Specs that are considered underpowered are generally played less and tend to appear weaker than they actually.

With healers, there is usually only a finite amount of healing that needs to be done on a fight especially on farm and can turn into which healer can snipe healing better.

Also with healers, damage reduction abilities such as a Disc Priest's Слово силы: Барьер and Holy Paladin's Аура благочестия / Владение аурами don't show up as effective healing which undervalues these abilities and specs.

Remember that Pre-Patch data may not be indicative of balance in Shadowlands or Castle Nathria due to the current lack of Shadowlands systems such as Legendaries, Conduits, Soulbinds and Covenant abilities. There are also Essences and Azerite Traits which some specs benefit more than others from, which will not be present in Shadowlands.

This post is not suggesting classes that are "good" to play in Shadowlands. The purpose of this post is to look at the performance of classes in the Shadowlands pre-patch, which is longer than expected due to Shadowlands delays.Check out our Class Guides below, now updated for the Shadowlands Pre-Patch

Most Impacted Tank Specs in the Shadowlands Pre-PatchImproved the Most

Protection Paladin (Lincoln):
The Повеление Света Azerite Trait is really strong for Protection in the Pre-Patch. Protection can take advantage of this trait because of high Holy Power generation and Праведный защитник which grants cooldown reduction for Гнев карателя based on Holy Power spent. Between Праведный защитник and Видение совершенства Major, a Protection Paladin has 50-60% uptime at minimum on Гнев карателя. Повеление Света is also 'soft capped 20' for AoE damage so it scales well in dungeons and on multi-target raid encounters. This is really important to note because AoE damage has generally gone down for the other five tanks while only going up for Protection.

Hit Hardest

Blood Death Knight (Mandl):
Single-target and AoE damage took a hammering from the rescaling in the form of inconsistent scaling down across all spells. Склеп is gone for now, which means we've lost a free Удар смерти every 8 uses, along with the ability to pool more. We also don't overly benefit from essences or Azerite Traits and Twilight Devastation is gone which carried us on DPS.

Most Impacted Healer Specs in the Shadowlands Pre-PatchImproved the Most

Holy Priest (Automaticjak):
Holy Priest is doing extremely well in Pre-Patch at the moment. The addition of the talent Молитвенный круг replacing the now-baseline Круг исцеления means Holy Priests can fit more Молитва исцеления casts into a damage window and continue leveraging high value from their Литания Azerite Trait. Furthermore, as many bosses in Ny'alotha are dying more rapidly now, having two raid cooldowns in Божественный гимн and Слово Света: Спасение continue to produce excellent output.

Restoration Shaman (Niseko)

Restoration Shaman received significant buffs to quite a few of our base abilities: Быстрина, Цепное исцеление, Волна исцеления, Целительный ливень all are 10-30% stronger than before. These buffs are balanced out by an increase in mana cost in some of those spells, but with plenty of mana tools still being available in the Pre-Patch this doesn’t come in to play. Obtaining Щит земли as a baseline ability with an increased healing boost does not hurt either!

Holy Paladin (Pelinal):
The spec is struggling to find its footing in the pre-patch due to a variety of factors. Gaining Проблеск Света as a talent has helped keep the de-facto “Glimmer” build the primary choice for the remainder of BFA. However, a large part of Paladin’s strength in Ny’alotha came from its very high Гнев карателя uptime provided from the Ineffable Truth Corruption which is now gone. Also, Ny'alotha fight length has shortened, making it harder to squeeze in the most value from each Гнев карателя, tanks are more self-sufficient leading to higher overheal percentages, and just an increase in power for other healers has left Paladin behind in healing done. Another noteworthy factor is of course the added mana cost to Удар воина Света meaning Paladins need to sacrifice minor essences, or trinket slots to sustain the mana cost of heavy Удар воина Света usage. Paladins also saw a significant change-up in playstyle with the added Holy Power mechanic, and the learning curve or re-learning curve has made Paladins feel weaker, though this may be offset as players become more familiar with Holy Power as a mechanic again.

Most Impacted DPS Specs in the Shadowlands Pre-PatchImproved the Most

Unholy Death Knight (Bicepspump):
The major buff to Unholy in the pre-patch comes from the change of our Mastery. Instead of only increasing shadow damage, it now increases both shadow damage and minion damage. Since minion damage is such a big portion of our overall output, this is a huge buff. Furthermore, we saw talent changes that increase our throughput. Нечестивая порча got buffed quite significantly, now also increasing our minion damage. We also received Нечестивый союз in a row that previously didn't provide any single target throughput. With Видение совершенства, we can align Апокалипсис, Темное превращение and Нечестивая порча on a 45 seconds cooldown for juicy burst windows.

Beast Mastery Hunter (Impakt)

The spec at a core level is not reliant on borrowed power that we won't get until Shadowlands, and performs well without the extra systems. Scales extremely well with stats, and has powerful Azerite Traits that offer exceptional amounts of stats, specifically Танец смерти and Первобытные инстинкты.

Arcane Mage (Norrinir)

Чародейский разгром is really strong right now and is responsible by grand part of the damage Arcane is doing right now. (Note: Arcane Pummeling was nerfed on 10/21.)

Frost Mage (Norrinir)

Видение совершенства works really well with Ледяная Бездна and Руна мощи. When it procs, it activates both Руна мощи and Стылая кровь, which can then be extended with Ледяная Бездна. (Note: Vision of Perfection has been nerfed on 10/20.)

Shadow Priest (Anshlun)

Shadow overall scales well with all stats in Shadowlands. On top of that, currently the Azerite Trait Злобные призраки is really strong, because the number of apparitions that Shadow is spawning is increased compared to BFA and the trait has additive properties. (Note: Azerite Traits were nerfed on 10/21.)

Affliction Warlock (Xyronic)

Affliction, similarly to Beast Mastery doesn't have any one aspect that is ahead of others, but overall just the scaling of the spec is great for end of expansion scenarios, with extra systems and stats.

The relative increase in strength for Elemental in the prepatch can be attributed largely to two factors:

Havoc Demon Hunter (Kib):
Single target damage for Havoc is really weak right now, which ends up being significant in a raid that is on farm for months. This way players need to sacrifice cleave damage to do more single target. I Shadowlands, Havoc gets stronger with their the Venthyr Covenant ability Клеймо греха and Танец с судьбой conduit. Other issue is that the strong Azerite Trait Яростный взор provides Haste Rating, being subject to Diminishing Returns. In Shadowlands, the Leveling Perk becomes a Haste %, which is not subject to Diminishing Returns.

Arms Warrior (Archimtiros)

Arms' damage is heavily propped up by the synergy between the Azerite trait Испытание силы, talent Управление гневом, and essence Воспоминания о снах наяву. In 8.3, this was exacerbated by obscene amounts of Haste due to corruptions, which led to more cooldown reduction via Управление гневом and thus inordinately high uptime on Испытание силы. That said, Arms current tuning is also very weak, which contributes to the overall poor performance. While it's true that losing all of that Haste has significantly reduced Arms output, Испытание силы remains one of strongest Azerite Traits in the game, only barely propping up a spec which would otherwise be at the very bottom of the meters.

Demonology Warlock (Not)

Demonology was hit hard with the loss of a massive amount of Haste by losing Corruption. Not only are you generating Осколок души less frequently but you are more importanly losing out on a ton of casts from your Призыв демонического тирана, which was what the whole spec played around buffing as your big 60s damage profile. This coupled with the fact that Affliction's scaling for the end of the expansion is very strong leaves much to be desired if you're playing Demonology.
