Dragonflight Will Have A Big Bad Villain - Who Could It Be?

So far, no major threat has been announced for this expansion yet. However, in a recent interview with
JudgeHype
, Ion Hazzikostas confirmed that some sort of big bad is inevitable.
There will inevitably be a big bad in the expansion. However, just as we experienced with Mists of Pandaria, we will have to wait to find out who it is. We'll start by learning more about the threats to Dragonflight, just like we did with the Sha and Mogu on MoP. Eventually, we will find out who the threat of Dragonflight is. It will be necessary to explore, understand the world and wait before knowing who is the main threat of the expansion. You have to understand how the story unfolds so as not to imagine that a character comes out of nowhere.
While it's entirely possible this big bad could turn out to be a new character - one we will only get to know once we reach the Dragon Isles - there are also several established antagonists directly related to
World of Warcraft
's dragon lore. While many of them have already been defeated, some may yet still return.
Galakrond - Dead
The very first real threat the Dragon Aspects faced, in a time when they were still proto-dragons, Galakrond was a monstrous proto-dragon and the "progenitor of dragonkind"
according to Alexstrasza
. Horror struck when Galakrond started to eat the other proto-dragons - which then rose as undead slaves - bound to his will and helping him find more living proto-dragons to devour.
Galakrond's insatiable hunger kept growing, and he even began to re-devourer his undead. The Titan Keeper Tyr - greatly disturbed by this threat - decided to stand against Galakrond along with five proto-dragons who we now know as the Aspects. Together, they defeated and killed Galakrond. Tyr, impressed by their courage, convinced the Titans to grant the Dragon Aspects their power, starting their role as Azeroth's protectors.
The Old Gods - Presumed Dead
In the
Dragonflight Deep Dive posted by Blizzard
, it's mentioned that, along with the awakening of the Dragon Isles, old enemies have awakened as well.
An opportunity to reclaim their legacy and return once more as the protectors of Azeroth lays before the dragons, but they’ll need the help of the heroes of Azeroth to face the challenges of this reawakening. The land has not been peacefully awaiting their return— old enemies have awakened as well and will need to be confronted and overcome if the flights are to make it their home once more.
While the only old enemy the Blizzard announcement mentions by name are the Djaradin - elemental half-giants - old threats to the dragonflights really cannot be mentioned without it bringing to mind the old gods.
While we've never known a great deal about the Dragon Isles, and a lot will certainly have changed over the years, it's worth mentioning the original planned concept for the Dragon Isles included multiple temples to the old gods, according to a 2018
interview
that the podcast Countdown to Classic conducted with former Blizzard employee John Staats. The dragonflights themselves also have a long and painful history with the old gods.
Though it's assumed we defeated the last of the Old Gods with N'Zoth - it's the Old Gods. They're about as trustworthy and likely to be
dead
dead as Dreadlords.
Deathwing - Dead
In a
recent spotlight about Ysera
, we highlighted the dreams and nightmares that still plagued Ysera once she reached Ardenweald. We learned that Ysera is still plagued by a dear friend's betrayal. Neltharion the Earth-Warder was once the Black Dragon Aspect, but he fell to the corrupting influence of the Old Gods and abandoned his fellow Aspects. No longer the Aspect of Earth, Neltharion became known as Deathwing instead.
We may have defeated Deathwing at the end of Cataclysm, but his legacy must still play an important role in the upcoming expansion.
In Dragonflight, the new playable race, the dracthyr, has been revealed to be the result of Neltharion's experimentations - long before he fell and became Deathwing. To create the perfect soldiers, Neltharion merged the essence of dragons with that of the more scrappy, adaptable mortal races that were emerging at the time. Deathwing also did not limit his experimentations to the Black Dragonflight - dracthyr will have qualities from all five of the dragonflights - such as the healing power of the Green Dragonflight and the Bronze Dragonflight's ability to manipulate time.
We can't help but be put in mind of another experiment conducted by the Black Dragonflight: the Twilight Dragonflight.
The Twilight Dragonflight - Mostly Defeated but Some Survive
Created by Sintharia, the prime consort of Deathwing, the Twilight Dragonflight infused eggs stolen from other Dragonflights with dark magic. Though Sintharia believed the idea was her own, it was put into her mind by the Old Gods.
Both Deathwing and the Twilight Dragonflight were officially defeated at the end of Cataclysm. However, it would not be the last we would see from this dragonflight. They played a major role in
Battle for Azeroth
, especially during the Visions of N'Zoth. However, the Twilight Dragonflight isn't the only distorted dragonflight associated with the old gods.
Murozond and the Infinite Dragonflight - It's Complicated
The Infinite Dragonflight is a time-traveling dragonflight, formed of corrupted members of the Bronze Dragonflight and led by Murozond, himself a corrupted version of the Bronze Dragonflight's leader, Nozdormu.
In our timeline, Nozdormu is still himself - Aspect of the Bronze Dragonflight. However, at some unknown point in the future, Nozdormu - tormented by the knowledge of his own death - will be tricked by the Old Gods and help them shatter the timeways, creating the Infinite Dragonflight.
Throughout
World of Warcraft
's history, the Infinite Dragonflight has made appearances, attempting to interfere with past events - from preventing Medivh from opening the Dark Portal, to stopping Arthas Menethil from purging the city of Stratholme. They worked with N'Zoth in an attempt to bring about the Hour of Twilight during the Cataclysm, and later, they helped Garrosh Hellscream escape to alternative universe Draenor in the lead-up to Warlords of Draenor.
The Infinite Dragonflight is a particularly interesting potential protagonist - because their formation is still set in the future. Of course, here's where it gets tricky. Our interference may have created a new timeline, one in which Nozdormu's corruption never happens. However, that's no guarantee it
won't
happen. In an interview with the the
podcast For Azeroth!
, Steve Danuser stated that Nozdormu knows this future is coming, and that he's struggling with it. With that in mind, Dragonflight certainly seems like a ripe opportunity to finally witness the story of Nozdormu's corruption and transformation into Murozond unfold ourselves.
The Infinite Dragonflight and Bronze Dragonflights' powers of traveling around timelines also opens up a vast collection of possibilities. Personally, if there was one historical event I would be very interested in witnessing myself, it would be the fight with Galakrond.
