Most Popular Classes and Specs in Raids - Analyzing Player Representation from WoD through BfA

Today we'd like to highlight a data collection made by
Babylonius
using the raw data provided by
Warcraft Logs
to look at overall class popularity for DPS players in raiding for the past three expansions.
The data below only uses information from DPS specs, so Healing and Tank balance doesn't play a role in changes in popularity. The class representation data was compiled by our Windwalker Class Writer,
Babylonius
, by using historical
Warcraft Logs
data. You can see the full set of data
here
Class Representation in Heroic Raiding
First, we will take a look at the representation in Heroic raiding. Heroic is an important metric to look at when talking about raiding because it encompasses a less restrictive scenario compared to Mythic while still having a population more observant of day-to-day balance compared to Normal.

Class Representation in Mythic Raiding
Now, if we look at representation in Mythic raiding, you can see slight, but obvious changes in representation. Specs and Classes get increased more clearly by balance changes (which we will take a look at in a minute), created by players that will play whatever spec or class is the best for the tier or even per-encounter based.

How Balance Influences Class Popularity
Overall looking at balance influence, overall we see that while it has some influence, each class has at least a core of players that won't leave their class and will still play regardless of it, as expected. We can see this with Windwalker Monks for instance, which reached their lowest popularity in
Tomb of Sargeras, being the second worst class balance-wise
while still retaining 1.32% of the Mythic playerbase and 1.96% of Heroic. Their peak was reached in
Antorus, when Monks were basically tied for 2nd place as far as DPS go
, with 6.17% representation in Heroic and 5.81% in Mythic.
Other phenomena we can observe from looking at
other charts available in the dataset
is how while many players are loyal to a class, most of them don't have issues swapping specs to whatever is the strongest of the bunch. This might be also linked to the fact that it is easier to just swap spec while swapping classes can be difficult depending on borrowed mechanics from each expansion.
A good example of this behavior is Mage. Throughout Battle for Azeroth, you can see that the mage population remained somewhat constant on Heroic, the Spec distribution changed significantly based on what was best in
Uldir
,
Battle of Dazar'alor
,
Eternal Palace
, and
Ny'alotha
.
