Asmongold is interviewing Game Director Ion Hazzikostas on World of Warcraft Dragonflight!
Here's a quick summary of our highlights, but make sure to watch the full interview for the full context.
Biggest Shadowlands Successes
Making something brand new in World of Warcraft. They've mined out a lot of the lore and settings from Warcraft 3 and onwards. One of the biggest questions for each expansion is what space is left?
The lesson learned of always asking themselves, "How fun is this going to be to play multiple times".
Dragon Riding in Combat
Nothing planned right now for riding dragons into combat. But they like the idea, but want to build a solid foundation and find out what players find fun before going further.
Battlegrounds and Warmode
Long term, it's something they want to do regarding new Battlegrounds or more Warmode content. Current focus is gearing in PvP and the Rated Solo Shuffle.
Often with Warmode, the best stuff is the organic stuff.
Items from Previous Raid Tiers
When there are some outlier items, (e.g. Sylvanas Daggers), they get negative feedback on it, especially if they missed that tier. It can be frustrating for people, but generally they're okay with a couple items spanning a tier.
Master Looter
Ion kinda wants to bring back Master Looter. Maintaining two versions of loot was a mess. Over the last few years, they've been iterating on it but there's still a lot of problems with it in terms of trading rules and items that are technically an item level upgrade but aren't an upgrade.
They're taking a hard look but they've spent 6 years looking at these foundations. There's room to have personal loot for open world content, but they're thinking of heading back to a certain direction with a boss dropping a couple pieces of loot and players dolling it out however they want. Nothing to promise for the next couple months but it's something they kind of want to get back to. But this does come with some downsides such as a Bow dropping with no hunters in the raid.
Addons
They're tuning raid encounters with two goals: 1. Fun and 2. Appropriate difficulty for where it is in the raid. The reality is people are using addons. They have to tune encounters with addons in mind.
The problem is over the last few years, addons have moved out of information and more into computational and they don't know how to solve it. They've locked down addons in the past like AVR, but if they do find a way to solve it, they can redesign fights from the ground up. The problem with disabling these types of addons is if you disable the ability for addons to see like buffs and debuffs, that breaks all raid frames.
PTR and Testing
They liked the way the final 3 bosses worked in Sepulcher, where they weren't tested in advance. There's something magical about going in blind, also regarding the story. As an example, when playing Elden Ring, during the first week people are figuring things out and you can go to a wiki page and it's completely blank because no one has figured it out yet.
They're working on new Encryption technology and ways to test parts of upcoming content while hiding others to preserve a sense of exploration and hidden things.
After Wrath Classic
After defeating Halion, what's next? They're listening to the community to hear what they want.
