For my broad strokes build (http://www.wowhead.com/talent-calc/mage/fire/MW1z), not only is the Flame On talent going to be hard pressed to be worth anything because this does the same thing as Fire Blast, but you're free to stack haste and mastery instead of crit and whatever as well because haste gives fireball guaranteed criticals, igniting the hot streak. It's possible I'll be able to replace Flame On with Controlled Burn, and spread close to the ideal 10% more flame patches.

I drew some circles and deleted an even lengthier paragraph explaining how to use each talent, controlled burn and flame on. Basically, if you use flame on it's better to only use your guaranteed crits (Fire Blast, Phoenix Flame) to actualize a naturally occurring stage one hot streak. Your exception is this: you want to level fishing. You have poor foresight and don't do it on your death knight. Shame on you, now you have to kill things while fishing. If you like to double up on the Hot Streak charges, you'll want to go with Controlled Burn. What it does is make you have all of your 10% more charges at the same time short of passing up on hot streaks, and makes it more worthwhile to artificially trigger hot streaks since they have a chance to be twice as effective. If you use Controlled Burn, consider stacking haste and crit to increase the number of stage one hot streaks you see, whereas for Flame On, I would go Haste and Mastery since half of your crits happen from 4-5 fireballs and the other half comes from fire blast and phoenix fire. Mastery increases the effectiveness of any damage you deal, and you're going to need to make up for lower burst potential.

Since I decided already to stack haste and mastery I'll only be talking about the Flame On talent with haste and mastery.

... and this is the first flippin' artifact knowledge that you get just for stepping out of the garrison for the first time since warlords, plus the ability A Phoenix Reborn, a passive combat catalyst for this exact ability which *also* benefits from both haste and mastery. By the time you'll have access to they you'll not even be close to end game on your mage yet.

The same branch that gives you A Phoenix Reborn puts you partway into getting Fire at Will which further magnifies the impact of haste on fireball crits. Maxing this talent and stacking all three relics apparently reduces the cast time of Fireball by a total of 18%, but the mechanics for the relics might be different from what wowhead knows, or will change at or soon after the launch of Legion. Fire at will also is on your way to gaining Aftershocks, which will make any flame patch nerd such as myself smile.

The reason it's better to go after A Phoenix reborn before Fire at Will and subsequently Aftershocks is that flame patch does damage not from a fireball crit, but from a Fire Blast crit to follow the fireball. You will inevitably get more fireball crits than fireblast and phoenixfire crits, until you spec into getting phoenixfire up more often with A Phoenix Reborn. Because Aftershocks and A Phoenix Reborn are opposing talents, even though they synergize well, having both will be one of the last things to happen.

With these artifact knowledges done the only throwaways left is Scorched Earth which makes casting scorch boost movement a little, and Pyretic Incantation, which makes consecutive crits make your following crits a little more powerful. (This would only really be useful in Diablo with Broken Promises, as well as game breaking :P) Each of these only have one level, after which you'll be able to start plucking away feebly at the 20 empowerment levels for your artifact.

As to the legendary item, given access to all of them I would choose Sephuz's Secret for use with Dragon's Breath. This effectively makes Dragon's Breath into a less effective Time Warp for yourself if it disorients a target. This makes you get Phoenix Flames charges back faster because of A Phoenix Reborn. In solo applications you can use it as a combat break followed by an inherent burst to kill a target quickly when you're dying. From what I'm told, legion legendaries are most likely going to be disabled in pvp combat.

Whelp I guess I'll push submit so someone else can see my dark secrets regarding fire mages in legion. If you're seeing this, touch the screen with a healthstone to bind yourself to the all mighty Heart of the Phoenix.

I feel like this should be castable while casting like Fire Blast.

Did this used to have an Ashes of Alar model? I swear I've seen a firemage throw a tiny Ashes model, but the one I'm throwing now (just got Felomelorn 2 days ago) is not the same model.

I hope someone who's played fire longer can help me out here.

Edit: found it. Not related to this at all! So feel free to downvote, but I'm leaving this here in case anyone else was wondering. It's this proc Item - Mage T18 Fire 2P Bonus

Off the tier 18 set like TagofFire said.

Why does the AoE not work on legacy mobs. MoP and below.

Пламя феникса is the spell you are looking for. You're welcome.

If checking changes into Shadowlands I can save you the trouble. Phoenix Flames used to guarantee a crit - for our awesome instant Pyros. Could be used as necessary to force that (but not too much as damage was low - just to get the crit when really needed).

In Shadowlands - no longer a guaranteed crit but damage was buffed a lot. I suppose to give us more AoE but it remains that our three charges of Phoenix Flames now cannot force our big big hitter - the instant Pyros. Overall a huge DPS loss.

this spell is considered aoe damage and not direct damage, so explosive orbs from the Взрывоопасный affix are immune to this damage
