As we prepare for next week's 10.0 announcement, we thought it would be worthwhile to go over our Shadowlands interactions with Ysera and the Green Dragonflight - for
no particular reason other than we just like dragons
.
Ysera's Afterlife
After her death in Legion, Ysera's soul was sent to Ardenweald where she rested within a Wildseed. Usually containing the spirits of Wild Gods, wildseeds are tended by the denizens of Ardenweald until they are ready to be reborn. Once the anima drought began, Ardenweald's groves started to wither and die, and many wildseeds were lost or else sacrificed for their anima -
such as that of Ursoc
.
Though her wildseed remained safe, Ysera's rest was disturbed, her dreams plagued by nightmares. Soon after we arrived in Ardenweald, these nightmares grew so strong, they manifested around the young wildseed - and in the story chapter Visions of the Dreamer, we saw exactly the dreams and memories that troubled the former Dragon Aspect.

Ysera's Anxieties
Many of Ysera's anxieties manifest during this quest, taking on hostile dragon forms: Desertion, Uselessness, Failure, The Unknown, Corruption, Weakness, Extinction, and, looming larger than the others, Azeroth's Demise.
Some of these fears could easily relate to the Dragon Aspects losing their power - an event that occured at the end of Cataclysm. That would surely invoke a fear of the unknown, uselessness, weakness, and even extinction. And with the Dragon Aspects no longer around to protect it, Ysera must surely fear for Azeroth itself.
Ysera has more than enough reason to fear the corrupting influence of the Old Gods - not only did she fall to it herself before death, but she has seen many of her loved ones - even a fellow Dragon Aspect - fall to it as well.
The Student and the Dear Friend
Along with the dreams that manifest as concepts, several of Ysera's dreams manifest as recognizable characters - though they are presented as how they relate to Ysera herself.
The Student and Dear Friend standing together, for example, are instantly recognizable as Malfurion Stormrage and Tyrande Whisperwind.
Before her death, Ysera was corrupted by the satyr Xavius, who then used her to attack the Temple of Elune. Xavius had also kidnapped Malfurion - taking him into the Nightmare - but with the attack on the temple, he forced Tyrande to choose between her husband or her goddess.

My beloved made the right choice, when she tried to save you. I grieve for the way it ended.
The Dream will never be the same.
Tyrande chose Elune, but she was unable to save Ysera - and was forced to kill her instead.

My friend... I mourn your loss, and the part that I had to play in it.
I hope that this is not the end.
The Daugther and Adopted Son
Ysera's Adopted Son is the Wild God Cenarius, the patron of Druids. When his birth sent a ripple through the Emerald Dream, Ysera took an interest in him right away, and it was she who taught him the secrets of the Dream.
You were the mother that walked the path of the dream with me. You taught me so much.
The world needs you.
The Daughter is Merithra, who took up leadership of the Green Dragonflight after her mother's death. It seems she is struggling to believe she can live up to her mother's legacy - something that we can't help but feel might become significant. After all, if the Green Dragonflight is to play a major role in 10.0, it will need a strong leader - one who is confident in her position.
Mother, if only you were here with me. Our kin still have hope, but we struggle without you.
I need your guidance.
The Consort
Ysera's Consort is Eranikus, who died sacrificing himself in the War Against the Nightmare. In life, Eranikus was corrupted by Emerald Nightmare, but Tyrande Whisperwind was eventually able to use the powers of Elune to cleanse him. Though he was cleansed, Eranikus never quite seemed the same, and he feared falling to the Nightmare again.
In a final confrontation with Lethon, one of the Dragons of Nightmare, Eranikus started to become corrupted, but he managed to shift himself and Lethon into the unstable boundary between the Emerald Dream and Azeroth - killing them both.
I miss you, my love.
We will be together again in the Dream, one day.
The Worldbreaker
One of the memories that seems to haunt Ysera the most is that of the Worldbreaker - or Deathwing. Once a fellow Dragon Aspect, Deathwing was Neltharion the Earth-Warder, leader of the Black Dragonflight, before he fell to the corrupting influence of the Old Gods.
Dreamweaver says: A dear friend's betrayal... a pain that never fades...
During the War of the Ancients, Deathwing convinced the other Dragon Aspects to each give a portion of their power to a weapon called the Dragon Soul - later the Demon Soul - which he then turned on his allies in a horrifying betrayal. Later, Deathwing would teach the Dragonmaw clan how to use the Demon Soul against Alexstrasza, Aspect of the Red Dragonflight - directly causing her enslavement by the Orcs during the Second War.
Finally, Malygos, Ysera, and Nozdormu helped in an attack against Deathwing. Though at first it did not seem they would be able to prevail due to the power of the Dragon Soul, the human mage Rhonin managed to destroy the weapon, releasing the powers of the Aspects back into themselves. Alexstrasza was freed, and Deathwing was forced to go into hiding.
Ysera of Ardenweald
Not long after we soothe Ysera's dreams, her wildseed is fatally damaged by the invading Drust - at first all seems lost, until the Winter Queen agrees to spend some of her own anima to save her.
The Story of Ardenweald - Awaken the Dreamer
There is only one catch - as she has been reborn into Ardenweald, Ysera is forever bound to that realm. She will never return to Azeroth, and those who she left behind - like her daughter, Merithra - will need to see to the future of the Green Dragonflight without her.
Gone, But Not Forgotten
During the Night Fae covenant campaign, Ysera sends players to visit Alexstrasza, to ask her for a token of lost love for use in a ritual to save a former Night Warrior from a deadly curse. Ysera expects Alexstrasza to send a token of her former consort Korialstrasz, who died during the war with Deathwing, but Alexstrasza sends

The Story of the Night Fae - Night Warrior's Curse
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Ysera... it brightens my heart to know her death was not an end, but a new beginning.
Alexstrasza takes a moment.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: We were sisters hatched from the same clutch. Inseparable since birth.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: Ysera speaks of Korialstrasz, whom I loved dearly... but I loved none more than her.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: She gave me a gift when we first became Aspects. Take it with you, and save your friend.
Alexstrasza conjures a chest.
Alexstrasza the Life-Binder says: And Champion... please tell my sister that she is sorely missed, fondly remembered and deeply loved.
The token, given by Ysera to Alexstrasza when they became Dragon Aspects, is yet another important callback to the Dragonflights and the Aspects who lead them. Though Ysera may be gone from Azeroth, it is unlikely she will soon become forgotten.
This figurine... I have not seen it since...
I gave this to her when we first became Aspects. Our duties would draw us apart for the first time in our lives. To know that she has kept it all this time...
<Ysera wipes her eyes.>
We will put it to good use.
In the same way, though the Dragon Aspects may not have the power they once did, their former roles as Azeroth's protectors cannot quite be forgotten. As 10.0 nudges nearer and nearer, we can only wonder what lies ahead.
