Eleven years ago, June 28, 2011, World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Patch 4.2: Rage of the Firelands was released. A new raid, new dailies, a Legendary weapon, a classic villain; this just might have been the perfect patch!
Across the breadth of Azeroth, the Horde and the Alliance have dealt crushing blows to Deathwing's elemental minions and fanatic Twilight's Hammer cultists. Through it all, the Earthen Ring has never wavered from its tireless charge, holding Azeroth itself together amid the tidal fury and errant magical energies that churn at the Maelstrom. Yet as the elements continue their chaotic upheaval, it seems that the noble shamanic order might finally be on the verge of breaking beneath the great weight that rests on its shoulders. Even Thrall, for all of his wisdom and skill, has grown aggravated by his failure to effectively communicate with Azeroth's elements. Recently, his calls were acknowledged, but the malevolent entity that responded has only intensified Thrall's fears and doubts....
New Raid: Firelands
The time to strike at Ragnaros draws near. The battle to protect Mount Hyjal now rages in the depths of Ragnaros's smoldering realm. As territory is gained by Azeroth's defenders and they draw closer to the inner sanctums of the Firelands, a monumental task awaits. Ragnaros's lair--Sulfuron Keep--is closely guarded by his most loyal servants, including the traitorous Druids of the Flame and their mysterious leader. Yet the brave heroes who have ventured into this ash-choked domain cannot afford to shy away from any danger. The outcome of the battles that lie ahead will determine the very survival of Azeroth.
Огненные Просторы
was an epic, 7 boss, predominantly outdoor raid. The non-linear design allowed raid teams to tackle many of the bosses in the order that appealed to them. Accessibility to a plethora of trash mobs that had the potential to drop bind on equip gear led to BoE farm groups that allowed even non-raiders a chance to see the magnificent and terrifying landscape of this gorgeous raid.
Шэннокс
Повелитель Риолит
Бет'тилак
Алисразор
Бейлрок
Мажордом Фэндрал Олений Шлем
Рагнарос
The innovative boss mechanics along with drops like the
Пламенная коса Фэндрала
that gave Druids the "Firekitty" form made this a truly memorable instance.
New Quest Hub: The Regrowth and Molten Front
Although the night elves and their allies repelled Ragnaros's initial invasion of Hyjal, their work on the sacred mount is far from over. Archdruid Malfurion Stormrage has gathered his comrades at the Sanctuary of Malorne within the newly healed Regrowth to invade Ragnaros's domain: the Firelands. Once inside the Elemental Plane, Hyjal's defenders hope to establish a permanent stronghold. Yet these plans have come under threat by a ferocious new elemental assault that has swept through the Regrowth. Despite this setback, Hyjal's protectors remain steadfast in their mission, for they know that it is in the molten heart of the Firelands that the fate of Mount Hyjal will be decided.
A new quest hub, the Regrowth, allowed players to complete dailies and work towards opening the quest zone, the
Огненная передовая
. In addition to dailies and the Firelands aesthetic, the Molten Front allowed access to unique and rare hunter tames as well as vendors who sold collectible items in addition to gear.
Along with generic tames, lucky hunters could come across named tamable mobs including
Скарр
,
Каркин
,
Кирикс
,
Соликс
,
Мер'тилак
,
Жарисс
, and
Антрисс
.
New Legendary Weapon: Dragonwrath, Tarecgosa's Rest
Uncertainty looms over the blue dragonflight's domain, the Nexus, as its members struggle to appoint a new leader. Split between the two likeliest successors--Kalecgos and Arygos--the flight has agreed to meet during a rare celestial event known as the Embrace in the hopes that a new Aspect will finally be chosen. The bronze dragon Anachronos, however, has detected something sinister at work around the Nexus, threatening to compromise the ceremony. If a hero does not rise to investigate these dark forces and uncover their intentions, Anachronos believes that Azeroth's doom is imminent.
Firelands also allowed access to the questline to acquire the Legendary staff,
Гнев Дракона, вечный покой Таресгосы
. Co-operative play to collect quest items, followed by a challenging solo questline earned casters accolades in their faction capital and a unique blue dragon flight form along with the powerful weapon.
New Love: Collectors Items
Patch 4.2 gave collectors an unprecedented amount of love. This was before Toys and Battle Pets, but Vanity Items and Non-combat pets, the precursors of these systems, were available and have since been converted for the new systems. Mounts and gear that gave the wearer unique special effects were also available. These items were drops, achievement awards, quest rewards, PvP rewards, or purchasable from in-game vendors. If you are a collector, opening the Molten Front to get access to the vendors is worthwhile.

Of course, every patch has more than just the highly visible elements. A few notable items for Patch 4.2 included:
New User Interface Feature: Dungeon Journal
Burning Crusade included with the base game
10-day Free Trial replaced with the unlimited-duration Starter Edition
Keyring removed and keys made obsolete
Patch 4.2: Rage of the Firelands was an epic patch. Firelands was gorgeous and intimidating, if very orange. Ragnaros was an appropriately updated classic bad guy. While one could have grown very weary with all of the dailies, there was certainly plenty to do in this penultimate Cataclysm patch.
