This week, in the fifth chapter of Secrets of the First Ones - 9.2's main storyline, we spend some time with Bolvar Fordragon and his daughter, Taelia. Their relationship is an unusual one - for most of her life, Taelia believed her father was dead.
The following article contains spoilers from Chapter 5 of 9.2's main story campaign.
Icecrown
In the
raid finale cinematic for Icecrown Citadel
, after Arthas's defeat, the ghost of his father - Terenas Menethil - appeared, to take his son away, and to share the information that the Scourge would become an even greater threat if no one took his son's place. "There must always be a Lich King."
At the time, Bolvar Fordragon, already forever changed by the torture he had endured in Icecrown, chose to sacrifice himself. As he took up the Helm of Domination, he had one last message for those he was leaving behind. "Tell them only that the Lich King is dead... And that Bolvar Fordragon died with him."
Orphaned Daughter
By this time, Taelia was already in the care of Cyrus Crestfall - after her mother died when the Scourge hit Lordaeron, Bolvar sent his daughter to Kul Tiras to keep her safe. We met Taelia during the events of Battle for Azeroth, where she helped Jaina escape from prison before playing an important role in bringing the Kul Tirans into the Alliance.
For most of her life, Taelia believed Bolvar had died a hero in Northrend. Though Anduin considered explaining the situation to her, he kept putting it off, and It was only recently that she learned the truth. During the events of the Shadowlands pre-patch, after Sylvanas Windrunner sent Mawsworn to kidnap Azeroth's leaders, Mathias Shaw rather indelicately let the fate of Taelia's father slip in front of her.
Shandris Feathermoon says: These abductions... the Scourge attacks... the Banshee will pay for what she's done. By Elune's fury, we will bring her to justice!
Taelia Fordragon says: Right now, I don't give a damn about justice. I just want to find where she's taken our friends. King Greymane, what's the plan?
Genn Greymane says: We'll get them back, Taelia. I swear to you, we'll save them all.
Master Mathias Shaw says: The Ebon Blade has extracted the Lich... the Highlord from the battle in Icecrown. He is recovering in Acherus.
Genn Greymane says: I pray he can help us find answers. Without that cursed helm, the Scourge are running rampant.
Genn Greymane says: We'll need the help of the Argent Crusade to stem the tide of undead.
Master Mathias Shaw says: If anyone can figure out how this all fits together, it's Bolvar.
Taelia Fordragon says: Did you say... Bolvar? Bolvar Fordragon? That's my father...is he alive?!
Genn Greymane says: Taelia, I... will explain. But we can't afford to let our guard down. Not with so much at stake.
Journey to Shadowlands
Taelia has since traveled to the Shadowlands, and we've even seen a brief reunion with her father, but at the time, she was too concerned with the fate of her friends to worry about much more than making sure her father would help.
Taelia Fordragon says: Please, father. We need to know if our friends can still be saved!
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: You do not understand the risk, Taelia. For me to peer into the Maw would mean--
Taelia Fordragon says: I journeyed all the way to the realms of Death to meet the father I thought was lost to me. Bolvar Fordragon, one of Azeroth's bravest heroes.
Taelia Fordragon says: I haven't asked a single thing of you since I was a little girl. The little girl you sent away.
Taelia Fordragon says: But I'm asking you this. Tell us if they are still alive.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: My shining star, I... will do as you request.
Zereth Mortis
During this week's storyline, Crown of Wills, we spend some time researching Domination magic - specifically ways to resist it, so that we can defeat the Jailer. During some of our research, Taelia and Bolvar join us, and we get a chance to overhear snippets of conversation. Understandably, Taelia sounds quite unhappy about Bolvar's decision to leave her orphaned.
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Who taught you how to weild a hammer?
Taelia Fordragon says: Sir Crestfall, of Kul Tiras. He was always there for me, growing up. Someone I could look up to, in the flesh.
Taelia Fordragon says: When you were there, alone in Icecrown, did you ever think of mother and me?
Highlord Bolvar Fordragon says: Every day.
Stay Awhile and Listen
At the end of this week's chapter, if we choose to stay awhile and listen, we can witness Taelia finally confronting her father on his decision to become Lich King. Bolvar, for his part, gets a chance to explain his actions - how he chose to make the sacrifice to keep Taelia - along with the rest of the world - safe. However, Taelia challenges him on his decision, reminding him that the sacrifice was not only his own. Bolvar concedes, admitting that his decision must have hurt her, and showing regret for her pain.
Taelia Fordragon says: There is so much I want to ask you... I don't know where to start.
Taelia Fordragon says: When you grow up believing your father is a dead hero, everything is much more neat and tidy. When you learn he's quite alive it's... different.
Bolvar Fordragon says: The man I was did die that day. The dragon's fire sealed my purpose.
Taelia Fordragon says: But couldn't you at least have let me know you were still there? Under that helm? All that time?
Bolvar Fordragon says: Would you have journeyed to Icecrown, if you knew?
Taelia Fordragon says: Yes, of course. I would have gone anywhere for you.
Bolvar Fordragon says: Which is why you could not know. I had to make that sacrifice, to keep you and the rest of the world safe from that place. From that power.
Taelia Fordragon says: But it wasn't just you who made that sacrifice. It was the rest of us, too. Everyone who loved you.
Bolvar Fordragon says: I know. And for the pain I caused you, I will always feel sorrow. I pray that one day, you can forgive me for it.
