The level 80 version of

, a popular and solid choice for raiding melee classes.

This gem will give about .46% crit chance at level 80.

This should be a very popular gem if you are seeking profits from regular sales.
Demand from a PvE raid perspective:
Chaotic Skyflare: Ret Pal, DPS DK, DPS War, Mage, Destro Lock, Ele Sham, Moonkin
Compared to:
Relentless Earthsiege: Rogues, Hunters, Enh Sham, Feral Druid
Insightful Earthsiege: Holy Pal, Holy Priest, Resto Sham, Resto Druid, Disc Priest
Eternal Earthsiege: Prot War, Prot Pal
Austere Earthsiege: Feral Druid Tank, DK tank
Ember Skyflare: Afflict Locks, Shadow Priests
In reality, I've had almost every type of meta sell in TBC. There may be the odd demand for Bracing (spell power and -2% threat), but all the caster DPS in my guild tell me that they can manage without.
From a PvP perspective:
Swift Skyflare continues to be a popular melee gem, but since it's from a trainer, the AH is flooded with them from JCs looking to skill-up.
Timeless hasn't sold much yet. I haven't yet got a "pro" opinion on the meta. IMO, the 3% bonus crit damage is much more valuable than run speed and if you want run speed, you should get it only your boots or from talents.
All the other metas (-stun/charm/root duration, spell reflect, etc.) seem to have bonuses that are too situational or have unreliable or unnoticeable benefits.

Chaotic Skyflare: Ret Pal, DPS DK, DPS War, Mage, Destro Lock, Ele Sham, Moonkin
This is not EXACTLY true. Assuming you have more than 2 blue socket bonuses (which of course are beneficial), we can assume these are true, but if you only really need to fill one of the blue socket bonuses, the Relentless Earthsiege Diamond is better. (For warriors, paladins, and DK's.)
A warrior recieves 1% crit from 62.5 agi. with kings this is 23.1 agi, which, in a raid environment, is always going to be there.
This adds up to .3796% crit. (relentless earthsiege)
21 crit rating from this socket is equal to .457% crit, unaffected by kings.
Now, assuming you only have 1 beneficial blue socket in your items (more than likely), you can now socket a different gem, for example, +16 crit, as opposed to needing the +8 crit +12 stam gem (this is pre-epic gems, in which case, would only increase the bonus).
So you gain 8 crit from that, due to the unnecessity of the stam.
8 crit = .174 crit %.
so .174% crit + the .3796% crit = .5535 crit, which is ~.1% higher than .457% from the 21 crit rating.
Death knights recieve the same amount of crit from agi as warriors, but paladins recieve even more, making this gem even less beneficial than the agi/crit one.
This is, of course, ignoring the fact that you can also socket for strength instead of crit, which is better for dps. I'd theorycraft, but that'd take 20 minutes.
So, depending on your need for sockets, the relentless earthsiege diamond is better. Glad to help :D

Just to point this out to any PvP'ers considering this gem, both Hateful Gladiator's and Deadly Gladiator's Gauntlets and Leg-gear have a blue socket, so you can meet the prerequisites for this gem without having to use PvE gear if you gem for the socket bonus.

Great gem, and for those doing the math on how much the second blue hurts you compared to the relentless earthsiege consider that it's generally accepted that JC/BS is the most potent profession combo. As a JC you get access to 3 prismatic gems easily filling the requirement for this meta without sacrificing anything. It really is the only way to go if you have the gold or guildies to fund such a combo.

This one stack with the mage tier7 (4) set bonus right?

Ember Skyflare: Afflict Locks, Shadow Priests
I completely disagree.
Ember Skyflare Diamond
Say you have 1000 Int. +2% Int = +20 Intellect.
20 Intellect for a Shadow Priest at level 80 is +0.12% spell crit.
So you're getting +25sp, +0.12% spell crit at level 80.
Versus
Chaotic Skyflare Diamond
21 crit rating at level 80 is 0.46% spell crit.
It also adds a +3% critical strike damage bonus.
And in case you don't know,
Shadowform
got buffed, meaning for every 1% in spell crit you have, all your DoTs gain +1% damage. AND they crit more often. AND with the Chaotic Skyflare, you get +3% crit damage bonus.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

I was using the Relentless (21 agi 3% +crit dmg) the second i got my spiked titansteel helm. For a few reasons.
1: CHEAP
2: EASY to socket
HOWEVER! I am now finishing my Jewelcrafting and therefore this one is a bit better. 2 Bold Dragons Eye and there we go.
I was using Chardev.org and i think it said..
Relentless (21agi) --> Chaotic (21crit) was about a .12% increase to crit (the chaotic).
PS: I am an arms warrior(switching fury since my gear is much more suited) currently on Arthas Horde. I are Vanilla WoW! And when WOTLK came out i restarted my warrior finding out that he was naked. Was fun leveling in Hellfire with AH items

This should be a popular choice with enhance shaman as well.
RED gives 21 Agi which is roughly .25% crit for just physical attacks and 21 AP.
Compare that to .63% for both physical and spell damage and things get a lot fuzzier.
Consider that Enhance shaman that are good will spec Elemental Devastation so that every spell crit will give them 9% more melee crit, this gem feeds itself. Not only are the spells doing more, but they are causing more melee crits. Additionally the spell damage is likely to be improved with Elemental Fury so it is not like the crit on the spell side is a small contribution.
With enhance currently throwing lightning bolts, magma totems, lightning shield charges, shocks, lava lash, and possibly flametongue on the off-hand the amount of spell damage they do is creeping up to 50% of their total damage. This gem shines with such a system.
I'd actually go with this over the RED as long as you can not get too punished getting 2 blue gems instead of 1.

Does this give an actual 9% increase in crit damage with Ruin like the old

did?

I would like to point out that the
CSD
meta over the
ESD
meta is by no means a slam dunk for Shadow Priests.
While Crit rating can by no means be underestimated for Shadow Priests (especially with the new crit-ability of initial DoT damage, the Glyph of Shadow, and the buff to Shadowform), it's important to recognize that it all depends on your current gear/stats at the time and what is most needed.
The ESD is perfectly designed for SPriests; it only requres RED gems to activate (which SPriests use all the time). The CSD, on the other hand, requires 2 BLUE gems to activate, this means not only losing 25 SP by not using the ESD, but also losing another 20 SP by having to swap out 2 blue gems (+9SP, +8 Spi) in place of 2 red gems (+19SP).
So, you have to realize that this .46% crit chance and 3% increased crit damage (100% --> 103%...so-so) comes at a cost of no less than 45 SP, which is a LOT when you consider how many spells you cast during a boss fight.
If you've already got a lot of crit under your belt, and get crit buffs in raids, then the extra .46% may not be worth it (especially considering you get ~.1% from the INT bonus from the ESD).
Just more food for thought. Good Luck!

One thing that really disappoints me here is that:
Apply Aura: Mod Crit Damage Bonus (Melee) (895)
Just click on the 3% increased critical damage text. According to this it ONLY works for melee hits. There has been a lot of theorycrafting around this gem but no one has confirmed the 3% bonus for casters yet and I care about that.
So IF the info here IS correct it's basically useless for all casters. Oh and also Hunters.
So please either show me that I am wrong or add whatever data is missing to the spell description.
Edit: Link added.

Edit 2: Issue solved.
Someone in the forums pointed out that thottbot shows different data:
Chaotic Skyflare Diamond (Thottbot)
=> If you click on the spell details it shows
Apply Aura: Mod Crit Damage Bonus (Physical, Holy, Fire, Nature, Frost, Shadow, Arcane)
while on wowhead only melee damage is listed. So it was a case of missing data and the meta gem is useful for all the classes.

I notice some confusion on this gem so I will shamelessly repost what I posted on the agility gem's page:
A while ago I detailed the gem's predecessor and it's effects:
http://www.wowhead.com/?item=32409#comments:id=222694
Allow me to summarize:
The gem is the last thing to be calculated in your damage, so it takes the damage you would have received and multiplies it by
103%
, (but in tests the yield was slightly higher than 103%,) so a regular melee crit of 200% would be
206%
, a crit of 230% would be
236.9%
instead, and so on so forth.
In short, your critical's final damage is boosted by
3%
.
In addition, this works for all spell damage crits as well, as tested briefly on my mage.
Hope that helps.

Does the
Chaotic Skyflare Diamond
metagem also raise the effect of healing crits, a la
Revitalizing Skyflare Diamond
?

Yes, it is also recommended by
Ensidia's Mage guide
. (Ensidia is the guild with the most World Firsts.)
Your metagem should always be Chaotic Skyflare Diamond.

Seems to be the best choice for Shadow Priests. Purified Dreadstone should be used as blue gems to activate it:

The nerfs to crit from agi for plate classes, in addition to Hit's new blue status, makes this the gem of choice for pretty much any strength-based DPS in 4.0.1.

The new requirements for this meta make it terrible for most of the melee dps class that would of used it after the agility change.

No Longer the best choice for Casters due to the requirement change during Patch 4.0.3a
Комментарий от
thranathiril
Good news everyone! Well, sort of..
The retarded changes to most DPS meta gem requirements that Blizz brought in in patch 4.0.3a are to be changed bac to what they were before said patch. Unfotunately, this is claimed to be not something that they can correct via hotfix, and therefore we have to wait for some future, unspecified, patch.

I guess that now arcane mages will use Ember Skyflare Diamond instead, as this one has gotten very ugly requirements for dpses since last patch....
