Ghostcrawler's Thoughts on Leveling in Shadowlands Pre-Patch

Greg Street aka Ghostcrawler, the former Lead Systems Designer for World of Warcraft, has returned to playing the game after a long break and shared his initial leveling thoughts on Twitter. Back when Ghostcrawler worked for Blizzard, he was quite prolific discussing game changes on the forums and Twitter, so it's nice to see him share opinions once again.
While he's discussed WoW a handful of times in BFA, such as
answering Wowhead's question on the ecological impact of turtles making it to the water
, he wasn't actively playing WoW for a while--until now. Ghostcrawler left Blizzard in late 2013 for the position of Lead Game Designer at Riot Games, currently serving as the VP of IP and Entertainment.
As we share Ghostcrawler's tweets below, please keep in mind he is just
playing
WoW, he does
not
work on the game anymore!
Ghostcrawler decided to level as a ret paladin, a class which amused many old-school players due to his signature quote of nerfing them "
На землю!
." He generally finds the experience fun and is pleased to find some of the old abilities he designed still around.
His comment that Boralus was difficult to navigate led to a chorus of people replying that he should check out Dazar'alor for a truly confusing capital city.
Character customization has been really hyped in the Shadowlands pre-patch but the creature model updates throughout the years stood out more to Ghostcrawler. With such a long break from WoW, it makes sense that constant years of NPC improvements stand out, as every expansion revamps another batch of outdated models.
Ghostcrawler had high acclaim for Exile's Reach, the new player zone added in Shadowlands. While most players associate Ghostcrawler with class design, he worked on other aspects of the game, and revealed he'd been pushing for a revamped new player experience all those years ago.

Ghostcrawler then picked up his thoughts on WoW a few days later - while he still finds leveling fun, he's concerned it could be a touch too fast as he'll hit 50 before completing the main BFA story. This is after Shadowlands removed experience from heirlooms, which would have made leveling even faster.
He explains that storytelling in WoW was a struggle, as you don't want people to skip the end of the story--which is what could happen if people level too quickly. Chromie TIme was actually meant to help with the fractured storytelling experience, sending players to focus on one expansion's story instead of skipping around between many continents.
He also revealed that he's pleasantly surprised to see how big transmog has become, which was initially viewed as a small feature when he worked on WoW. It was a surprise to many players,
in a goodbye interview
, when he revealed he worked on the feature.
Ghostcrawler closed by talking about how fun rares, treasures, and vignettes are, particularly enjoying the crab fighting in Drustvar. If you don't know the vignette, head to the Crimson Coast where you'll find
Вспыльчивый игрок
watching crabs like
Малыш Тоа
and
Бо "Два щипка" Макги
fight. Ghostcrawler, of course, has a soft spot for crabs as he was a marine biologist in a former career, which led to his forum name and crab avatar.
Of course, players were excited to see Ghostcrawler tweet about the game again, which led him to answer some more questions. Here he discusses his unique communication style interacting with the players, which was revolutionary at the time for Blizzard.
When responding to concerns that all dungeons, not just leveling dungeons, are AoE fests, Ghostcrawler expressed regret that he may have contributed to this problem by Wrath encouraging players to run dungeons long after they outgeared them.
He also shared that he really likes Wrath and MoP as expansions due to their focused thematic quality, and that Grizzly Hills has the best music!
