This is a frustrating quest but as you kill ethereals look for translucient purple/pink rods sticking out of the sand.

Picking them up will restrict flying and decrease movement speed.

You can hold multiple (I had 4 at a time) but you will drop 1 or 2 as you fight things and need to pick them back up (they don't disappear when dropped).

Killing Shadowguard Voidblade's makes the rod spawns near them. Usually 2-3 kills and rod spawn. Pick it up. You can use movement speed ability's to deliver them but you can not mount or you drop them on the floor. But, you can re pick them again.

kill them loot purple rods (weighty variable rod) on the ground run back to quest npc, u can mount but cant fly. worst quest ever indead
u need 5 rods in total and u can carry more than one in a time.

It seems like entering combat will guarantee you drop one rod near you. I would suggest picking them back up ASAP; it doesn't seem like attacking in combat drops more, just entering combat or perhaps your first attack in a new pull (I only ever entered combat by attacking things intentionally).

The reason you need to be fast about getting it back is because, as if everything else about this quest didn't already suck enough, your rods can be stolen. So don't go "help" people kill mobs and if someone comes to "help" you then get your mouse ready.

You can use stealth and movement speed abilities (at least in my case Camo and Cheetah) in order to beat a quick exit without fear of dropping your rods.

If you don't notice a rod on the ground and leave it there and forget where you left it, the quest will not spawn another one for you later.... so good luck going on a hunting mission trying to find it again. Only 5 will spawn, while you're fighting, so pay close attention when it drops to pick it up and take it back the quest giver.

Each rod is 20%, so you'll need 5x rods to complete the quest.

To drop off the rod, click on the Control Console, which can be done while Phase Diving.

This quest is horrible.

In case you forget, the turn in, after walking a mile at a snails pace, is at 47.98 , 57.33.

Each rod is 20% and that makes it you will need 5 to complete the quest.

The rods are glowing red on the ground just outside the dome and also be careful as you might drop them if you take damage.

This can be done much faster with a friend's help. They just need a flying mount that can carry passengers. You pick up the rod, hop on their mount, and they fly you straight to the quest giver.

Don't be like me and be looking at the pink or pruple scimitars and stuff they leave behind once you kill them, you're not looting their bodies. You're looking for a *vertical vaguely translucent thingy that almost looks like a mini dueling banner that pops near them but not underneath them. I must have killed 50 mobs before I noticed them. GLHF!

The rods are semi-transparent in appearance, making them easy to miss until you know what you're looking for. They're slightly limned in maroon.

If you want to see how many you're carrying then look at your buffs and find the one that says Weighty Variable Rod, which will have a number on it for however many rods you're currently carrying.

Also, you CAN use ground mounts, but you will be unable to fly.

When you get in combat then you will drop your rod(s). Note where you dropped it so that you can pick it back up after getting out of combat. Even if you are carrying multiple rods then you will only drop a single rod on the ground, and picking it back up will give you back however many you had prior to dropping it.

Someone said in another comment that you can only carry a max of 4 rods, and then you have to turn them in. I didn't confirm this myself, but I assumed that it was correct and so I made two trips to get rods and then drop them off. The first trip I got two rods, and the second trip three rods. This makes 100% and you'll then be done with the quest.

The rods can be found by the Shadowguard mobs located near /way 52.10, 51.00

Ok now i agree this quest is horrible. Probably the worst one on this xpac (NVM The Grift is by far worse).

So many completely !@#$%ic quests... were these elementary school children working for blizzard? Why wasn't any of this rooted out in the beta? This is god awful, and then you move on to yet another horrible quest. These are not fun, these are so tediously stupid.

Every week im surprised even more how %^&* quests can be. And i always think thats the limit of #$%^iness but next reset its gonna be even worse.

You can mount and carry the rods. You cannot fly.

If you've killed, what seems, 50-100 mobs and still have only seen 1-3 rods, check the entire radius of the quest in your map. I killed many mobs in one area and I had only seen 2 rods. I was frustrated so I started flying around and I found 3 whole rods in the complete opposite area than where I killed the mobs, close to the Eco-Dome. They do not drop FROM the mobs but rather the mobs are crowded around them or in their vicinity.

I just want the person who designed this quest to know that I have 7 days left on my sub (I only play WoW on and off with new patch releases these days) and I was 50/50 on my decision to resub or not, but this quest single-handedly decided for me. Whatever on earth you think this was, it was certainly NOT fun. Don't do it again.

Blizzard please remove this quest from the warrant rotation, not only are the translucent rods hard to see, sometimes they don't spawn at all if you've killed mobs and walked away and the mechanic of them "falling off" you is not fun at all. Way too time consuming for a major rep weekly.

Seriously. The quests in this Patch should be gathered and be a study case in any game design course on what to DO NOT DO .

Whoever design em and more importantly whoever approved them should be fired.

The small island at around /way 49.81, 47.25 was a really effective place for me. There was 1 rod on the ground and the mobs around it dropped rods. There was a clear shot back to the dome without any hostile mobs between. This quest still sucks but I hope this island helps other people with it.

There is no need to kill anything. Phase dive, go to the left of the dome, there is only one Rampager patroling there. Around his route you can find enough rods. Mount up and go turn in.

So when I went to the identified section to kill ethereals not one dropped (I killed a frustrating amount.) I noticed where the world quest "Endangered specimens" there were 2-3 ethereals guarding the glowing red rods. I killed them and took the rod. Yes you will have to fight things as you carry it back but i found this zone to be easier to deal with than fighting endless ethereals hoping one would drop.

Movement enhancing spells work while carrying rods. Burning Rush had me zooming around just fine :)

Rods are on the ground, see-through w/red outline, usually near 2 or 3 hostile ethereals, so do the void marking portion of the quest at the same time.

the entire Ka'resh patch is an exercise of patience and critical thinking skills, if you can call the quests that. each expansion seems to build to the worst quest writing, and we keep coming back.

I swear this is the most I've been to Wowhead to read about a quest than this patch, and each time I just want to do post the Simpson "old man shakes fist at the clouds" meme instead of write a comment.

If you are doing it solo then its really sad, but the best way to do the quest is just throw yourself off into the void after you pick up the crystal, the spirit healer is right outside the dome and you won't lose the rod when you die. It will also allow you to fly while dead while carrying the rod in some places.

The Rods are fairly rare but can spawn anywhere within the affected zones of the quest.
Fighting a mob will cause you to drop any Rods you're carrying, and there's a chance they will de-spawn once dropped.
You can use movement abilities like Blink or speed buffs without dropping your Rods.

Because carrying Rods disables flying, it’s best to collect five Rods, then use a Goblin Glider Kit from a high point to glide down into the eco-dome and walk into the small circle next to the quest giver to deliver the rods.

Instructions:
There’s a small circle in the center of the Primus Eco-Dome.
Walk around the outer area of the dome (starting on the left of the dome) to find the small red tube-like items called Weighty Variable Rods.
Plan your route so you end up with 5 Rods on a nearby hill or high spot, then glide directly into the dome using your Goblin Glider Kit.

I can only kill one dude and grab one rod and then I have to take it back to quest giver.
I have tried to take two it will not accept more than one at a time.
How did this quest get approved?
The weighty part comes in when you realize you cannot fly .
This guy got PAID to create this nonsense quest.
What does that tell you about what Blizzard is really like....

All this talking about about how much this quest is garbage..... i cant even get the Damn quest.... Om'loof doesnt offer any quests to me. ive run the script and it hasnt been completed, so what in the Actual F.... ? i cant find anything, anywhere, on the interwebz about any sort of prerequisite for this quest.... F.U. Blizz.

No, I'm sure at this point there's a Sadistic Quests Team working at Blizzard. They handpick the worst of the worst to do their best creating the most disrespectful wastes of time you've never had the misfortune of doing, then they turn them into repeatable experiences.
I believe my purgatory will 100% include this quest.

Description

A Calculation Container is no easy feat to construct. I have not made one recently, as thieves have stolen the data rods I need to complete the task. If you can recover the rods, I could create one. Be warned! The rods are quite heavy and will take some effort to return them. I have been known to drop them quite easily.
