There are three ways to go about doing this quest.

First and most obvious, complete the instances. The fragment from Steamvault is at the bottom of the pond leading up to the Naga boss. The fragment from Arcatraz is on the right side of the room where the first boss (a voidwalker) is at.

Second, you can "borrow" someoen's completed instances. Do a /who check on who's doing the instances and ask them if they can preserve the group after they've cleared it. Then, simply go in and acquire the fragments.

Third, if you're a druid or a rogue, then you can actually solo (if u're a rogue) or duo (if u're a driud) this. Second fragment is straightforward, stealthing into the pond wouldn't be a problem at all if you had at least 1 point into Master of Deception/feral instinct. The third fragment from arcatraz is slightly more difficult. You need to go through a narrow tunnel before you reach the room with the fragment, and in that tunnel sits a mechanical bot that does an AoE lightning zap which hits all targets around him every 2 seconds. If you're a rogue, then turn on sprint and run through him, and vanish until AFTER you're well out of the range of his lightning (which is around 15 yards). If you're a druid, then you must have another rogue or druid to help you pull him away; note that, even if you are hit by his lightning, you won't get into combat, so just wait for prowl to cooldown after u get hit by the lightning, and run into the room.

The second key is soloable for a lvl 68+mage. Train invisiblity, buy some invisibility potions and go into Steamvaults(second instance on the left). Get as close to the first set of mobs as you can, pop invisibility, run dead center(the bog lords to the left and right can detect invis) then a little to the right after the first stone column(about a 100 meter run from start to pool). Just as invis is running out pop a invis potion and dive into the pool. The arcane container is at the bottom of the pool(20 meters down)

The above poster is correct!
I soloed it as a mage. I pulled the 2 initial mobs to me and frost nove to keep them into position. This gives you a little more room to burn with the invisibility skill. When there's 1 sec left, use the potion!

For rogue:

1st key fragment: /who Shadow Labyrinth - ask them to invite you after they kill the boss, go in and pick fragment, go back to Khadgar
2nd key fragment - Stealth through mobs @ start, few distracts here and there and dive into big pool on right side of 1st boss in Steamvault
3rd key fragment - Stealth in Arcatraz, if you have key or 350 LP (you should have), wait @ start till those beeings cease a bit attack on defenders and stealth through, pass 2 big rooms and pick glass stairway up, you will see some mobs on passage - Sentinel is the one that you shall be carefull about, he have that lightning attack - stealth, sprint, Clos (no need for vanish, save it if needed for void room), once you pass sentinel make right turn and you will see container

There is an easy way and a hard way to do this quest easy way is to just /who steamvaults and /who Arcatraz, and ask the people in there can you come in when there done to get your key, the hard way is to do the instance. GL with this quest :)

Looted 3rd key fragment last night. (70 Mage)
You will need 2 swiftness potions and 1 invisibility potion.
Of course you may want to bring more in case you fail. You will need either a rogue or someone with the key to open the door.
You will also need a soulstone from a lock.

Once you enter the instance walk to the middle of the stairs, use the swiftness potion then cast invisibility. If you use the potion after invis it will negate the invis.

Run through the hall and make a right into the corner and keep yourself as close to the way as possible. ( you will see mobs constantly passing by as they are battling those elves)
Once the invis cooldown is up, cast it and run as far as you can until 2 seconds are left then use the invis pot and run up the ramp. On the ramp there is a usually a 69 non-elite protean who pats around, just kill it. There are also 3 corpses before the hallway with the sentry. Sheep all 3 so they despawn. Do not sheep the body next to the sentry it will aggro.
Once the invis cooldown is up cast ice barrier (if you have it), mana shield and if you have fel blossoms (from herbing) then use swiftness pot and invis and run through the hallway into the room with the voidwalkers and hook an immediate right. The container is in the corner. The sentry will aggro once you run past it while invis but it has a slight delay before attacking, just keep refreshing mana shield and use a ruby if needed. Blink to the corner and die then wait for the voidwalker to pat far enough away, then soulstone and loot. Hope this helps. (got this from youtube)

Third "keeper" of the key can also be soloed by a rogue.

Keepers are melee only, around 20k hp, stunnable, gougeable and blind works too (yay). Problem in the arcatraz one is that you will probably get in the end also the big voidwalker to tease you. Had prep build so 2xevasion was good enough and just before I died was able to loot the shard.

So GG bliz on trying to "nerf" this trick, rogues prevail ;)

Solo'd Steamvaults key last night as 70 mage using no pots. I was slow spec'd for the spawned key guard though. Just run through first 2 guards, FN, pop invis, blink left. Run straight through to water, blinking right as invis wears off. Easy. You can eat/drink right on the pool lip w/o aggroing the mobs behind you.

70 Rogue, just solo'ed the third fragment. Here's how...

In the room with the sentinal, there are also two larvae-work things. They're non-elite and can be killed quite easily. You can pull them from the corner without aggroing the sentinal.

In the Voidwalker (VW) room there are 3 mobs to worry about. The first is a fleshling beast. He's non-elite, just pull him into the sentinal room and kill him. The second mob that poses an issue is a VW that patrols from the center of the room to the doorway of the sentinal room. Third, there is another VW that patrols from the center of the room to the arcane container. These patrols are random, but every once in a while they do match up. The weakness in the room is when they are both in the middle of the room.

First, open the arcane container. If you have good timing and a little luck, you can stealth as the container opens and the keeper spawns. If not, just vanish. After the keeper spawns, the trick is to wait until both the VWs are in the center of the room. Distract them there to ensure they stay in the middle for a few extra seconds. Next, run over to the keeper and gun/bow/throw pull him. Have him follow you back to the sentinal room, and kill him there.

This way you don't have to deal with voidwalkers, and you can take your time on the keeper.

Just did this as a druid prowled to the bottom of the lake opened it's container and realized that I should of read more about this quest when the guardian cought me off guard. I was lucky had tank set on but it took 1 healing pot 1 Nagrand cherry (underwater breathing) and one barkskin/HT/Regrowth to live through it .

If I had paid attention it would of been an easy fight.

Solo'd second key fragment as a Hunter. Sent pet as distraction to mobs and Aspect of the cheetah through the clear path, when pet dies FD. Pop an invisibilty potion to get to the water, rez pet then drink/eat on the edge of the water. Casted misdirection on pet and dropped in immolation trap before i spawned the guard. Used mend pet once then @ 50% I freeze trapped the guard and bandaged pet, got range and sent him back in, FD so he had aggro then used rapid fire and went all out to finish him. Very easy. On my way to try third .

I did the second and third key fragments easy. I got a group of people from my guild together who all needed the key. Went into the instances and trashed them. We all got the key and therefore the attunment and had a lot of fun doing so.

Just cus you can solo, doesnt mean you should.

While it's nice that so many classes are capable of soloing these key fragments, let's all take some time to remember that instances were intended for groups.

Don't forget to ask people on your friend or guild list (at least) if they are also in need of the key fragment you're going for. It's much more efficient to go in as a group and wreck up the joint than it is to cunningly solo up to them and miss out on four other people you could run Karazhan with not having their fragments completed.

While its nice you're able to play peak times, or have enough people in guild on the same part of the key. I'd prefer to solo it :)

You can actually still use the "borrow instance" strategy as of 2.10. Even though blizzard supposedly fixed it in 2.07, it is still possible to get the key fragement in a completed instance. As long as nobody that ran the instance earlier needed to get it. As of 2.07 when you open the arcane container, a elite mob comes out and attacks you. The mob is fairly easy to solo as it has only 15k hp and is stunlockable (to my fellow rogues). Once you kill this mob you can loot him for the key fragment.

I just soloed both these fragments and wanted to give some tips on the 3rd fragment (the one in arcatraz) It was much more involved then the steamvualt's second fragment.

First have at least 350 lock picking or the arcatraz key.

Once inside, there is a short hallway at the end of which there is a larger circular room with a fight going on. Fleshling style mobs are running to into the room opposite the side you entered on. Blood elves are killing them quickly. I moved to the side of the doorway the fleshlings are coming through then waited for the BE frontline to finish off one of the bigger black fleshlings then when the rest hug the narrow hallway's wall and move into the next room (with 5 ranks of MOD you practically have to touch hall mobs to pull aggro).

The next room was my least favorite part. The first time through was a breeze cause i got lucky with the timing. After that I realized that the right side of the room (where the next hallway is) was where the fleshings for the first room were spawning. If they repop on you your sunk or have to use a vanish. Hugging the wall to the right when you enter the room gave me the best results. Enter the next hallway paying mind to those corpses on the floor (all BE corpses in here spawn fleshlings.. don't walk on them.

After this short hallway, there will be a translucent ramp straight ahead and to your right. Hug a side of this ramp and head up it. It will straighten out towards the top then narrow to a small hallway. There is a sentinel on the left side of this hallway in its center. Be sprinting when you enter the hall and immediately after entering the hall use Cloak of Shadows. You should resist his laser.. if you don’t... use vanish. Hug the right wall after exiting the hallway. The fragment container is on this wall. Move to the corner by the container then wait for the voidwalker patrol to move to the center of the room. I like every reasonable advantage when I’m fighting an elite of my level so I did this.

Drink Potions. If you have an agility and mongoose, DRINK THE MONGOOSE FIRST. If you drink agility pots first mongoose will override them. Take whatever else you like… then keep either a health pot , armor pot or invulnerability pot handy for the fight. In short, buff up.

When the voidwalker has patrolled away open the container. Put 5 combo points on the guardian then vanish. Wait 5 minutes for vanish to cool down ( I waited in the same corner as the guardian).

Then the fight. When the voidwalker patrols away he pauses sometimes before he clears the wall (the wall to your right when you stand in the corner and face the guardian). He is still in aggro range here. Once he moves away, DPS the crap out of the guardian. Use all your cool downs but save evasion (unless you have prep) in case the voidwalker comes back earlier … if it looks like you will kill the guardian before the voidwalker comes back go ahead and pop evasion too. Keep in mind the guardian can be stunned and poisoned too!

Buffed, I had about 7k Hp and about the best gear you could quest by yourself plus a couple of instance drops. My armory profile is under the same name, I’m convinced mace spec saved me. When I did kill him I had him and the voidwalker pounding on me and 44 health left D:

Good luck. Also I recommend doing this fragment first so you can laugh at how easy the steam vault one is :D

Did both the second and third key fragments this afternoon. The second fragment really isn't very difficult at all as a 70 rogue. I only had one point into MoD and it made a very noticeable difference. Once you get to the pool (which really only takes like 30 seconds from the zone in) you can take all the time in the world on the elemental, so you can blind/bandage, etc without worry of adds as mentioned above.

The third fragment is way more difficult in comparison, don't expect to get it your first shot. Nirodha's run through is excellent by the way. Using CoS through the lightning works wonders, but do be sure you don't get antsy and hit it too early into the tunnel or it will run out before you clear it and you gotta blow vanish. Moreover, you could find yourself running straight through a voidwalker or the little horror dudes and then you're toast =)

Be wary of positioning, too close to the sentinel and he'll jump you, too close to the bloodelf corpse and you got bugs. Each run through there was kind of hit or miss to some extent.

The fight itself is pretty straightforward again, the problem being you REALLY have to unload in order to get the elemental down before the voidwalker paths too close. Expect the voidwalker to aggro and use evasion and vanish near the end.

If you have trouble killing him in time, Zemmstervex's alternative listed here works too albeit a lot of patience is needed. If those two VW aren't right smack in the center, they will for sure aggro you while pulling the elemental.

Solo'd as a Mage 70. I took a speed potion and got invisible so I could go to the stone pillarbetween the first boss and the path to the second boss. Then took a Major Defense and Mastery Potion to kill the mob. Ended the fight with 284 HP.
I would recommand doing this with a group, but it's so much challenging alone :p

I used another group's instance for 3rd fragment but I had to do Steamvault to get the 2nd because I can't stealth as a Paladin... I tried invisibility potion but it makes every NPC invisible too so I just walked into a patrol without knowing like an idiot, you know the rest...

The key guardian, despite looking like a VW, classes as a beast. Druids can just Hibernate and Starfire it; it's not immune. I did this for the second key fragment. It took me a while, but I never got hit once.

the second key fragment is extremely easy to get if u are rogue or druid.u just have to solo the 70elite which drops the key.and its easy to get there(only have to watch out for the giants which detect invisibility).carry some pots with you in case u need hem for the elite.easiest thing is to get another rogue/druid to do it with you.
the third key fragment is hard to solo since its impossible not to pull the nearby voidwalker.but you just have to find a party which has completed the instance in order to invite you and let you in.make sure they havent opened the container in that run.

It is possible to do this as a Warrior solo also.. kind of tricky though.

You'll need a soulstone from a warlock.

Pop on tanking gear and go in defensive stance.

Second, run as close as you can to the first mobs, pop an invisiblity potion and then use your nifty stopwatch, run around to the left (to avoid the stealth detecting giant mob) and get as close to the water as you can, by the time you are around there, your invisibility will be wearing off, so you must die between the hallway and the pack of 4 mobs there, make sure you can use the soulstone in a safe spot, because you'll need to be out of combat when you res up to use another invis pot.

Once you res, use the next pot and jump to water.. open thing and kill mob.. get fragment.

Of course it might be easier finding a group to just do this, since you have to wait 10 minutes to use the potion again, but meh, if you know a warlock that won't mind soulstoning you I guess it's worth it.

Today I got the first 2 keyfragments in notime, real easy to do! but getting the third keyfragment as a lvl 68 seems pretty impossible :O Since you need a flying mount to enter Arcatraz and you can't be summoned by a warlock in Netherstorm, which leads to being forced to lvl to 70 and get a flying mount before you are able to enter Arcatraz :((

Allthough, druids can have flightform at lvl 68, so they can go there anyways.. nerf!

All the comments regarding what to do, to obtain the Third Key Fragment are great, I would like to add something I just did with a group of 4. After clearing trash in the Arcatraz up to the archway into the First boss's room we all simply used Invisibility Potions, ran to the Ramp, done. :) None of us were stealth class (Enhance Shaman, Resto Shaman, Hunter and Warlock). Easiest key run ever :D

did the SV key frag as a resto shaman solo. here's how:

buy some invis potions. go into the instance as close to the first mobs as you can. drink invis potion and run straight and then turn right at the pillar. now this is the hard part (i'm an engineer so i had the rocket boots) the potion will be wearing off around that first pillar and you need to atleast make it into the water. you can try to drop the earth elemental totem and put Earth shield on yourself. or find some other trinket that will help you survive till you get in the water.

once in the water let them kill you and use reincarnation. you can get back out of the water as long as you stay right at the edge so you can drink/eat.

now you can most likely solo the key frag gaurdian but i decided to use my fire elemental to speed things up. kill the guy and get the frag.

Note that you need the ability to fly to get to the third key fragment. A Warlock cannot summon you up to the entrance platform.

The 2nd key fragment in Steamvault can easily be soloed as a 70 druid,
prowl/sprint to the water. Cast regrowth and rejuvenation before opening the Arcane Container then bear form and mangle/maul away (may want to bash then heal if required ,make sure you swim back up so you don't drown :)

Just solo'd the 2nd frag as a 70 feral druid (0/50/11). Been 70 for only a few hours, in greens and blues with 8.5k HP in catmode. I stealthed thru... which lemme tell ya it's crowded in SV, all the elementals walkin' around, I was nervous about gettin' seen, the Boglords 100% you need to avoid the detect invisible.

Found the container, opened it, changed to cat, dps'd him popped my trinkets until he had me to 50% HP, then I deformed, HP pot, bear mode, finish. Ended the fight close to death, but got er done.

I'm omw to Arcatraz right now, have a rogue guildmate meetin' me there.

Okay, after 5 tries, I don't see how anyone can solo the third frag. Unless you can take down the guardian in 8 seconds, you're gonna get agro off one of the patrols.

u'll get the secoun key from SV its in the water before the first boss then u have to do ARC after the first boss u go up there is a place that have alot of shadow elementals in the right of the entrance of that room u'll find the third frag !

Easily soloed as a 70 BM hunter. Used one invis pot to get in... here's how I did it.

1: Pull the 1st double pack. Trap one, and run by the other wing clipping it. Make sure you time this pull so you can run out into the open past them without getting the pathers on you.

2: As you run past where they were standing, you can run straight out into an open area of sorts. Go as far as you can while still allowing you to feign, and get back up without entering combat. (IF YOU MESS THIS PART UP YOU WILL ENTER COMBAT. YOU CANNOT USE AN INVIS POT WHILE IN COMBAT!)

3: Feign, and get back up. As soon as you're up put on aspect of the cheetah and pop an invis pot. the 15 seconds of invisibility is enough to get all the way to the ramp above the water, or into the water.

4: From here all you have to do is loot the container with an immolation trap down, and heal your pet as you kill it. Mend pet is just enough to keep your pet long enough while you dps the mob down. I would suggest standing back a ways, and dpsing as much as you can until you pull aggro from the pet. Wait until the mob gets to you or even hits you once and then feign. This will allow your mend pet to heal your pet up a bit.

5: Hearth out.

I only tried it once and my pet died as I killed it. I'm sure if I wasn't a 3 hour old 70 I could have done it much easier, but still not too much of a challenge. I did all the running with my full gear on, but I lost so little health on the 1st pull that I could have easily done it naked for safety. Good luck everyone!

As many have said here, if you're a feral druid, don't bother trying to get a group for the second key frag. It is so easy to stealth in and kill the guardian while in bear form. I didn't even have to heal since he didn't get me below 65%.

Hunters can easily Solo the Guardian, just with a few pet heals. Very easy, just dive down to bottom of lake just right of the path leading up to the first boss. :-)

Solo'd this as a resto druid. Just heal and cast Wrath and Moonfire. Dont switch forms, waste of mana, i used Innervate and 1 mana pot.

has anyone else solo'd this in 2.4.2? I've made it to the key frag room (with much frustration, that hallway with the constant waves is a bit tricky, and vanish doesn't like to work if you don't resist the sentinels lightning, since he'll just lightning you again). but I can't seem to find a break in the pats that last long enough to pull the frag guardian into the hall.

Confirmed you CAN still use someone else's instance. I got an invite from people who had just finished their run, and as long as one of them is the leader, there's no problem. (soloing the arcatraz key is a PAIN.)

I soloed it but it wasn't easy. I'm shadowstep so it was easy to stealth to the hallway outside of the sentinel's room, then I had to pop rocket boots, run around the corner and cloak/vanish to avoid getting hit by the sentinel's lightning. After that, wait for the pat to move back into the middle of the room, distract him, and pull the maggots. You'll have to do one body at a time, otherwise the pat will return. Do the same distract sequence, then open the container, kill the guardian, and loot the key. The pat returned by then but I was able to vanish and hearth.

I've got mostly s4 with s2 weapons (with engineering gear) so I imagine it's nearly impossible as a fresh 70 rogue.

soloed the SV part on a mage with no pots easy
pull the 1st two mobs nova then blink cast invis get asfar as u can without pulling more mobs just run past the 1st piller on the left u wanna be huging the wall by the time invis wears out wait 5 min have ur tea have your smoke
ur next invis will give u loads of time to get to the water to the east :)

Just wanted to revise the SV fragment for anyone who wishes to attempt to stealth it.

My 70 boomkin druid managed to stealth it, but I wouldnt advise non-stealth classes to try this. Though it is possible, its almost 10x harder.
Firstly I pulled the pat at the entrance, roots one, and dps the other down with HoTs on me also. Left entrance to lose aggro. Came back in and only the patrol on the right remained making it easy for me to stealth around him to the left.

Once inside there are a couple of Boglords to the far right that see stealthed enemies so your best bet without pulling them is to navigate thru the patrols stealthed. They are tricky at first and I died once trying to get thru them, but basically your only trying to get just a little bit past them and into the water that is to the not so distant right hand side. I used the pylons for cover because the patrols dont really frequent that route.

Again, it is tricky for a balance druid to get past the patrols unless you have points in stealth (feral). For Rogues I think the equivalent is subtlety. Basically once you hit the water, your home free. In the bottom left hand corner of the lake is the box you need to activate, which will summon a lvl 70 ellite fragment guardian. very easy to solo, just watch your breath so you dont drown.

Make sure your hearth is cd otherwise you'll have to stealth back out like I had to lol.

PS: I basically made this for other bal druids who wanted to be able to try this out. Its also applicable to ppl who want to use pots but its not advised you try that. The patrols are relentless and see through stealth at great distances.

Just so you know if you are trying to get the third fragment, and you dont have a lockpicker or the key, the quest line to get the key will take 2-to 2 1/2 hours to get..... -.-
2 hour detour for me....but hey now i have the key incase the guildies need it...prob not

Soloable by a lv80 mage frost spec (~5k gs), including the instances for arcatraz key.

For third key fragment, bear in mind that the mobs in the fragment room are resistant to frost and don't seem to slow down much when you frostbolt them. Keep fireball ready!

Point 1: For the Second Fragment, head towards the first boss (Hydromancer Thespia). Just past the ramp leading to her room, there is a pool. Dive down to the bottom, and you will find the Arcane Container down there.

For the Third Fragment, head through to the First boss: Voidwalker. After this room, proceed up the ramp to the blue room with plenty of voidwalkers.

If you look hard to your right, you will see the Arcane Container in the corner, in all it's sparkly glory.

Point 2: No-one cares how you solo'd this; comments that actually help others find the object in question are far more useful.

In regards to the Arcatraz key fragment....please note,

It is NOT in the same room as the Voidwalker boss, Zereketh the Unbound.

You can pass right by this boss and go UPSTAIRS from him. There is a room above him filled with voidwalkers---THIS is the room where the fragment is located.

The First Key Fragment is in Shadow Labyrinth, at the very end of the instance, near Murmur on the left-hand side.

The Second Key Fragment is in The Steamvault, in the pool of water just to the right of Hydromancer Thespia.

The Third and final Key Fragment is in The Arcatraz. When you get to Zereketh the Unbound, go up the ramp and stop at the entrance to the next room, which is full of Negaton Screamers. In the corner to your right, is the Arcane Container.

As a Level 85 Elemental Shaman, I was easily able to solo all of this. The Second and Third fragments were easy, but the First Fragment required almost a full-clear of Shadow Labs. (Due to how some of the boss fights work.)

There's not three instances at "the Steamvaults." There's four instances at Coilfang Reservoir, yes, and the Steamvault is the one to the left of the waterfall. The easy way to remember which five-man zonein is which is to know they're in alphabetical order from left to right. Serpentshrine Cavern's entrance is the waterfall itself.

The reason nobody mentions this is because once upon a time you had to enter instances at their zonein and not just magically get whisked away when your queue started. Anyone who leveled in TBC would have known where all of those zones were without needing directions. At least, if they needed directions while getting keyed for Kara they either had a warlock slave or weren't ready for the key yet.

I wish I had a warlock slave.

Did this easily as a Level 85, fully geared Warrior - here's how I did it. I went to each instance and for the most part the MOB's ignored me, those that didn't I killed until I reached the key fragments. Doddle - and probably as much use as many of the comments on here - c'mon guys, give info that helps, not a commentary on how wonderful you are!

Pacify your pets (i.e. Hunters) or they attack and you don't get credit, and have to wait a day.

you do not need to kill any the bosses for the 2nd or third fragments.

When you defeat the bosses in The Steamvaukt, dont forget to hit the access panels or you run around a lot, like me.

Anyone else notice that the questgiver says the third fragment is in Tempest Keep, but it's actually in Arcatraz?
I looked around the keep forever...

Any level 90-100 can solo this easily, for 85's too. Though, 70's-75 will need some aid. And speaking as a level 100 paladin, it's certainly easy to solo.

The Second and Third Fragments

This quest was marked obsolete by Blizzard and cannot be obtained or completed.

Obtain the Second Key Fragment from an Arcane Container inside Coilfang Reservoir and the Third Key Fragment from an Arcane Container inside Tempest Keep. Return to Khadgar in Shattrath City after you've completed this task.

Description

I hid the second fragment at the bottom of Serpent Lake, long before it was called that. The giant drain installed there after the naga took over has likely pulled the container into the depths of Coilfang Reservoir.

The third fragment will prove the most trying, as I left it inside Tempest Keep back when it was controlled by the naaru. Kael'thas now rules it and the chamber where I left it has become a prison.

Bring me these remaining fragments, <name>. Much depends on your success.
