kalimdor on your Monk alt, but guildies want you to run old raids with them for transmog gear. Sounds like fun, but it'd sure be a pain to go all the way back to Kalimdor when you're done. Zen Pilgrimage provides a solution, here's what you do:

Go to the Peak of Serenity, but then do not cast Zen Pilgrimage: Return. Use your hearthstone instead, wherever that may take you, and then head off to your destination. You will still have the buff that recorded your original location, so once you're done use Zen Pilgrimage: Return and bam, suddenly you're back where you started (well, at the closest graveyard anyway).

It's amazing.

If you fly out at level 90, or a player with a two-person mount carries you out of the Peak, the game will "forget" you used Zen Pilgrimage to get there, and instead think you got to Kun-Lai normally. You will not be able to use Zen Pilgrimage: Return to return. Instead, you will get the regular ZP, on its 30-minute cooldown.

WTF, it seems they have removed the Zen pilgrimage: Return so now the tool tip says use this same spell to return, but its on a friggin 30 min cd. Am I missing something here? This can't possibly be right, like who takes 30 min to finish the daily, so what do they expect people to do, just wait around for the 30 min cd to finish?

edit: I think this may be a glitch, it has been happening to my monk a lot though, and from what I have read in the forums, other people are experiencing this same glitch : /

I personally find this spell to be an unpleasant mix of good, and infuriating @$@#$@*&! The first time I used it, it worked fine. Now, every time I use it, it first ports me to a random graveyard, and then I have to use it again to get to the peak. After I'm done it takes me back to the same random graveyard as before, and then I have to hearth back, and continue what I was doing. Very. Frustrating.

Take today for example, I had flown back to SW for something and logged out. I log in later, and haven't done the peak daily yet, so I hit it. It sends me to the SW graveyard, and puts the spell on a 20 min CD. WTF?

I would conclude that the spell is still bugged.

Are you a Monk far from home and need a quick run back to town? Combining Zen Pilgrimage, Hearthstone and Zen Pilgrimage: Return will let you zip back to town, get trained, hit the Bank or Auction House and return to the middle of nowhere faster than any other class, including teleporting mages, can. Here's how it works:

Go to your favorite capital city and make one if its inns your home e.g. Undercity
Now, make your way out into the boondocks via normal running, teleporting, riding means e.g. Uldaman
After questing or whatever in that far, far away zone, when you need to run back to town, cast Zen Pilgrimage to take you to the Peak of Serenity
Optional: Do the daily training quest if you want to pick up the Enlightenment buff
Use your Hearthstone spell to return to town to complete your errands
When you're done in town, use Zen Pilgrimage: Return to return to the graveyard nearest your original departure point

This beats long distance flights in my opinion. I also use it to quickly jump continents on my lower level monk so I don't have to wait for dirigibles to show up.

Best way to use this spell:

1) Set your hearth on the opposite continent from your faction's main city.
2) Zen Pilgrimage
3) There are portals on KLS leading to your faction's main city.

Now you can get to either continent with ease; use the spell when you need to get to your faction's main city, and your hearth when you need to get to the other continent.

You can also use this trick to get back and forth from the main continents and Outland/Northrend. Simply set your hearth in one of these two places, use ZP to get to your faction city and hearth to get back.

Just as a side note, when you return you will be at the graveyard nearest to where you Pilgrimaged from. Example: If I used this spell in the Trade District AH, when I used Zen Pilgrimage: Return I would be in the Cemetery.

My Zen Pilgrimage keeps taking me back to Silithus then Peak of Serenity then back to Silithus but I used it in Borean Tundra any idea why?

I'm wondering is this spell was modified recently. I used to be able to Zen Pilgrimage, take the portal to Org, buy/sell and Zen Pilgrimage: Return back to where I started. Starting yesterday, as soon as I take the portal, the Return option is gone, and the Zen Pilgrimage cooldown is reset to 30min. Anyone else seeing this?

Zen Pilgrimage can be used to make a poor (low level) Monk some money, because fishing at the Peak of Serenity yield Golden Carp and Tiger Gourami can be found in schools. Golden Carp and Tiger Gourami both sell for 25 silver a piece.

If you use this spell in a place you want to come back to a bit later, go take the portal to orgrimmar / stormwind, then go wherever you want and once you've finished, just use return and go do whatever in the place you wanted to go back to.

Has Zen Pilgrimage been changed? I've been using ZP throughout my time leveling my Monk to zip back to Orgrimmar, and the Return buff has always persisted when I used the portal to get to Org. However, it's been acting differently the last day or two--which is incidentally since I got my Monk to Pandaria, so maybe the spell is acting differently because of that. Now, going to Org is canceling the Return buff, and Zen Pilgrimage is showing up on cooldown on my bar instead of Zen Pilgrimage: Return.

You cannot use Zen Pilgrimage on the Wandering Island starter zone, doing so will give you the message "You are in the wrong zone".

Currently Zen Pilgrimage is pretty bugged. Every first time I use it each day, it transports me to Nightsong Woods, Ashenvale. I haven't played my monk in months, but I do remember that it didn't do this back then. The second attempt will take me to Peak of Serenity, though. But because my first try puts me in Ashenvale, the return spell will send me back there too. This way I can never return to where I was when I originally used Zen Pilgrimage.

I haven't tried a third attempt, who knows where I'll end up!

I wanted to do trick so I could catch some pets wandering around the Peak but it failed:

Used the ZP
Got quest for training so I could fight and take damage
Was defeated and stood in the fire area after fight (there is an absorbing shield, but it can end before the fire ends)
Of course that led to death
Now I could leave the "safe area" as a ghost without teleport getting warning
Also ZP:R disappeared and I had ZP again
Respawned and tried to leave the safe area
Teleport still existed
Took ZP and after that took ZP:R
Music was different, proper to the zone seen as Pandaria player, but teleport still existed

So don't waste your time trying this. ;]

But AFAIR you can still use hearth or portal to Stormwind/Orgrimmar without disappearing ZP:R. I'm not sure: what if you die here?

This ability and the reward buff from the quest hasn't been changed for Warlords of Draenor. You will still get the mastery buff, not the XP buff if you are lvl 90

With the pre-patch, Zen Pilgrimage is now only on 1 minute cooldown, which means it's a perfect ability to use for any farming that involves dungeons! Just finish your dungeon, use the ability twice and get ported right next to the exit!

Once you begin Legion content and this spell is re-routed to the Temple of Five Dawns (monk order hall) on the Wandering Isle, it stops functioning the way most of these older comments are talking about; using a portal or hearthstone will erase your return marker (you can still use it to return to a dungeon entrance or take care of order hall business, of course).

Despite the disadvantage, it is admittedly less confusing since you never have to remember where you were, and more importantly this puts you within walking distance of some portal hubs with a negligible cooldown. There is a portal to the Peak of Serenity at 50.0 54.4 which can get you to Stormwind/Orgrimmar in a jiffy,* and a portal to Broken Isles Dalaran at 52.4 57.1 which itself has multiple portals in your faction's camp and in the center of town (Chamber of the Guardian).

* In 7.2, the Peak of Serenity is in a phase without any NPCs or portals. I will leave this statement as-is in hopes that this functionality will be restored, but I may remove it at a later time if, as I fear, it won’t. It is still useful to know when you want to get to northerly parts of Pandaria (Isle of Giants, Sha of Anger, Shado-Pan dailies).

Your Hearthstone may shave a minute or so off all this, as can your Dalaran Hearthstone. But now you can just as easily set it to a quest hub or somewhere else really out of the way (such as near a dungeon you’re farming long-term) without losing much convenience.

Im not sure what the problems is but at least as of today it is broken and wont let you leave the wandering isle. in order to leave you must either a hearthstone (or similar item), use the portal for new Dalaran or the portal for The Peak of Serenity.

As a new pandaren, if you try to use this while you're still leveling on the Wandering Isle, it will say "You can not use this here." Ah well.

Flying in Pandaria is now available at level 60 with the old Wisdom of the Four Winds flying being baked into baseline flying, so you can fly around the temple. But you still can't fly out and set your Hearthstone to your Shrine, you get teleported back in to the temple before level 85.

FYI, The Wandering Isle has a portal 1/2 way down the steps on the right, to the Peak of Serenity. Coords 50 55 if needed. (Cred: Mydge)

I got tricked into doing the legion thing that changed it to the turtle place.
I prefer the kun-lai temple for faster access to a stormwind/orgrimmar portal.
Any way to revert it?
