In-depth Look into Anima Rewards Increase from April 12th

Last week, Blizzard
increased the number of anima rewards given to players
, based on how many buildings characters have unlocked. While looking completely positive, there are situations that it is not worth upgrading your buildings to get more anima, as the buildings themselves cost a substantial amount of anima.
In this post, we explore what situations players can expect benefits from the Anima changes and what situations you shouldn't upgrade your buildings and just farm the anima normally.
Short Version
Short answer: It depends.
For most people, upgrading all buildings to rank 1 will be worth it, beyond that, only in rare situations. Are you looking only for a few rewards in a covenant? (i.e. just mounts or only one specific transmog set) In that case, just purchase what you're looking for in the covenant and move along.
Now, if you are looking to obtain most, if not all cosmetics associated to a Covenant, upgrading all buildings to 2, sometimes even 3, might be beneficial for you.
And finally, if your end goal involved getting all buildings upgraded anyway, this recent change flat out just made anima faster in that situation.
Long Version
With the
recent Anima hotfix
, upgrading all Covenant Sanctum buildings to levels 1, then 2, then 3, now adds extra anima items when you receive uncommon or rare anima rewards. In short, if you have all buildings level 2 and complete a world quests that rewards 2 anima rewards, it will now reward 4 (2 + 2).
While, at first glance, this looks like a massive increase to anima activities all across the board, it has some caveats that can go unnoticed. The first is that this is a
increase in anima rewards that "costs anima"
. Buildings are one of the most expensive Anima expenditures, so it isn't cheap to unlock these bonus anima rewards in the end.
However, since this Anima price can be considered an investment, we can calculate when is the turning point that spending anima in buildings pays itself.
Consider an
Anima Activity
any time you get any rare Anima item, like completing a World Quest, completing a Mythic+ Dungeon, Opening a Treasure, completing a rare Anima mission, etc.
Unlocking +1 Anima Reward Costs 4,000 Anima, which requires
115 Anima Activities
to pay itself.
Unlocking +2 Anima Reward Costs 20,000 Anima, which requires
572 Anima Activities
to pay itself.
Unlocking +3 Anima Reward Costs 40,000 Anima, which requires
1143 Anima Activities
to pay itself.
Putting in simpler terms, if you're a player that only does World Quests, you'll need to
complete 572 Anima World Quests to get the Anima you invested in upgrading all buildings to Rank 2 back
, assuming you're only upgrading them to increase your Anima rewards.
Calculating Anima Farm Efficiency
Knowing these costs we can also calculate the points that upgrading all buildings to that rank becomes an increase of speed for Anima farming.
If you need less than
8,050 Anima
- Don't upgrade any buildings
If you need between
8,050 and 68,110 Anima
- Upgrade all buildings to Rank 1
If you need between
68,110 and 228,130 Anima
- Upgrade all buildings to Rank 2
If you need more than
228,130 Anima
- Upgrade all buildings to Rank 3
For this calculation, we're using the average of
70 Anima
per activity, which is about the average given by an Anima World quest.
This example is an absolute worst case, considering a character that you would not normally upgrade any buildings. if you already have buildings upgraded or have plans to upgrading a couple anyway in order to unlock mounts, toys, pets, or transmog pieces, the thresholds for the efficiency are reduced, sometimes significantly.
