Let's say a mage casts
Blizzard
and has many crits from it. If it
was
and AoE trinket, it would do a bunch of damage (very useful for XT-002 and Naxx trash, likely making it a bit
too
overpowered. Aside from that, it does have a good + Spell power :)

Drops off Anub'arak 25 Normal mode. This is the Alliance form of the trinket. Horde version can be found
here
.
As stated before, it's basically the newest incarnation of
The Lightning Capacitor
. The following rules apply:
- Pillar of Flame proc has no spell graphics, i.e proc appears invisible (as of 3.2)
- Pillar of Flame can crit
- Is not affected by +spell damage
- Proc damage enchanced by buffs that increase damage, such as
Storm Power
- Is affected by debuffs on mobs (Misery, etc ...)
- Works off AoE
- Proc doesn't need you to face your target
- Molten armor can proc it
- Proc always shoots at the target which generated the last charge and not your current target
- Crit chance is affected by your chance to crit with spells
- Unlike the TLC the motes do have a 2 second CD between each mote proc rather than just having a CD between pillars
- Charges stays until used, no duration
- Crits from Pillar of Flame will not generate additional charges
- DoT crits do not proc motes (as of 3.2)
- Talents that increase fire damage increase the proc damage, e.g
Molten Fury
,
Emberstorm
and
Molten Core
(as of 3.2)
N.B Partially copied from Catina and Nara's comments from TLC page.
Edit: (07/09) Added more info about talents and spell gfx.

- No hidden cooldown. 2 spells critting at the same time causes 2 charges
... what? :E
Mote of Flame
cannot be gained more often than once every 2.5 sec

Can we talk about how powerful in PVE this will be on a shadow priest?
Vampiric Touch - Can Crit
Devouring Plague - Can Crit
Shadow Word: Pain - Can Crit
Mind Blast - Can Crit
Mind Flay - Can Crit
Shadow Word: Death - Can Crit
Get it? With three DoTs ticking and applying direct damage spells stacking three motes will not be a problem. Second priority on this I'd say will probably go to a fire mage with living bomb crits (Or arcane mage), and elemental shaman with flame shock crits. Third probably Affliction/destro locks and Moonkin.
However we'll have to wait for the actual math and DPS parses from live to see for sure.

if priest dot "crits" are anything like lock dot "crits" they don't actually crit rather the damage is applied twice so i doubt this would proc off them but that is purely speculation.
Taken from the 1.0 and 2.0 versions of this trinket they benefited from shaman talents specifically addressed to lightning damage and seeing as this deals fire damage it may be fair to speculate that talents such as
Fire power,
Earth and Moon,
and the like will increase the damage as well.
Unless there was a change from the older models, aside from damage type and stats, you can gain motes as quick as you can crit, aoe included, once you reach 3 it'll fire off dealing damage to the 3rd crit victim, once it fires it goes on a 2 second cooldown in which you cannot gain any motes, after the 2 second cooldown you can gain motes as fast as possible again....
Long story short whether this gets some benefit from talents and such or none whatsoever it's still an amazing trinket and the more haste and crit you have the more this will add to your dps.
ANY dps caster can make use of this be it mage, lock, priest, moonkin, or shaman

They may have changed then, i know at one point they simply produced a second similar damage application rather than doubling the damage on "crit" technically not counting as crits. In that case if they are technically crits then this would be even more attractive to dot users than originally anticipated.

Just as a point of reference for the debates on whether or not dot related spells crit, I did a test on this with a friend of mine. The character I was using is a Totw fire spec mage (using focus magic) and my friend was an affliction specced warlock (with the obvious benefits of having Pandemic, allowing their corruption and unstable affliction to 'crit'. So, we did a test where I gave the warlock Focus Magic (which gives me a buff whenever the target crits.) After which the warlock proceeded to roll Corruption and UA on a target dummy. I got zero procs. So, assuming this is in any related to the 'crit' mechanics of this trinket, I think it tends to favor direct dealing damage casters. If I can find a warlock that has a TLC or the Thunder Capacitor, I'll have them test rolling dots with that.
Regardless, I would definitely like to get my hands on this one. =)

From the
Thunder Capacitor
comments, as of 3.1.1:
This does NOT proc off of dot criticals, only MindBlast, Mindflay, Mindsear and SW:D as shadow.
Unfortunately, this also applies to Affliction Warlocks with Pandemic. Even though Pandemic crits are now "real" crits, they do not seem to proc charges with this item.
Pretty disappointing, especially given that this trinket is one of the few that doesn't have haste on it. Of the
trinkets ilvl 226 or above
, only 2 caster trinkets don't include haste:
Living Flame
and
Flare of the Heavens
For a shadow priest or affliction lock (dot classes that don't scale well with haste), there just aren't many trinket opinion out there. If you're hit capped from other sources and haven't downed hard-mode 25 Vezax, this is the ONLY 226+ trinket you'd consider. Guess we'll be holding on to IDS for a while longer!

From about 10 minutes testing this on a target dummy:
-The Pillar of Flame has no graphic
-Living bomb tick's do not proc motes. I cannot speak for other DoTs, but so far it doesn't look so good.
-Living bomb's explosion did proc motes
-The Pillar can crit
-The crits do not proc ignite for a fire mage
-You cannot aquire a more mote often than 2 seconds. While aoeing, I would get multiple crits, but only gain one mote in the 2 second span. I also spammed ice lance, and back to back crits would result in only one mote gained
-Spell damage does not appear to affect the proc

some info from recount(i am a fire mage)
----------Min----------Avg----------Max-----count
hit -----1741--------1936---------2051-------20
Crit-----2807---------2969-------3200-------10
out of 30 counts it did 68404 damage. its not much. getting a few more crits than somebody else can make up for that.
but the 150 passive spell power...that is indeed nice.
i have 66% crit fully raid buffed for my fireball.
66%-5% glyph=61%
-3% imp scorch=58%(this right here being my all around fire crit while buffed with Gift and Kings as well as the below buffs)
-3% FM proc= 55%
-3% Fm base=52%
-5% boomkin aura=47%
so lacking of crit is not something i have. if anything im making this proc as often as it can given its 2 second GCD.
this recount is from Old Kingdom(daily on my server today). i'll try and post meters from raid tonight. maybe with more buffs it will scale better.

So how much better is this trinket for a fire mage than say, Scale of Fates or Eye of the Broodmother? Is it slightly better or is it definitely a solid upgrade from either?

VERY good trinket for any and all spell casters. And this is in no a way a post trying to claim that the item is any better for class A than class B, but casters who primarily use Fire spells WILL get slightly more out of it. Destruction warlocks and fire mages are going to want to bid max DKP on this. This is because, as others have stated, the proc receives benefit from all talants that increase fire spell damage, as long as the talents are not restricted to a specific spell.
As a destro warlock, it generally:
-Hits for around 2200 on average. Never lower than 2k.
-Crits about 40% of the time (this is dependant on your spell crit rating though).
-Crits for about 3200-3500.
-Makes up 2.8% of my overall damage. This number RARELY changes. Have seen it at 2.9% once.
Only gripe I have is that motes cannot be gained more often than every 2 seconds. For a destro lock, that hurts. Our dps is based around fast casting. Our spell with the longest cast time is 2 sec, and about 1/3 of the time our spell casting speed is reduced by 30%. Conflagrate is also an instant cast (and has an extremely high crit chance.. 25% higher than our other spells). But it's still a small price to pay for such a well functioning trinket.

There actually is a graphic for this trinket as well as a sound effect, but both are very minor. When you have 2 motes stacked and the 3rd one procs the pillar, you get a firey ring around your hands and can hear a whumphing fireblast-like sound.

According to Rawr, this is a straight up DPS increase of 270 with my 57/3/11 Arcane with Incanter specc for a mage.

Is there any arcane-mage here who own the item and want to do some reporting?
I have read the above comments several times but maybe i missed it.
btw, the ilvl258
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47188
is a straight up 339 DPS x) 3 words if its a fact... GOD DAMN IT!
Update:
Got this one yesterday! :>
Going to do some testing but the small amount of time ive tried it out last night it gave me 200-250 overall DPS boost,
in a 10 man raid, not perfect balanced group (no boomkin xD) but im satisfied with the results for now.
Im also going to submit some firespecc results as fast as i have em!

Very nice in PvP for any class that can crit a lot.
The spell power is better than any pvp trinket (in season 6), and there is the proc..
Because the proc comes always with a crit it's very bursty. The buff stacks have no duration so you can sit on it and bide your time. Hence it helping if you sort of control when to crit (shatter mages, ele shammans, some others).
I use it on my moonkin. Starfall can stack the buffs in a about 5 secs almost guaranteed and the proc fires on your current target. You can also sort of predict incoming wrath crits by tracking your Nature's Grace buff, so you can tell when a wrath flying through the air will crit. When you see NG go up cast 1 more wrath (you're probably spamming it when NG showed anyways) then moonfire + engineering hand rockets. 2 wraths, (1 crit) and a moonfire, hand rockets and the trinket proc all land in ~1 second. Very nice burst.

interesting fact: you can gain motes of flame from certain weapon procs (thunderfury for example) so long as its a spell proc not a physical proc, gets some funny reactions from people when you and a caster friend try a mele fight and one of you suddenly takes 2-3k health off in a mele swing

I'll just say this. There is no other class that benefits more from this than Elemental Shamans. Our procs and talents increase the damage of this trinket by 10% during Elemental Oath. Our talents increase fire damage, and fire crits which effect this trinket procs. Fire mages and destro locks also may benefit from this trinket, but none of them can increase its damage by 10% + Fire damage from talents like Elemental Shaman can. Elemental should be prio 1. Recap, elemental fury talent increases crit damage of fire spells by 100% including trinket proc. Elemental Oath increases trinket proc damage by 10% also. 90% of elemental damage is from direct spells not DoT. Perfect for Ele, not for fire mage. Fire mage gains less from it than Ele.
