Mobile Games at BlizzCon - Should We Expect New Mobile Game Announcements? (Speculation)

With BlizzCon creeping around the corner, we've decided to talk more about speculations about what may come in the highly anticipated BlizzCon 2019. In this article, we will talk about one of the most controversial possible topics about BlizzCon: Mobile Games.
Mobile Games got a bad reputation at BlizzCon 2018 when the only announcement for the Diablo franchise was the Diablo Immortal mobile game. However, Blizzard has been working on mobile titles for a while now, from
announcements right after last BlizzCon
, to
company financial reports and alleged leaks
, there are many indicators that we will likely have a couple of new mobile entries to some Blizzard franchises announced at BlizzCon. From this scenario, we can delve into speculation waters to think of what kind of mobile games could Blizzard be creating and might be ready to announce.
The most popular guess here goes to the
Warcraft: GO
game, that
was allegedly "leaked" amidst the huge Diablo controversy last year
, a game that could be under development for at least three years now, if it still exists and hasn't been canceled. Another option, which could be in the Warcraft Universe or even in the Starcraft Universe, would be to have a strategy game, similar to many titles like Clash of Clans or Clash Royale, that put the player in charge of building their base and army to assault other player's bases.
Staying in the vein of strategy games, Blizzard could take the leap and try to develop something like
Minecraft Earth
, which mixes the Augmented Reality elements from titles like Pokémon GO and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, with the possibility of building in the world around you. Who wouldn't love to build your own fortress around your home?
For the past few years, we've seen shooter games like PUBG and Fortnite branch to mobile, which could be a positive indicator to have a version of Overwatch for Mobile players, however, it is unclear how Overwatch would translate to the mobile platform. Another genre that really has sparked a lot of attention recently is the Autochess one, with Riot and Valve developing their own versions over the summer. However, the hype around the genre has reduced recently, so it could be too late to jump on that train.
The End of PC Titles from Blizzard?
Many people get uneasy with the conversation about mobile titles and whatnot, mostly because they aren't mobile players themselves. With that, hearing news about new titles coming for mobile can be scary and may make people think that there won't be any, or maybe fewer PC announcements. However, that is very far from the truth.
While we believe that we will have new mobile game announcements at BlizzCon, we
highly
doubt that any of them will take the center stage at the conference. BlizzCon is, first and foremost, a platform for Blizzard to showcase their latest releases for their public. Their public right now is composed of mostly PC Gaming enthusiasts, so it would not be smart to have the biggest announcement for a franchise to be a mobile game. They wouldn't do that
again
.
Recently, in their
10th-anniversary stream
, Riot Games has revealed that they are working on a plethora of new titles, including mobile ones, showing that the interest in the mobile market isn't dumbfounded. When announcing their titles, they even threw a jab at the Diablo Immortal presentation by saying "It turns out, you guys do actually have phones."
Jokes aside, with Blizzard pushing for new mobile titles for their franchises, our hope lays that the titles will be used to strengthen the franchises, offering new ways to play that don't interfere with the ways we already know and love. Maybe having more ways to monetize mobile titles means that fewer of those monetization strategies reach main titles. One can hope.
