Tense Conversation Between Greymane and Lor'themar in Shadowlands Epilogue

Following the events of the
Shadowlands epilogue
, Greymane and Lor'themar have a tense conversation showing that some old faction wounds still remain after Sylvanas' judgment.
Story Spoilers Ahead.
Lor'themar: Well met, King Greymane.
Greymane says: Regent Lord.
Lor'themar: I hope the fate of Sylvanas Windrunner brings the Alliance some measure of peace.
Greymane says: Peace? You stand in the Shadowlands, Regent Lord. Ask the dead she sent here whether they feel peace.
Greymane says: As for me, that's something I will never know. Not while the monster who killed my son still endures.
Lor'themar: I understand. My people are haunted by the deeds of monsters as well.
Greymane says: And what of you? Are you hoping that the ranger-general you served comes back from the Maw? Or would you prefer having your warchief again?
Lor'themar: I spent most of my life alongside the Windrunner family. Sylvanas was my hero... and my friend. But the banshee who nearly led the Horde to ruin was neither.
Greymane says: Then you shouldn't have followed her commands. Good day, Regent Lord.
Lor'themar: Good day, King Greymane.
While Lor'themar is optimistic that Sylvanas' harsh sentence will bring some degree of peace to the Alliance, Greymane is having none of it. In addition to losing his son at the hands of Sylvanas, Greymane's people have twice lost their homes to her invasions--Gilneas and Darnassus. Greymane also asks a question for which Lor'themar has no good answer--while some leaders of the Horde are quick to criticize Sylvanas now, why did they follow her orders in the past?
In a separate dialogue during the Shadowlands epilogue, Lor'themar privately expresses guilt over the role he played in passively enabling Sylvanas:
We sin'dorei are no strangers to suffering and tragedy. I have seen my people massacred, my kingdom razed, and all I revere defiled.
When Silvermoon at last rejoined the world, it was Sylvanas who extended her hand and welcomed us into the Horde.
Those days are long behind us now. The devastation and loss inflicted upon Azeroth by the Banshee Queen is nigh incalculable.
The knowledge that I stood by while so much of it happened still haunts me. Perhaps, in the end, judgment will come for me as well.
Greymane's distrust echoes the sentiments of some parts of the Alliance following the conclusion of the Fourth War. While some citizens of Azeroth were happy to move on, those directly wronged by Sylvanas were hesitant. In
Alliance dialogue following the Fourth War
, we see that 7th Legion Marines, Night Elf Sentinels, and Stormwind City Guards all express dissatisfaction with the conclusion of Battle for Azeroth:
Stormwind City Guard: You think the rest of the Horde is blameless? They're just as guilty as she is. I say we fight until the end.
7th Legion Marine: They'll need it. These ceasefires with the Horde... they never last.
Night Elf Sentinel: All this talk of the war winding down... Sylvanas is still out there. Have they all forgotten what she did?
While Tyrande's judgment of Sylvanas in the Shadowlands epilogue indicates she has moved beyond pure vengeance, as her sentencing focuses on renewal for souls in the Maw instead of bloodshed, her
closing epilogue dialogue
also indicates lingering distrust with the Horde.
Tyrande: The Horde inflicted a grievous wound upon my people, <player>. You may never earn my trust... but you have my thanks for setting things right.
Looking towards the future, it's very likely Anduin will not be ruling the Alliance in 10.0 as he
tells Greymane he wants to remain behind in Shadowlands
for a bit, and the
Sylvanas
novel strongly implies he later joins her in the Maw. In his conversation with Greymane, Anduin indicates that Turalyon will continue to rule in his absence:
Anduin: Turalyon will keep the Alliance safe in my absence. And I know you'll watch over everyone we care about... Old Wolf.
Turalyon is less of a pacifist than Anduin, and his
Stormwind Throne Room Dialogue
indicates he's keen on rebuilding the military and retaking lands:
The Fourth War took a terrible toll on the Alliance. Our military might has been depleted. Stormwind's nobles are keen to see our defenses restored.
Reclaiming Stromgarde was a good first step. Perhaps there are other holdings of the old Alliance that could be secured.
With Greymane, Turalyon, and Tyrande all distrustful of the Horde, and Anduin now out of the picture, the future of the Alliance may shift in Patch 10.0.
