"That thing" is up above the pool. There's ramp to the right, don't be like me just staring at the water waiting for something to spawn.

As of 11.0.2 this is currently bugged with Party Sync. As soon as you click the memory gem, the follower NPC's despawn.

If you can't find "the gem" after killing the quest mob, it falls through the hole near the mob and lands in the pool below.

after 45 minutes of trying i could complete this quest by abandoning the quest, taking it back, clicking the gem and abandoning it again and taking it back again in a really quick succession. After 5 or 6 cycles the quest was completed and the tome ported me to the next scenario.

I think this quest is bugged because of the nearby worldquest but I might be wrong.
Anyway the only way to find out is to abandon the loooooooong quest to leave chowalking, complete the worldquest and start the quest chain from scratch in dornogal.

I couldn't bother so I tried to bruteforce it

and voilà !

If you are doing the recap;

Start the quest and inspect the gem.
When the story starts to play, abandon the quest.
Retake the quest and click the gem again --> You will be able to turn it in immediately.

1. Accept the quest
2. Click the crystal
3. ! immediately abandon quest ! (mid dialogue)
4. re-take quest (fast)
5. re-click crystal (fast)
6. complete quest!

I completed the quest, but the book just does not move on to the next step in the chain.

via the comments on this entry, I was able to get the quest turned in, but got no follow up. I left the cave, logged out and back in, summoned the book, flew back to dornogal to give it another shot, all of it failed to give me a lead on to the next step. I could not find Magni to get the next step at all. Ended up abandoning the entire thing, then giving up when trying to pick it back up at the book started me back at the khaz algar arrival of dalaran.
