Holy Cow 30 Minute Hearthstone Cooldowns
This is a short post but I had to bring this up.
According to the legendary Eyonix, 3.1.0 will be removing the ability to "ghetto hearth" using instance groups. But it will
also
be changing the cooldown on hearthstones to 30 minutes.
The World (of Warcraft) changes again.
I will tell you what, guys. I'll bring this up with the designers. Though the hearthstone is reasonable, since many of you have become used to "ghetto hearth" style travel, it may be deemed an appropriate change.
I can make no promises.
Update: Alright, all -- we're going to make the cooldown on hearthstones 30 minutes when 3.1.0 releases. Enjoy your sweet victory.
Thanks to those who provided feedback constructively.

The Secret Dungeon!
So by now I can imagine just about everyone has seen the preview for the new Ulduar raid dungeon.
If you haven't, you can find it here:
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/ulduar.xml
Once again Blizzard provides us with a walking tour of some of their most epic locations. It's beautiful work, and I'm really excited to see it in action—one of the things that I especially like about World of Warcraft is the architecture, and the Titan architecture is my favorite of all.
What really blows my mind about all this, though, is how good Blizzard is at keeping secrets.

Dual Spec Changes
More news from the blues! This time, blue poster Zarhym has announced (inadvertently?) some changes to the dual-spec system.
Characters level 40 and up may now use the dual-spec system.
The cost to activate the ability is .
The ability no longer requires a Lexicon of Power.
Switching specs has a 5-second cast time. It may not be used in combat, or in battlegrounds or arenas.
There is no cooldown on switching specs.
Good news for casual players, or those looking to do instances while leveling up! The original text of the posts, and links to the sources, are after the break.

on the PTRs!
We have a very special
Patch Notes
page all prettied up with links, colors and tooltips, just for you! Check it out here:

This one has got some ESPECIALLY interesting changes. Not only do we have a brand new Gear Planner tool, we see the long-awaited implementation of the Dual Spec feature. There are also apparently some tweaks to the quest tracking system I'm interested to see—and mounts (or at least non-flying mounts) no longer vanish when they get wet!
Combine all of this with the class specific changes (Trap Launchers, anyone?) and I think we've got a hell of a patch coming up. Comments, questions, and thoughts are welcome!
PS: We are working round the clock to get all the new items and data up on the site for your perusal. Your new talent calculators should be ready shortly!

EDIT:
Okay apparently I'm not as funny as I think I am, so I'm co-opting this post to turn it into an announcement of some information that's
actually
interesting. Apparently the next patch, on top of the addition of our oh-so-heavily-anticipated raid content, is
also
featuring a brand
new world event

Player vs. Street
I never got particularly into fighting games. Until fairly recently, I could never pull off any of the special moves with any amount of regularity, let alone ridiculously complicated combos, and without being able to do the move you want to do, suddenly you're not competing against the person you're sitting next to or against a computer, you're competing against your own hand eye coordination. I'm not down on personal tests of hand eye coordination, but I generally dislike situations in which I'm faced with a challenge that I need to surpass to even be able to compete on the same level as someone else.
That's why I'm so excited about Street Fighter 4. According to my brief experiences playing it (it only was released for consoles on the 17th), and what I've read about it, it seems like they're trying to move away from complicated special moves and combos, and towards predicting what the opponent is going to do, and reacting to it before they can do it.
I guess what I'm really trying to say here is that I don't particularly like PvP.

That Darn Furbolg
Some 10,000 years ago
Krasus
, revered mage of the
Kirin Tor
and a member of The Six who oversee
Dalaran
, negotiated an alliance between earthen, tauren, night elves, and a mysterious bear-man race who supposedly originated in
Northrend
. The alliance proved successful against the Burning Legion for the time being. Over the years these bear-men, given the term furbolg, befriended the night elves and tauren. The night elves found nurturing allies in the furbolg as they were invaluable for their knowledge of the moonlit forests. However, the Burning Legion would not let this truce go unhindered for long.
Our blog entry today deals with the furbolg. I bet a lot of you have seen them in-game, whether you recognized them or not. Through time, I have learned to appreciate some of the finer points of lore and I think these creatures are simply fascinating. Some of you may be curious about what a furbolg is and why exactly I am obsessed with them. Well, who cares!

Official Blizzard Update: BlizzCon, Ulduar, and more
Once again, our friends at Blizzard have sent us a little note asking us to mention a few of their big announcements this week...and boy, there have been some big ones.
We have three different big announcements this week:
BlizzCon 2009 has been announced, and tickets will be available soon!
The 2009 World of Warcraft Arena Tournament is now open for registration!
The Ulduar sneak peek we linked
yesterday
is now up on the US site!
Check after the break for the official Blizzard announcements. :)

Ulduar Preview!
No matter whether you're Blizzard's number one fanboi, or you think they're the worst bunch of screwups you've ever paid $15 a month to—one thing can always be said for Blizzard: They know how to keep a secret. I fully intend to come up with a whole blog on this subject later.
So naturally, when Blizzard releases some info, all of us jump at the chance to go over it with a fine tooth comb. Let's get cracking, shall we? :D

Creating Good Forum Topic Titles
We have a large community here at Wowhead and ever since the introduction of our forums there has been a large amount of threads which all share one thing in common: "Help me, please!" Many users looking for help at other sites are often left feeling lost, but thanks to our great community of users (and obviously our staff), we like to think most of you actually do receive the help you need—whether it's in the form of a direct answer or simply being pointed in the right direction. In this entry, my goal is to help lead users away from vague "Help me!" titles and towards more specific requests, so they can get the help they're looking for.

Wowhead Comic #11
It's been a couple of weeks since I've had the time to make a comic, but here's a nice simple one.
(
Flirt with Disaster
)
I enjoyed making this one, I do love those dresses!
I had a moment of stupidity with this achievement, I just couldn't get it to work!... Then of course I realised I had no perfume on my toon. So yay, wasted petals. SIGH. Oh well!
Either way, I hope you all enjoyed this year's Valentine's event. I didn't have the time to get many of the fun achievements done, I'll certainly be envious of those of you with the
Love Fool
title!
Til next week. xx
And of course, here is the
horde equivalent

Dear Wowhead... (Episode 7)
Welcome back, dear readers! My sincere thanks for the flood of letters I received this week. I'm looking forward to answering as many as I can!
Dear Wowhead,
My father lost his job and we moved to Kharanos in Dun Morogh where he found a job as an engineer. Normally this is a good thing, but I'm a human and all the Dwarves and Gnomes live there. I also have to go to a previously all dwarf and gnome private school so I can take classes in engineering.
I always get picked on in class, the gnomes keep calling me tall and the dwarves always call me sober. The lunches there are disgusting, they serve Darkmoon Special Reserve Surprise Monday - Thursday, and we have Mechanical Squirrel Soup Fridays. I just can't fit in at this school. I need your help!!!!
Signed,
Lonely in Kharanos

Jeff Kaplan Now Working On Mystery MMO
So it looks like Game Director Jeff "Tigole" Kaplan has switched projects—he's now working on Blizzard's unannounced, upcoming "next-gen MMO". Check out the announcement:
I wanted to take a moment to let the community know that I’ve switched roles here at Blizzard to work on our upcoming, unannounced MMO. World of Warcraft has been such a central part of my life these past six and a half years, and it’s success would not have been possible without the tremendous community around it, so I wanted to say thank you to all our players who’ve shared this amazing experience with us so far. Also, while I have served as the spokesperson and Game Director for World of Warcraft on Wrath of the Lich King, by no means would WoW be where it is today without the dedicated team that we have in place. The WoW development team is comprised of some of the most talented and experienced game developers in the world, and it was an absolute honor to serve amongst them, and they will continue to make WoW better than ever. I still plan to be very involved with the future course of World of Warcraft, but will leave the day

The Ice Stone Has Melted!
There appears to be a bug on live realms—or at least, any live server that's running the "
Love Is In The Air
" event. Apparently people are getting spammed with a world event emote, saying "The Ice Stone Has Melted".
WoWWiki
indicates that the "Ice Stone" has something to do with the Midsummer Event, so this appears to be a simple bug.
There's a
blue post
on the official forums which indicates it's being looked into. We'll update this post when more info get's posted. :)
Edit:
Another blue post on the issue

Edit Again:

posted

Patch 3.0.9 Released! (Also Official Venting Location)
Edit: Maintenance extended another two hours, until 1pm PST. Who's surprised? :)
Server down? Having trouble patching? Hate the changes they made to your class? Have a rash on your feet that just won't go away, and you're waiting for Blizzard to send you some ointment? Well, here's the place to tell us about it. And if the servers just come back up without issue, then...well then we'll just let this thread die. :)
Especially interesting about this patch is the official patch notes, which can be found here:
