Which is what I was referring to when I said it was a crappy piece of design.
Or you just have crappy friends?

I deleted the mail, thinking it was just another scam.

You've just described exactly why I don't like it. Everyone you add can see that you're online every time your online. You can say goodbye to that secret alt you play when you just want to chill out.
I would argue that if you can't tell your friend that you don't want to be bothered and have him respect that, then he's not a good enough friend to be added to Real ID.
I can tell them I don't want to be disturbed but prior to RealID, I didn't need to.
So you're complaining about the 2 seconds it takes to type out "Busy, don't disturb"? Or the 1 second it takes to set your status to Busy? Or the .5 seconds it takes to type /dnd

I disagree, it's not a crappy piece of design. It's a solution to a widely-experienced problem with an easily-fixable flaw.
Ray Charles did heroin, but he was still a great musician. Real ID doesn't have an invisible function, but it's still a great tool.

The reality here is that customers playing a game online want features that are found in FREE services... like MSN, Facebook and many more... the issue with RealID is that it lacks control... and people have a right to control information.
WoW isn't any of those things. Real ID isn't any of those things. It's like complaining that lemon juice isn't is sweet as orange juice.
Imagine meeting someone cross realm in LFD and being able to form a group with them to run heroics and make more friends online.. instead RealID has a very narrow scope of use now...
That's not was it was intended or designed for.

I would only use it with my best mate who is moving a char to a different realm and possibly his gf who is also a good mate of mine. Other than that why the hell I would give out the email that is my login id to effectivly a compleat stranger over the internet! Agree with some of the more cautious people.

It's nice to keep in touch with friends I have on other realms that I've known for almost a few years, but I don't see myself using it for very many people.
It does have it's uses though.
You're right, it is a little bit too... open and it could definitely use some refinement around the privacy aspect of it, along with other things. (Really? Only 3 people in a conversation? Weak.)
Overall, it's a nice tool, but it's a brand-new feature guys, it'll get its refinements.
Just look at the Dungeon Finder. They're still tweaking it.

... What the heck is RealID?
Man, I must really be out of the loop, ya leave WoW for two weeks and everything is all topsyturvy now.
I'm guessing it has something to do with Blizzard linking games together, but I'm not positive.

You're right. WoW isn't any of those. It's a game. What they've done to Battle.net is an attempt at turning Bnet into Facebook. That's the friends of friends and full legal name part. That's the part people want to control.

You mean
it wasn't intended for making and staying connected with friends
? Well, my mind is blown. Care to elaborate on its proper usage?
Ffs, read the gd FAQ. If you're too lazy to, it's not mine or Blizzard's fault.

Like many WoW players, you seem to have a foggy notion of this thing called "real life."
And the "they" in the second thing you quoted refers to "people" .... i.e. you. So, no, not people who are new to you.
To sum everything up: If you don't know and trust the person in real life, don't add them. And if you don't have any such friends, don't blame Blizzard.

Simple question will you use Real ID?
I'm sorry some people have the paranoia of thinking they are in danger if any information is shared among others. I really don't care who has my email, my login name, or who knows my real name. What does it matter if they do? Send you a bad email? Hack your account? murder your family? Blizzard has already taken this into account when they introduced the feature. If you're account is hacked, or if you are dead - then you cant play the game, and thus will stop paying for it - and they definitely do not want that.
I use realID for most of my friends just because i dont want a clusterf*** of alts on my friends' list.
