Felwood
.
1. Yes it was part of Ashenvale.
2. The duel between Illidan and Tichondrius caused most of the corruption, as did the Emo-King consuming the Skull's magic, spreading the fel taint even farther across the lands.
3. Unknown.
4. The area where Felwood is was on the march during War of the Ancients; they fled before the Legion then, returned and repopulated it, with the help of the Furbolgs. Then the start of end of the Third War happened, and the regular Night Elves withdrew, but the Circle and the Sentinels remained behind.

Not much, as the Skull was taken there by the Legion and started to be used as a great spell foci.... but then the Scourge told Illidan, who, like the good like puppet he is, went after it, hungering for more power.
Reign of Chaos
This section concerns content exclusive to Warcraft III.
Years later it would appear again on Azeroth, this time used by the Burning Legion to corrupt the forests of Felwood. The skull's powers were eventually consumed by Illidan Stormrage who, upon absorbing its power, became half night elf and half demon. With his newfound power, he struck a major blow to the Legion by killing Tichondrius. Illidan retained memories of the Tomb of Sargeras from Gul'dan, which he used in tandem with his own knowledge of Suramar to find the Eye of Sargeras.
Exactly how the Legion regained the Skull is unknown. Beyond the Dark Portal establishes that Khadgar intended for it to return to Azeroth, but it is vague as to what happened. The fact that Gul'dan's spirit lingered on within the Skull was long speculated by some, and this feature may explain some of Illidan's behavior

Actually, I think the Skull of Gul'dan was used to corrupt the forests and then, when Illidan consumed it, the corruption stopped. Effectively ''sealing the Legion's defeat'', according to Kil'jaeden.
Except again, for that whole duel thing, and then Emo-King stomping out of the forest on fire with demon energies....in game, wherever he walked while transformed, the land withered under his feet.

Yes the Skull was the original corruption... then you had the fight between a Dreadlord and a power hungry power mad Demon Hunter throwing around spells and demonic energies; that probably increased the effect of the skull till Illidan consumed it, which probably had an effect on the surrounding area; it did transform him from a mortal into a half-demon after all.
Tomb Isle was already corrupted; happens when several thousand demons come streaming out of it and destroy two full clans worth of Orcs and Ogres. And there is corruption all through out Ashenvale... Felfire hill for one, the Satyr camps for another, even the Howling Moon vale; that was one of the reasons why the Scythe of Elune happened; the corruption from Felwood was still leaking south in Ashenvale, and the Night Elf sentinel wanted to stop it.

/shrug You see fel magic causing a lot of corruption in the Warcraft universe; from the effects of Draenor, to the Blight and destruction from the Scourge(when they were part of the Legion). If it was just the Skull alone, then as you said, the corruption should have stopped completely.... except it didn't; again, why was the Scythe of Elune used to summon the Worgen? To fight the continuing corruption from Felwood that was seeping south.

Am I saying that the use of Fel Magic didn't cause the corruption of Felwood? Not really, no. Perhaps a small area was poisoned by the green fires of demons - and that really isn't ''most of the corruption'' as you said.Armies of Demons walking through. Third strongest demon on Azeroth perishing there against a creature who took up the power of the Fel. The fight against Tichondrious had an effect on the over all corruption, as did Illidan's actions, mixed in with the corruption spell already leaking off of the Skull..... the same spell that was probably tied into Emo-King once he 'ate' the Skull.
But we can stop here; we're not going to come to anything that either of us like, and if we keep pushing, it will probably turn into an argument.

I'm not saying that your theory is without merit. But without a citation to back it up, its nothing more than a theory and as such, shouldn't be the answer to someone's question of Lore.

I found that on the Skull of Gul'dan page; Illidan absorbed the Skull first, stopping the corruption from the spell... then went after the Dreadlord; again, between the Third strongest Demon on the planet at the time and the newly powered Half-Demon, the fight between the two of them probably ended up blighting a lot of the forest and spreading the corruption farther. And you still had both the Scourge and the Legion marching through the lands, which would cause more corruption and damage.

The bolded words show that the citation in question doesn't back your theory.
I could see the Fight thing... but not the other one; we know that where the Scourge and Legion goes, the land suffers.... I mean, most of northern Lordaeron proves that after all.

They also didn't walk through all of Eversong; once they passed the Ghostlands, having taken down the Runestones, they made a beeline for Silvermoon and the Isle to get at the Sunwell. A large section of Ashenvale was corrupted by the Legion though, where Mannoroth fell. As for Alterac and Hillsbrad.... why would they be affected? The main Scourge/Legion army didn't walk through there; they came at Dalaran either over the Lake or through Silverpine, then traveled north again.
Felwood's corruption was mainly due to the fact that it was the only path into Hyjal that the Legion/Scourge could get into the mount to get at the World Tree.
