We have found a bug with Bryntroll where it procs too often for Retribution paladins or Unholy DKs. For example both portions of Scourge Strike could cause a proc, which is unintended.
Bryntroll seems to account for about ~3-4% of dps for a typical Icecrown Fury warrior. That's more of where it should be for other melee.

This is amazing over the current 258 2hs. Only 8 item levels above and it pulls 13 more weapon DPS. It's a little on the fast side, and the lack of crit/armor pen/hit may be unsettling, but that proc, depending on the rate, could make up for that, while boosting your health. With 2x Bold Cardinal Rubies you can get 147 strength out of this, baseline.
This drops in Icecrown Citadel 25-player normal mode, by the way.
Edit: Meant to say fast side >.>. Corrected.
Edit: This weapon was buffed. Prior to the buff, it only gave 107 strength, whereas now it gives 169.

Good for tank dks?
Edit- Exactly what I was saying. The healing isnt something you would want on a dps, you want crit. But the sockets and the healing effect could lead one to believe that this is for DK tanks. If the effect procs often, even then its a pretty terribad item. Guess it will just be fodder for DEing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't these type of procs tend to scale strongly with spellpower? There are two other weapons I remember seeing that scaled pretty well -
www.wowhead.com/?item=28311
seems to be 100% coefficient and
www.wowhead.com/?item=10804
around 50%.
If it does work with spellpower, it could be of use for paladins (perhaps, as some above have said, as a self healing weapon or even just a burst damage effect if the proc rate is strong).

I'm so sick of these whiny raiders who complain about a lack of this number or that stat on a weapon that's really cool and interesting. WoW needs MORE interesting procs on its gear, not less. This weapon could be amazing for PvP and is just a really handy tool to have around in general, especially for classes who can't heal. We want more interesting gear, so stop complaining when we get it. If this weapon gives .000372 less DPS or whatever, then shut up and use something else.

Everyone is focusing on this as a dps weapon. To my eye it looks fantastically itemized as a DK tanking weapon. The heal will help out your healers and give threat and the red/blue seem great for stamina and/or exp/stam gems. I'm no expert on DK tanks but it seems worth considering.

Ret pally in my guild got this today (I also am a ret pally, but I had a better weapon, so c'est la vie)
Anyway, on our saurfang kill, the proc on this thing was 7.5% of his dps on recount. ABOVE divine storm. Above RV tics (with 4p t9). So I think it's safe to say, the proc rate on this is ridiculous and it should not be overlooked as a truly viable PvE weapon.
However, an interesting note is that the proc does NOT seem to be able to crit. It procced 62 times for him over the course of the fight (freaking ridiculous) with a minimum hit of 1121, avg hit of 2657, and max of 3496 with no crits recorded (the max is likely from AW being popped, along with trinkets), so it seems to be affected by some buffs at the very least, but certainly not a high coefficient for spellpower or anything like that.
Edited for mixing up numbers
Edit 2 - it also missed twice, and since he's melee hit capped it's likely that it uses the spell hit table for the proc.
Edit 3 - To put this in some context, the fight lasted long enough for him to do 112 melee swings, with 60 crusader strikes and 54 divine storms, which I assume are all this can proc off of, but in case it can proc of judgment he did 30 of those (hmm, after looking at these numbers they confuse me, but lets focus on the proc rates and not the relative numbers of those abilities)
Комментарий от
Suddenly
Did a bit of testing with this thing.
Between...
182 melee swings
64 judgements
118 crusader strikes, and
49 divine storms, or
413 attacks in total
There were 106 procs from drain life.
413 / 106 ~ 25.6% procrate, which is pretty close to 1 in 4.
Min 1831, average 2441, max 3263. 9 misses, no crits. Pretty much confirms what Kythos just said, low spell coefficient, uses spell hit table.
Does not seem to be able to proc if you are facing away from an enemy. 60 or so judgements / divine storms with my back turned and not one drain life.
Did this again.
600 white swings, 54 procs, 3.4 speed, that's roughly 9% per swing, or ~1.6 ppm (1.588).
That's a fair bit lower than what the above numbers gave.
Комментарий от
495222
This weapon has a higher proc chance for ret pallies because when they get a white hit the application of a SoV stack on the target counts as another hit effectively raising their proc chance for this weapon. The proc itself is worth 500-600 DPS for rets.
If only it would of dropped from him.
Beaten by 5 minutes.
As of 1/14/09 Blizzard has changed the way PPM items work including berserking to make them more stable for all classes. Meaning this is the same for a warrior as a paladin.

Looting both the sword from marrowgar 10 and this one from marrowgar 25 on the first day upgraded both my tanking and my dpsing weapon as a DK. I used lothar's edge for the nice hit boost for (frost) tanking but the insane proc rate of almost 3kish life drain will worth the change even tho I'll lose 2.38% hit. Did no special tests, but it can proc instantly after a proc and proc'd every 8secs avarage for me (19 in 150sec or so).

I also wonder if the proc works with Dancing Rune Weapon as a blood specced DK.
Комментарий от

As a tank weapon on a Blood DK it did about 20% of healing done over an entire H VH PuG. Death Strike did about 60%. If you enjoy the self-healing playstyle of blood tanking then it's definitely a nice little addition to the self-healing repertoire.
The 15% proc rate seems accurate and there appears to be no internal cooldown. On a dummy I tested with white swings alone, the first proc happened after 3 swings, the second after 10, the third after 5. Not a very in-depth test but it gives a general idea of how frequently it will be proccing, especially once you include abilities into the mix.
In my opinion it is probably the best DK tank weapon in ICC (apart from its Heroic version or Shadowmourne). The proc is very potent and does couple nicely with the Blood tank playstyle.

As everyone else has been saying, this axe is amazing, and is likely going to be overlooked a lot because of the proc and lack of other stats. I got it yesterday on my Death Knight, and the proc alone is doing about 4-6% of my total damage. I understand for Ret pallies this is even higher. If I were you, I'd dump all my DKP on this weapon and not worry about much else. I doubt there's a much better weapon that drops off anything in the game at this particular time.

Wouldn't be surprised if this proc sees some quick changes.
As-is, you can do some rough napkin math and calculate the proc at an added 70~ weapon dps, which would make this weapon competitive (if not better) than passive-stat-itemized ilvl 284 2hers (i.e, Lich King hard mode ilvl).
Puggable (let alone puggable first boss) weapons usually aren't supposed to be close to BIS.

The theorycrafting on this potent weapon is still rather sparse, so I spent several hours testing the limits of the proc and it's dps contribution. First off, the basics:
The 264 version proc has an average damage of 2250, while the 277 version has an average of 2538.
The damage does not scale with any character stats (though the dps does, more on that below).
The damage does scale with any percentage damage increases that affect spell damage, such as Avenging Wrath, Curse of Elements, Blood Presence, etc.
The drain can proc off of any weapon attack, as well as some odd events such as applying or refreshing effects such as deathknight diseases or the paladin talent Righteous Vengeance. These odd events do have some requirements though. The drain can proc off of the refreshing of some DoTs or debuffs so long as the character is within melee range of and facing the target for the drain. Specific to the deathknight class, the drain can proc off of the disease application of Icy Touch (assuming you are in melee range), can double-proc off Plague Strike (the strike and the disease application), and on each target that is in melee range and in front of you from Pestilence.
The drain has a base proc rate of 2 procs-per-minute, or 11.3333% chance per swing, and has no internal cooldown.
The drain can proc multiple times per attack, provided there's are more than one weapon event for the attack. For example, the drain can multi-proc off the following:
- On any or all of the multiple targets of Cleave, Whirlwind, Divine Storm, Heart Strike, or Sweeping Strikes.
- From a melee (or special) and it's subsequent seal proc, Blood-Caked Blade proc, or Windfury proc.
- From both the physical and shadow portions of Scourge Strike.
The drain can not proc from any spells, excluding the odd events mentioned above.
The drain is incapable of critting and functions on the spell hit table. However, it doesn't seem to be resistible.
Now, with a 2 PPM baseline, the weapon will deal 2 procs a minute before any waste or special attacks or talents are factored in, giving it a minimum dps of 75. In practice, the proc will usually provide between 200 and 400 dps, depending on the character's haste rating, spec and rotation (and therefore number of procable attacks per second), spell hit chance, and +damage buffs present. A good estimate is that it will provide approximately 4-8% of a character's dps. For many classes, this means the proc is worth the equivalent of between 400 and 800 additional attack power, though it's place on the best-in-slot list is strongly dependent class, spec, haste rating, and rotation. In general is can be assumed to be near the top of the list, however, as the proc itself provides a fairly respectable amount of dps while also making it easier for the healers to keep you alive through miscellaneous raid damage.

I realize this isn't what Blizzard had in mind as this axe's optimal usage, but this could be a good weapon for players who enjoy soloing old content like Zul'gurub and the likes. Since mob hits are weak relative to the newer zones, the 2,000-range heal could be like having a lowbie scrub healer with you, and that little health could go a long way to an 80 in one of these zones.

So I really think this is a awsome

Bryntroll damage too high?
Because we removed the passive stats to add the procs to some weapons in Icecrown we were a little more generous with what they could do to keep them interesting/fun even if a lot of players felt they would be terrible without the passive stats. The Nibelung staff can proc a lot of Val’kyr so this isn't a Bryntroll/melee specific topic.
Just to avoid surprises, procs like this are the kind of thing you will likely see a lot more of in order for gear to not to feel so predictable and boring from tier to tier.
As far as the PvP concerns, the classes that can use this weapon were already quite popular so we are keeping an eye on things and see if any noticeable impact happens on them.
You are kind of mixing two different things together. Yes, it can be harder to eyeball and item's value with procs like this, but this is only one item slot (sure, two for those titan gripping folk) and pretty unlikely to be something that will be put on a character from head to toe. The "eyeball" of an item's worth also isn't intended to cut down every item to being a system of +1 to your previous item or anything like that, we still want decisions to be made.
The goal is to make them a little more fun and interesting and while players will figure out which one(s) are best, hopefully the interest in the proc alone will be a bit of a factor in the item. I know personally if I can spawn some random val'kyr, I'll take a small dps loss, heh
we will see if it gets nerfed

From a fury warrior's perspective, the proc does about 3.5% ish of my damage total in any given night. I've had it for a week and noticed my heroic strike crits are actually lower, due to the 3.4 speed. Overall this is probably better suited for a dk or a ret. I have to make comment about the usefulness of the healing side of this proc. If like myself you enjoy soloing places like ZG and other lvl 70 instances it really is a life saver. A quick pestilence around a 6-7 strong mob and its a quick self heal. Versus Tiger/Raptor boss you can pretty much faceroll them in blood stance with no real need to use other healing effects at all.
On the negative side this healing proc I find to be completely counterproductive on Anub heroic due to most of healing effect being taken straight back by leech swarm thus making the proc far less useful.
Комментарий от
Dernar
I don't want to upset you guys, but Pyrius and Caboom have the right idea about this as a tanking weapon. Is the life steal from the proc nice? Yup, sure is. Does it make this a weapon that is particularly well itemized for DK tanking? No, not really. Because of the way Blizz has designed boss damage output for this expansion, small heals tend to be mostly or completely consumed through overhealing. That is, because even well geared tanks need big heals at least every other time they take a hit from a raid boss, healers spend a lot of time trying to bring tanks to max health. If your tanks are very far below maximim health for more than a few seconds straight, they are likely about to die. This results in a very large amount of overhealing for nearly all progression encounters.
The fact is that at 2 PPM (even though it procs off abilities and even double procs in some situations) is not a reliable proc rate. The healing from this will very rarely save a tank from death, but will often heal a tank that is already at max health (effectively useless for survival). If the proc rate was much higher, and the simply procced heals instead of draining health, this would be a clear choice for tanks. In that case, it would work more like druid HoTs, which heal for small amounts, but do so very frequently. But that's not the case. On the other hand, even the small heals from this can greatly reduce the healing a dps player will need during encounters with moderate raid damage.
So yes, this could be a really nice tanking weapon, but the proc doesn't appear to be itemized with that intent (at least not solely). With the DPS figures I'm seeing here, this weapon is probably better off in the hands of a dps class than a tanking DK, at least the first few times it drops for your guild. If it drops in a PUG, I would encourage DK tanks to roll.
If you want to know more about this, check out some discussions of Effective Health, Avoidance in WotLK, or even just about Chill of the Throne (the ICC dodge debuff everyone hates).
****Edit 1/9/10**** Expect a nerf to the proc rate on this for Ret pallies and DKs. While this means the dps output of the proc is going to considerably lower, it also means the proc for DK tanks will be considerably lower. This is still not particularly well itemized for DK tanks, but it may be easier to justify giving it to one with the incoming DPS nerf.

u guys might not like the fact that shadow's edge is way better than brynroll, but its a fact.
i did some testing with the quel blade and bryntroll on HC dummy as a paladin. with t10 2set bonus ontop of it.
bryntroll did 5000-5200 over 5min / 3 times
quel delar did a steady 5100 dps over 5min / 3 times
if thats not enough to prove my point, shadow's edge has 50 more dmg + crit and armor pen. and with paladins using DS so much with tier bonus (110% weap dmg) it makes it the ultimate weapons for paladins.
so. shadow's edge will be better without any dubt what so ever. for all classes.

overhealing
on a tank, so the proc is kinda useless.
We Dps rolled the item and i lost it to a heroic and toc5-geared fury warrior, but i prefer that rather than giving this to a Dk tank.
it would have been a nice upgrade from ramaladni's, which gives me some useless arPen as retribution

I see some people comment it lacks armor penetration or hit and crit. I say, screw all that.
These stats are damn near perfect for a Retribution Paladin. ArP and Haste are both terrible for a paladin. A very large portion of dmg already ignore armor and autoattacking is only a relative small part of our dps. And hit? There is so much hit lying around right now im horrible overcapped and i cant find a way to get rid of it so i can use another chestpiece.
Strength and Crit is all a Ret paladin really needs once that hit/exp cap has been hit. And tbh, when you get around that 30% crit you only really want Str on anything. So yay, finally a weapon that isnt loaded with a ton of ArP and stats that mostly fit a Warrior and to lesser extent DK's.
The proc on this thing is awesome as im sure youll have read in the comments before this. Solid dmg, no internal cooldowns, high proc chance. Wouldnt trade it in the world for some crappy ArP.

I got this today and did some testing to compare it woth Dual-Blade Butcher.
The proccs for retri were nerfed about 3 weeks ago, so I wanted to know how much.
Results after 10 minutes on dummy with each weap:
DPS with DBB: 5066
DPS with Bryntroll: 5353
Drain Life had 137 proccs and did 9,4% of my DPS, that means 503 DPS from the procc alone.
It proccs of melee, judgements, CS and DS. I cant confirm if it proccs off seals.
If it does procc off seals then the procc rate was 10.9%. If it does not then it's 27.5%.

To reply to, and possibly add some clarity and more data to Tryptomine's post:
I was farming BRD for enchanting mats (Leveling Enchanting on an alt) and decided to take this time to do some testing since the mobs in there can't kill me and I have time to actively watch the procs:
2. There is NO internal CD on the proc.
Or if so, it is less then 2.7 seconds, since I watched it go off on two consecutive melee swings.
-- There is NO cooldown at all. I had it proc on several mobs at once. (also see "#4")
3. It is about a 15% proc rate.
This number determined by just standing and auto attacking a dummy for a solid half hour.
-- I had roughly 21% proc rate, but I was killing 20+ mobs at a time.
4. It DOES proc off of skills ...
-- I had it proc off of Icy Touch, Plague Strike (And their dots), when applying and AFTER applying Pestilence, and when using Death and Decay, it would proc on damage from D&D and Diseases. Also from Blood Boil, and secondary target on Heartstrike. Had a few times where it would proc on both attacks (main and secondary) at the same time.
5. The proc CANNOT crit.
Not once did it ever crit for me in my extensive testing.
-- Actually, I've had it crit twice now, but it doens't seem to follow the players crit%, as I have a 38% crit chance in my DPS gear, and it only crit twice in two full clears of BRD.
6. The proc CAN miss.
It appears to be regarded the same as any other spell and can miss depending on your spell hit or be partially resisted.
-- I didn't have it miss once, but if it missed for you, I'd imagine it can miss. (though, I'm hit capped in both my tanking and DPS set so I dunno)
7. Spell power does not increase the proc's damage.
Can't be as sure with this one, since the only spell power I could get was a 46 spell power food, but I found absolutely no noticeable increase in the proc's damage after eating.
-- Haven't tried, but I have a full heirloom SP set I can put on (~250SP) and test, but that's for later.

This item would be just as good for a DK tank as it would be for anyone who wants it for dps.
1) Stamina. If a weapon has high stamina, the DK gets more mileage out of
Rune of Stoneskin Gargoyle
. This weapon gets flying colors on this one-161 stam is very good, and the 2 sockets can be filled with
30 stamina gems
(all sockets should be filled 30 stamina gems anyway, with the
occasional exception
to get a
Metagem
bonus.
2) Damage-specifically max damage. Similar to a rogue, a DK's
strike
abilities
do
damage
based
off weapon damage. So the bigger weapon's damage is, the better threat it produces.
Tanks who produce more threat=raid dps doesn't have to hold back=better dps for the raid.
3) Stats for threat (expertise, hit, and to a lesser extent crit and armor pen) aren't nearly as important as weapon damage. Sure, some expertise or hit would be nice to have, but to quote
Tankspot's Comprehensive Guide to Death Knight Tanking
"weapon DPS will always outweigh the benefit gained from any stats on the weapon for threat output."
4)
The proc
. Is it a good proc? As far as procs go, yes. It has no internal cooldown, and can proc off most abilities that do damage.
The proc is good for threat-an extra 2k damage pretty often is great. The proc isn't that great for healing though. Any chance on hit abilities are hard to depend on though-and unlike
some
other
abilites, you can't control very well when proc happen. Like some other posters have mentioned, often this ability will cause overheals, but that isn't important, because there's no mana being wasted in the process, unlike overheals from your healer(s). So the proc is really just icing on the cake of a high stam-high dps weapon.
Any dps that thinks a DK tank shouldn't be allowed to roll on this weapon are trying to increase their own chances of winning it at the expense of that tank, plain and simple. Assuming
it
is a dps increase for the DK tank, just let them roll. If you want the weapon bad enough to screw someone out of their roll on it, form your own raid and reserve it. And always,
be smart
and
consider
your
alternatives.

Confirmed that the proc does stack. I've been getting about a 3.5% steady proc rate over the course of an entire ICC25, with 2 of these bad boys I'm now at a proc rate of about 7%.
It appears they are on separate cooldowns.

Bryntroll has been through several rounds of nerfs. As of 3.3.2, the proc is quite rare. In consequence this item is now the worst ilvl 264 2H weapon for ret pallies, DKs, and warriors if you can use most of the itemization on its replacement. For example, if you can regem/gear to use the hit on Cryptmaker without going too far over the hit cap, Cryptmaker is a far better weapon. Shadow's Edge and the Arthas weapons are better in every way.
Note that Bryntroll is still better than ilvl245/258 weapons.

For those of you wondering, yes this is good on a fury warrior for dual wielding. Everyone tries to tell me its a waste to have an arbiter in your offhand instead of something like a Ramaladni's. But I pull 10k+ in ICC25 and I've done extensive dummy training and found about a 400dps gap between Ramaladni in my OH and another Bone Arbiter in my OH. the gap of course in favor of the bone arbiter.
reasons why people say I shouldn't OH a bone arbiter
1. the speed
2. the lack of excess stats
reasons why I OH the bone arbiter
1. the top end
2. the strength stacking (which I don't see people doing much of these days)
3. 2x lifesteal proc surprisingly helps your survivability a TON in any raid in which you don't have big boy healers
4. the numbers don't lie, I dps more with it than without it.

In a 7 minute fight, this thing proc'd 36 times. Roughly 5ppm, doing a total of 4% of my damage at 120k damage, min of 2700, avg of 3300 and max of 3600. As a blood dk, it did more damage than my blood-caked blade.
I like it!

Obviously this is looking ahead just a
little
bit, but current debates over the proc aside, I think it will make this a very good leveling weapon in the next expansion. We don't know how radically the stat changes are going to impact the reitemization of pre-Cat weapons, but taking what we do know:
1. Even now, this is not an especially difficult weapon to obtain, and it will get even easier to obtain as Wrath winds down and the ICC buff ratchets up. So it's going to be obtainable for toons that are not cutting-edge raiders.
2. Historically, the highest ilevel gear from an expansion have remained fairly competitive until heroic/raid level content in the next expansion. Look at weapons from Hyjal, BT, or early Sunwell as compared to weapons you get leveling in Wrath (or people raiding Naxx in T6). The two gem slots help too as ostensibly leveling weapons won't be socketable and Cataclysm gems will be superior to wrath epic gems. In short even if some late quest rewards beat this the difference won't be crippling for leveling damage.
3. The proc would be
very
nice for leveling. Anything that restores health is a nice perk to cut downtime. Given the proc rate and lack of cooldown it will be especially good for a grindy (a-la protadin) leveling style, where you round up 10 mobs and kill them all at once.

I just wanted to confirm that the weapon does proc off of spells. i am a ret paladin and i saw my axe proc off of a judgement. just wanted to throw that out there incase anyone was wondering about this. :)

The proc on this weapon is affected by +damage% and +healing% buffs, such as tenacity from Wintergrasp.
I've had the drain life heal me for over 10 thousand hit points.
I'm not sure whether healing done is affected by the damage is does. For example, if you're hitting a player wearing PvP gear, does the decreased damage from the proc also reduce the healing it gives you?

Now the question is, who would have priority on this weapon - DK tank or DPS? DK Tank of course, but that would only brood the hate for DKs.

I'm a dps blood DK, and I got this last week. Would
Herkuml War Token
be a good match for this axe? More haste = more white attacks = more procs? Or am I completely wrong? ;)
Also, should I keep this for the rest of my ICC career, or should I still work on getting
Shadow's Edge
?

This weapon is a pretty fast weapon and don't have thoose hit/armor penetrating/haste/crit stats. But the life steal is a great add for a Blood Tank Death Knight, cause the blood spec provides much self heal. It is also a great weapon to acually solo stuff.

This axe, being the

heroic
version. Why, I'm not terribly sure, but it happened after the stat squish. For a blood death knight doing timewalking this axe is the number one tank weapon.
